London: J. Flesher, 1653. Folio (approx. 12.5" x 8.5"). Title page with engraving by Hollar of two angels around a table with book declaring the new covenant and a reference to 1 Peter 1:12. Text in two column Roman font. Prelims (14 pp.), text with annotations (1008 pp.), followed by the Indexes. Collation *^6 (-*1, first blank leaf), A-Z^6, Aa-Zz^6, Aaa-Zzz^6, Aaaa-Qqqq^6, Rrrr^8. Binding Rebound in dark brown half-calf. Spine with six blind-lined raised bands and the two labels with "Paraphrase and Annotations on the New Testament" and "Henry Hammond" lettered in gilt. Plain endpapers. Condition Title page with tape residue and "William Morgan Clerk 1796" in contemporary hand. Note Henry Hammond (1605–1660) was appointed President of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1643 and was allowed to attend Charles I as his chaplain. A prolific writer, he authored over 50 works and was influenced by Arminianism. This Paraphrase is his most famous work, reprinted in six more editions into the nineteenth century. His contributions lend credence to his reputation as the father of English biblical criticism. References H640; STC 501.
