Description
London: S & J Fuller, 1818. Henry Alkens' Fox Hunting Seven Magnificent Hand Colored Aquatint Plates ALKEN, Henry. A Set of Seven Plates on Fox Hunting by Henry Alken. London: S & J Fuller, 34 Rathbone Place, 1818. First edition. Oblong folio (17 1/16 x 22 1/16 inches: 433 x 560 mm.). Specially printed title-page which also includes a listing of the plates. Seven hand colored aquatint plates by Thomas Sutherland after Henry Alken in thick card mounts, each image size approximately 9 3/8 x 12 1/2 inches and each plate size approximately 13 1/8 x 16 1/2 inches. All plates window framed in 1/8 inch thick card, mounted on stubs. Plate 5 "The Death" had a couple of very small lower marginal tears (not affecting plate mark) which have been expertly repaired. Plate 6 "The Refreshment" has a few expertly repaired tears on the lower margin just touching the plate image. Otherwise a very fine set of these plates. Bound by Aquarius of London ca. 1990 in three quarter green morocco over green cloth boards, decoratively ruled in gilt. Front cover with green morocco label measuring 6 3/8 x 9 5/16 inches: 162 x 237 mm.), decoratively lettered and bordered in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt. Fine. The Plates: 1. Drawing a Cover. "Hark to old Danger" H. Alken, del. (Jany. 1, 1818) 2. Gone Away. "The pleasure of a view Holla" [no artist or engraver] (Jany. 1, 1818) 3. Full Cry "Taking the thing easy" H. Alken, del. Sutherland, sculp. (Jany. 1, 1818) 4. The Leap "Taking the lead in defiance of speed" H. Alken, del. Sutherland, sculp. (Jany. 1, 1818) 5. The Death "The reward of a bold push" H. Alken, delt. Sutherland, sculpt. (Jany. 1, 1818) 6. The Refreshment [no additional title] H. Alken, del. Sutherland, sculp. (Jany. 1, 1818) 7. The Toast "Fox Hunting" H. Alken, delt. Cooper & Sutherland, sculp. (March 16th, 1818) Siltzer (page 58) calls for nine plates, however the two additional plates that he calls for are titled "Hark to Old Danger" and "Pleasure of a View Holla". In our copy "Hark to Old Danger" appears as the additional title on the first plate "Drawing a Cover" and "The pleasure of a view Holla" appears as the additional title on the second plate "Gone Away". "Siltzer, p.58 evidently did not see this early set. He gives a description of a set by Cooper and Sutherland of nine plates but apparently he mixed up the titles with the inscriptions, unless they were re-issued in that manner." (Schwerdt). "The aquatint process was developed to give the appearance of a water-colour and was used increasingly for over fifty years for large plates of grand views or small book-illustrations and for practically any subject, but it came to be used almost exclusively as the ideal medium for the best result in sporting prints. The sharp outlines and clear colouring gave them a briskness which sport required; horses seem to gallop and jump with greater verve in aquatint, while farm-horses munch more contentedly in mezzotint. Many engravers devoted themselves to the medium and, together with draughtsmen and colourists, enjoyed a steady livelihood with employment from such flourishing publishers as Rudolph Ackermann, Thomas McLean and Mesrrs. Fores. The method of soft-ground etching successfully simulated pencil-drawing and was used extensively for instructional drawing-books, but it was Henry Alken who used it constantly over many years in his albums with their countless cameos of sporting and comic incidents. Lithographs in hand-coloured form, although cheaper to produce, did not replace aquatints in popular esteem. Later in the century, the invention of chromolithography brought a high standard to colour printing, but initially it was to costly a process for the publisher of sporting prints." (Snelgrove, p. viii). Provenance: Lot 13 at the Le Vivier Library sale, Christie's South Kensington, on 30 October 2012. Bobins IV, 1370; Schwerdt, III, p. 167; Siltzer, p.58; Snelgrove/Mellon Collection, p. 11 no. 7.

Description
Various Places. Most 1940s-1950s, various formats. Very Good. A wide-ranging collection of Toscanini material, found amongst his scores in the estate of his grandson Walfredo. The highlight is a late draft of his speech “To The People of America,” an important document in Italian-American history that was printed in Life Magazine during the Second World War. Full descriptions as follows: Typed Draft of Arturo Toscanini’s “To The People of America” with Corrections in Toscanini’s Hand. New York, September 3, 1943. A late typed draft of Arturo Toscanini’s “To The People of America,” which appeared ten days later in Life Magazine. Corrections in the hands of Walfredo and Arturo Toscanini. From the Toscanini estate. “On 13 September 1943 the editorial page of Life Magazine was occupied by an article entitled ‘To the People of America,’ and signed by Arturo Toscanini; It was the only extensive declaration he ever wrote - and it was about politics, not music… The article had originally been intended as a letter to President Roosevelt and the first drafts had been prepared for Arturo Toscanini by the Italian historians in exile Gaetano Salvemini and Giorgio La Plana, who were both teaching at Harvard University at the time. They knew that their beliefs and Arturo Toscanini’s coincided perfectly, and they wanted the letter to appear over his signature because his fame was much greater than theirs. In their letter to President Roosevelt, the exiles stated their hopes and fears for Italy’s immediate future, and they tried - as the text illustrates - to influence allied policy toward their native country.” Harvey Sachs, The Letters of Arturo Toscanini, page 389. Sachs wrote in his 1978 biography of Toscanini that Toscanini wrote the article on his own, but then found evidence to the contrary. Regardless of its hidden origins, this letter was a defining moment in Toscanini’s career in the United States. This copy, from September 3, would have been one of the final drafts. The text is nearly identical to the published version with a few small changes - “defying everything” is added in the fourth paragraph of the published version, the “…” marks are replaced by simple periods in a few instances, and “just” has been replaced by “righteous” in the published version. Strangely, the one error in AT’s hand - moving the word “either” in the sixth paragraph - did not make it into the printed version. A remarkable piece of Toscanini ephemera. Four pages, carbon paper, with text on rectos only. Excellent condition overall with some normal tanning. A few stray corrections in pencil, which an accompanying folder from the estate states are in Walfredo’s hand. A Collection of Nine Letters to Arturo Toscanini from his Colleagues. These letters were found inside various scores and sheet music in the Toscanini estate. A wonderful collection, quite effusive in nature, most containing high praise for the maestro, discussing the works of various composers and lamenting the passage of time. Contains the following items: 1) Typed Letter, Signed, from Harold Byrns to Arturo Toscanini. New York, 1942. 2) Typed Letter from Associated Music Publishers to Arturo Toscanini. New York, 1949. 3) Manuscript Letter from Max Reiter to Arturo Toscanini. San Antonio, 1948. 4) Typed Letter from Domenico Savino to Arturo Toscanini. New York, 1945. In Italian. 5) Manuscript Letter from Adolf Busch to Arturo Toscanini. S.p., s.d. 6) Manuscript Letter from Carlton Cooley to Arturo Toscanini. Stockton, New Jersey, 1956. 7) Autograph Letter from Robert Casadesus to Arturo Toscani. Princeton, 1940. 8) Autograph Letter, Signed, from Pina Carmirelli to Arturo Toscanini. Rome, 1951. In Italian. 9) Typed Letter from Foetisch Freres to Arturo Toscanini. Lausanne, 1948. scanini. Lausanne, 1948. Four Original Photographs of Arturo Toscanini in Rehearsal, March 1954 with Negatives. New York, 1954. A collection of four 9 x 7 photographs of the great Toscanini in rehearsal, with their original negatives. From the estate of Arturo Toscanini. The images show Toscanini casually dressed in a white short-sleeved shirt, conducting his orchestra. All photos are stamped “File Copy / Do Not Remove” and have holes in upper left corners from thumbtacks and have inventory numbers written in ink. The inventory numbers - which all contain the prefix “33107,” suggest that they could be for the rehearsals from his final performance on April 4. Typed Letter from Arturo Toscanini to his Orchestra, 1940. N.p., July 22, 1940. Typed letter, text on recto only. Arturo Toscanini wrote this letter to his orchestra upon the completion of a successful South American tour in 1940. He writes: “My dear friends [sic] Tomorrow our trip will be over… To-morrow we will be separated after two months we lived day by day the same life. It is very sad indeed, but that is life… We have never been so linked, all as one, as in these 16 concerts… We must be proud of what we have done… God bless you all.” The full text of the letter appears on page 374 of Harvey Sach’s The Letters of Arturo Toscanini. Some indecipherable notes on margins in an unknown hand, a few small various stains, good condition overall. Christmas Card to Arturo Toscanini from the Embassy of the USSR, 1943. Washington, 1943. Card with stamped envelope, 6 x 5 inches. A Christmas card to Arturo Toscanini from Fedor Orekhov, First Secretary and Press Representative of the USSR Embassy in Washington. Addressed to Toscanini at his Sycamore Street residence in Riverdale, New York. An interesting group, all quite well preserved in excellent condition.

Description
(Westerham, Kent): Westerham Press Limited, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Dulac, Edmund. First (and only) printing, octavo size, 66 pp., inscribed by Barbara Hutton. Barbara Woolworth Hutton (1912-1979) achieved fame - or notoriety - due to the immense wealth into which she was born, coupled with a "troubled private life" (n.b., quote from Wiki). Married seven times (one of her husbands being Cary Grant), losing her only son in a plane crash, she died at age 66 on the verge of becoming bankrupt. She became known as "the poor little rich girl" and her life has been portrayed in film several times. This slender volume of poetry tells us some of the places Hutton visited (the Taj Mahal, Thebes, etc.) and people she knew, but mostly are poems of of yearning. Inscribed by Hutton on the front free endpaper, "To dearest Mrs Hill / with all [?] of love, / Barbara" (undated). With a frontis portrait of the author by the well-known Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), the only illustrator of his day on a par with Arthur Rackham, known for his exquisite colours, oriental influence, and the versatility of his artistic endeavors. Per Hughey ("Edmund Dulac - His Book Illustrations"), "Dulac's three quarter portrait depicts her in her younger years, leaning into green pillows and attired in a purple dress, a beige jacket, and holding a white flower...His serious portraits, like this one, are remarkable likenesses of his subjects." ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full white vellum over boards, stamped in gilt on both boards with an all-over design of fleurs-de-lis centered in diamonds with a ruled border, gilt lettering on the spine, all edges gilt, inscription on the front free endpaper in black ink, the reproduction of the Dulac portrait in full colour facing the title page; octavo size (9" by 5 1/2"), pagination: [1-10] 11-66. Housed in a slipcase of sturdy cardboard covered in blue paper. ___CONDITION: Volume fine overall, with clean boards, the gilt on the covers bright but lightly rubbed, the gilt edges blindingly bright, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the author's inscription entirely free of prior owner markings; but for the light rubbing to the gilt designs on the board (the slipcase fits a bit too snugly) it is as new. The slipcase near fine to fine, sturdy, without splits or tears, no wear at the opening, with perhaps a very light smudge on one side. Overall a stunning volume. ___CITATION: Hughey, no. 104. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
New York: Hodder & Stoughton, 1915. Hardcover. Very good. Preston, Chloe. Oblong folio, [80] pp. Mary Clarissa "May" Byron (1861-1936) was a prolific author of children's books; information on Chloe Preston (1887-1969) seems a bit elusive; from various online sources we gleen that she was born in Britain in 1887, "in a gentrified English country environment". Her charming illustrations of the Peek-a-Boos have "clear simple outlines and bright colours, [and] her humorous images portray simple excursions and activities" (n.b., quotes from the web site of the Antique Print Club). Chloe Preston provided the illustrations for twelve "Peek-A-Boo" books (per Baumgarten); this title listed in Baumgarten with Frowde as the UK publisher, this volume likely the first U.S. edition. Preston follows the adventures of Jemima, Washington, Theodore and Jane as they decide to go "to town". ___DESCRIPTION: Paper-covered boards with red cloth spine, yellow lettering on the front board outlined in black, full-colour illustration below the title, both the lettering and the characters are raised (bas-relief style), gilt lettering stamped onto the spine, black-line illustrated endpapers, colour frontispiece one of sixteen full-page colour illustrations throughout printed on rectos only, title page with two black-and-white vignettes, additional black-line in-text illustrations throughout; oblong folio size (13 1/2" wide by 8 3/4" tall), [80] pp., note that page count does not include the illustrations. ___CONDITION: Overall very good, the binding showing minimal wear with a few light marks on the raised paper, the colours on the front still bright, a strong square text block with solid hinges, the interior illustrations bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some minor soiling to the boards, the corners rubbed with some loss of the paper, offsetting to the free endpapers, the front free endpaper with a vertical crease, the front pastedown shows the indentations from the front board having been debossed to create the bas-relief effect, we note a few pages with short closed tears (on some of which a prior owner affixed cello tape), and a few scattered spots of light soil throughout. Even with its faults, a very good, solid copy. ___CITATION: For the true (U.K.) first, see Baumgarten, Artist, p. 160. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy volume and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Chicago: Alex T. Loyd & Co., 1885 First Loyd edition. There is also a Henry A. Sumner & Co. edition first printed in the same year. As both publishers operated in Chicago, and both issued variant editions of numerous Lynch titles, one may presume some connection between the two. OCLC records seven copies of the present edition. . Publisher's light brown cloth. Gilt spine, with illustration from the novel below title/author (also in gilt) — moderately faded. Front cover features a decorative pattern ruled in black, in the center of which is featured the series logo for "Lynch's Detective Novels" in gilt, bright. Back board, same, but ruled in blind. . Octavo. Frontispiece + 36 illustrations. Light shelf wear to head/foot of spine, and mild fraying to exterior bottom edges of cloth. Tips somewhat bent. Some rubbing and very light speckling discoloration to front board towards spine. Decorative endpapers. A few gatherings slightly loose. Hinge cracked but sound between pp. 48 and 49. Light pencil markings to margins of first few pages. Otherwise, text is clean and relatively bright. Very light toning and almost no foxing. A very good copy. Emily "Emma" Murdoch Van Deventer (1853 – 1914) was an Illinois-born mystery author who published at least two dozen detective novels under the pseudonym "Lawrence L. Lynch (of the Secret Service)" — Lawrence Lynch being the name of her first husband. Van Deventer's oeuvre is known for exploring Chicago and its surrounding environs, and for frequent appearance of strong, female leads, including the titular girl detective in Madeline Payne, the Detective's Daughter (1884) and the raucous cast of Mountain Mystery.
