Description
NY: Henry Holt, 1924. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 12 mo, original buckram in dustjacket, illustrated with 11 photographs, 173p. Includes, pp 31- 44, "The Return of Buck Gavin: The Tragedy of a Mountain Outlaw" by Thomas Wolfe, making it his first published appearance in book form (preceded by "The Crisis in Industry", an undergraduate pamphlet printed in 1919). "Gavin" was one of three one-act plays comprising the first dramatic program of Professor Koch's Carolina Playmakers. Two performances were given in the Chapel Hill High School auditorium, on March 14 and 15, 1919. Wolfe, who had never acted before, played the title role. Five years later Koch asked Wolfe permission to include "Gavin" in this collection. Wolfe tried to refuse, telling the editor. "I am desperately afraid to have that one-act play published. I was so young, so raw, so green...I ...wrote that play in one sitting on a rainy October afternoon when seventeen or eighteen, and I knew nothing of theater at that time." However, reluctant to hurt his old teacher's feeling he gave way. In 1933, after literary success, he forbade further productions. Fine copy in a slightly soiled and lightly chipped dj. Rubber stamp raises the printed publication price of $1.75 to $2.00 on the front panel.

Description
Paris: Editions Paul-Martial pour la Pipérazine Midy, 1935. Squarish octavo (22.5 x 16.5 cm.), 96-(4) pages. Table of contents. Illustrated throughout. FIRST EDITION. A cookbook as pharmaceutical promotion, from the great French founder of "gastrotechnie". The twenty rich recipes – any one of which may be sufficient to bring on "the drop" – are followed by a twenty-first, a dose of the medicine Pipérazine Midy which, it was claimed, would undo the effects of the meal. Very light soiling to publisher's pink paper-covered boards, printed in red and black and with an illustration of a gentleman happily dining and drinking, his foot wrapped for the pain. Near fine. In the publisher's black printed, craft-paper belly band, and rare thus. [OCLC locates eleven copies].
