Overall very good; sampler mounted at corners; paper, spot mounted, is torn and rumpled at the margins.
Description
American(?). Framing is later than the manuscript or sampler.. Overall very good; sampler mounted at corners; paper, spot mounted, is torn and rumpled at the margins.. Oblong sampler (with hemmed, irregular, border) offering 5 lines of alphabets in differing styles and a sewn signature measuring appx. 120 x 330 mm. Accompanied by a dated manuscript poem entitled "Who is she" signed "Anonymous" and dated June 20,1827. There is an indeterminate signature (most likely not that of Ms Giles) at the base. The paper has letter seals and bears an incomplete remnant of a watermark: " ... & R" An intriguing combination for a remembrance (memorial?) to a past ("I knew her ...."). The poem recounts disappointment in unfulfilled promises. See Ring Collection Catalog.

Good; overall toning; binding is scraped and worn.. 8vo, I - [10], [1] - 188 pp.; II - xvi, [1] - 146, [4 - contents] pp. Gellert, now forgotten despite a critical edition of his works as late as 1989, was the author of a watershed novel (Leben der Schwedischen Gräfinn ...., 1747) in Germany. The author feels the epistolary format provides latitude for "direct" expression of thoughts and is one that is preferred by women and a younger audience. See Frenzel, Deutscher Dichtung for numerous entries.

Description
North Berkeley, California: Cumbernauld Co., Publishers, 1896. Sextodecimo, 338 pages. FIRST EDITION. A notable contribution toward understanding the relationship between nutrition and the gastrointestinal tract, well before advances made during and after World War I in electrogastography and in managing bacterial pathogens. Having established a reputation for the treatment of seasickness, Dr. Herman Partsch (1849-1934), a physician in San Francisco, turned next to summarizing what he had encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal distresses. "In writing this book my object has been to put on record certain facts that I have learned during the last twenty-five years on topics comprehended under the title of dyspepsia [...]" (--preface, page v). Includes observations showing the emergence of an appreciation for correlating data from other systems (heart, respiration) and gives weight to evidence from the letters and diaries of Darwin and Carlyle. A few pencil notes to margin; one pencil note to rear end papers, otherwise very good. In clean and bright publisher's gilt-stamped dark green cloth. [OCLC locates fourteen copies].

Description
New York: [Milan V. Petrovic, 155 East 38th Street, 1948. Comb-bound octavo (23 x 16 cm.), 71 pages (printed and numbered rectos only). Publisher and date of publication from table of contents. FIRST EDITION. It's hard to find the "cooking chats" in this book, as it contains nothing but recipes; no preface, no introduction, no other text at all. Occasionally, however, a second voice creeps into the recipes, "Ask Luigi to cut up a tender young chicken for frying..." The recipes are comprised of just four sections: Fish, Fowl, Meats, Miscellaneous (Minestrone, Trippa alla Luigi, Sweetbreads, Pork Ribs, etc.). Individual dishes include: Oysters alla Gourmet, Broiled Porgy with Rosemary, Chicken Balkan Style, Duck Sicilian Style, Roasted Squab, Ox-Tail Ragout, Calves Liver alla Veneziana, Osso Buco alla Luigi, etc. Luigi Trianni was a Manhattan butcher who makes an impression with an appearance in Evan Jones' important history, American Food: A Gastronomic Story (see page 155). Trianni walks Jones through the process of preparing a classic Osso Buco. In the single paragraph description, Trianni's chatty style shines through. Milan V. Petrovic was a Serbian-born artist who resided first in Cincinnati, then moved to New York. He has not provided illustrations for this work, but was the publisher. Stiff, printed card covers; red comb binding. Near fine. [OCLC locates two copies (Schlesinger Library, Michigan State)].
