Description
In the poem, he apologizes for leaving Von Neumann’s party early and incurring the wrath of his wife, calling himself a “thick skinned fool” and a “clumsy bull” Einstein urges Von Neumann not to be angry, that “regret creeps at the memory”, and that he is filled with dismay This is a real rarity, and is the only poem by Einstein that we have ever carried; it has been in a private collection for a generation[embed]https://vimeo.com/1180595880?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci[/embed] John Von Neumann was a mathematician, physicist, computer scientist and engineer who in 1933 Von Neumann accepted a tenured professorship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. This was also where Albert Einstein worked, so the two were colleagues. Von Neumann had perhaps the widest coverage of any mathematician of his time, integrating pure and applied sciences and making major contributions to many fields, including mathematics, physics, economics, computing and statistics. He was a pioneer in building the mathematical framework of quantum physics and the digital computer. His analysis of the structure of self-replication preceded the discovery of the structure of DNA. During World War II, Von Neumann worked on the Manhattan Project. Before and after the war, he consulted for many organizations including the Office of Scientific Research and Development, the U.S. Army’s Ballistics Research Laboratory, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. At the 1950s, he chaired a number of Defense Department committees. He was also a member of the influential Atomic Energy Commission, in charge of all atomic energy development in the country.Von Neumann and Einstein shared a similar cultural background but had different personalities and differed in work style, sometimes creating friction. Working just a few offices down from each other, Einstein was exceptionally irked by the loud music that often emanated from Von Neumann’s office. In time, Einstein would admire Von Neumann’s intellect but be critical of both his work and style; and Von Neumann would become envious of Einstein. Colleagues considered von Neumann's mind faster and more acute, while viewing Einstein's understanding as deeper, more original, and more foundational to physical reality. In summary, while von Neumann may have had more raw, lightning-fast processing power, Einstein had a greater depth in understanding the universe.Von Neumann was socially active within the local academic community. He was a renowned, high-energy party host in Princeton, known as a ""bon vivant"" who loved socializing, loud music, and dancing. His parties were frequent, and often featured fine wine, off-color jokes, and a mix of academic and social guests. Among his guests was Albert Einstein. It is said that Von Neumann could attend parties until the early hours of the morning and then deliver a lecture at 8:30 am. Whereas Von Neumann was known for social parties, Einstein was more of an introvert who actively embraced solitude and tended to avoid displays of luxury.Autograph manuscript signed, being a poem, in German, Princeton, no date, to Von Neumann and his wife, apologizing for his bad behavior at their cocktail party. “Dear Neumanns, The following Knittel [traditional German poem of rhyming couplets known for their humorous or satirical nature] verses should help you forgive my clumsiness:“You thick skinned fool, you clumsy bullSo rang the scold in my ear so fullWhich met me once down the stairsAs I made my way to the cars.""And she was right, I swear,The lady of the gentle sex so fairThat I did neglect the NeumannsAs I took off without any plans""I now shudder thinking backAt the wild looks of the spouse’s attackRegret creeps at the memoryThat I should so forgetful be.""And I am filled with such dismaySuch a thing will never do again or sayLaugh it off but anger notMay this poem help a lot.""Yours truly, A. Einstein”This provides a fascinating window into how Einstein saw his relationship with Von Neumann, and the strain it was under, as well as on Einstein’s own behavior (calling himself a “thick skinned fool, you clumsy bull”).This is a real rarity, and is the only poem by Einstein that we have ever carried.

Description
Elmira Printing Company, 1916. BACON, Alexander S. THE MILITARY PREPAREDNESS OF A GIANT. Elmira, NY: Elmira Printing Company, 1916. 12mo., printed tan wraps; 64 pages. Third Edition. The author, a West Point graduate and attorney, pens a treatise on America's preparedness for war and the involvement of the Masons ("even house dogs sometimes go mad") in it. "At the conclusion of this war, the United States will be the only first-class military power left." "The ideal American is a Masonic American, the friend of all mankind, a Big Brother, ready to defend and help." And while this book apparently went through at least three editions, none appear in the marketplace that I can locate. Inscribed by Bacon on the front cover "Compliments of Alexander S. Bacon." Also signed on the front cover by Volney A. Smith, Esq." I have been unable to find any connection with either Bacon or Smith with the Masons. None-the-less, an unusual and scarce essay on America's involvement in World War I. Very Good (some loss top of spine (contents clean & tight). Rare! $250.00.

Description
Boston, Mass.: Joseph Burnett Co., 1890. Early (first ?) edition, n. d. (ca 1890 according to (Massachusetts) Southborough Historical Society's collection records; a similar edition classified by OCLC as ca 1900); 3 1/2 x 6; pp. 20; brown wraps illustrated and ruled in red and black; a bit of wear along spine; slight ripple to wraps and pages; illustrated; very good. An uncommon early cookbook and advertisement for Joseph Burnett Company of Boston and their famous products. In 1847 a prominent lady had walked into the office of of Joseph Burnett, then chemist. She was anxious to be able to use vanilla flavoring for her desserts and she asked him if he could help her as the only way known at the time was the messy and unsatisfactory business of cutting vanilla beans, wrapping them in linen, and dunking them like tea bags into whatever dessert mix required flavoring. Burnett took the challenge, spent months experimenting, and eventually came up with what would become the first Vanilla Extract ever sold in this US. In 1858 he would partner with William G. Edmonds and the company would become known as Joseph Burnett & Co. Their innovative spirit and ability to continuously introduce new products (Almond, Rose, Nutmeg, Peach, Celery, Cinnamon, and many more extracts) would distinguish and set them apart from the competition. The book contains various recipes for delicious desserts, including American Kisses, Chocolate Pie, homemade candies, etc. Also featured are helpful cooking and mixing hints.

[Rochester, NY]:: American Public Health Association, 1890., 1890. Small 8vo. xi, [1], 190 pp. Rear free endleaf excised. Original full mauve blind- and gilt-stamped cloth. Ownership signature of Arthur L. Frank. Very good. While Abel was living in Germany, she studied the latest European research on nutrition, and collected information about community kitchens - where basic prepared foods like soup and bread could be bought for pennies by local residents – and various consumer co-operatives. In 1888 she entered an essay contest sponsored by the American Public Health Association, a group of physicians, lawyers, teachers and others working for sanitary conditions and better hygiene. The subject was 'practical sanitary and economic cooking adapted to persons of moderate and small means,' and first prize, offered by Henry Lomb of Bausch & Lomb, was $ 500. Abel's submission, published in book form by the APHA (1890), was by far the best; the judges refused to award the second prize $ 200) to any of the others. Presenting the research into nutrition and digestion done by Dr. Atwater, Dr. Beaumont, and others, and combining it with her knowledge of community kitchens, she suggested a detailed approach on how to feed families inexpensively, and why selected foods would satisfy their nutritional needs. As the Journal of Home Economics said, at the time of Abel's death in 1938, "The movement which was later to be called home economics was making some headway, and Mrs. Abel's little volume was like a lamp in the wilderness showing the way through the darkness . . . for years an increasingly large number of teachers depended on it as a guide and its significance in the development of interest in nutrition and the preparation of food cannot be overestimated." – Anne-Marie Rachman, Michigan State University.
