Description
1933. MOTONO, S. La Legende de la Demoiselle de Lumiere. Illustrated with 15 full-page and 31 smaller engravings by Kiyoshi Hasegawa. Small Folio. Original wrappers, housed in a chitsu case. Paris: Societe du Livre d'Art,1933. An illustrated edition of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (Taketori Monogatari), probably the oldest surviving narrative tale in Japan and a story familiar to virtually all Japanese readers, dating to the 10th century. An old bamboo cutter discovers a beautiful baby girl inside a glowing stalk of bamboo and raises her with his wife as their daughter, naming her Kaguya-hime (the "Brilliantly Shining Princess"). As news of her beauty spreads, five noble suitors seek her hand, but she assigns each an impossible task and rejects them all, even refusing the emperor's suit. At last she reveals that she is a being from the Moon and must return there when celestial beings come for her on the full moon of the eighth month. When the heavenly procession arrives, even the emperor's warriors are powerless to prevent her departure, and Kaguya-hime ascends with them into the sky. Kiyoshi Hasegawa's elegant engravings reveal an Art Deco influence in their stylized forms, yet their calm atmosphere and sensitivity to nature remain distinctly Japanese, giving the illustrations a quality that feels both modern and timeless. One of an edition of 150 copies.

Description
Nashville, Tennessee: Published by Ben Harding, [1839]. 12mo (7.5" x 4.75"), illustrated self wrappers, disbound from sammelband. 33, [3] pp. Illus. CONDITION: Good, front wrapper toned; some offsetting, toning, and a few minor stains within. Volume 2, No. 2 in this celebrated series of almanacs, containing a variety of tall tales in backwoods dialect, illustrated with wood engravings. The contents include The Heroine of Kaintuck; Col. Crockett and the Bear and the Swallows; Gum Swamp Breeding; A Goose Pulling; Severe Courtship; The Way They Travel in the West, and more. The Crockett almanacs contributed much to the American tradition of the tall tale. "It was the Crockett 'Almanacks' which made Crockett a legendary figure and a part of American folk-lore" (Grolier Club, One Hundred Influential Books). This 1840 'Almanac' has an illustration on the front wrapper showing Crockett "Scared by an Owl" as it calls out "Whoo-Whoo- Whoop!" As noted by AAS, the publisher's name is fictitious. Harding is a character who appears in the almanac, and is based on Ben Hardin (1784-1852), a Whig Congressman from Kentucky. REFERENCES: American Imprints 55200; Howes C897; Drake, M.
