Description
London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1791. First thus. Near Fine. Publisher's blue paper boards with printed paper spine labels. Two volumes, quarto. xvii, [11], 668; [1], 583 pp. A large copy, untrimmed and partially unopened. From the library of Estelle Doheny, with her bookplate to upper pastedown of each volume. Some chipping and dustsoiling to boards, mostly to volume one. A very clean set overall with just a bit of foxing to first and last few leaves of each volume. A fresh, Near Fine set, a remarkable survival and rare in this original state. Housed in custom half polished calf slipcases with chemise. William Cowper's translation is considered a "conscientiously literal" rendering of the text, adopting a "Miltonian" blank verse in an attempt to capture the plain, direct tone of the Greek (Arnold, On Translating Homer).Though the translation was criticized by some as lacking the flow and ease of the original text, and for relying too much on reference to Milton, it was also regarded as "a lofty achievement in scholarship and poetry" that appropriately preserved the Homeric "nobility" and is generally preferred over Alexander Pope's 1715 translation (The Cambridge History of English Literature). Overall, Cowper presented an appealing translation that is here preserved in its rare and attractive original state - in the publisher's boards, untrimmed, and partially unopened. This copy sold for over $2,400 during the Estelle Doheny collection sale at Christie's in 1988. Estelle Doheny (1875 - 1958) was a renowned book collector who, most notably, owned a copy of the Gutenberg Bible that is now held at Keio University in Tokyo. Doheny lived in Southern California with her husband, the oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, and the Carrie Estelle Doheny Memorial Library in Camarillo is named for her. Near Fine.

Description
Dated 1/82. Mounted at several points with careful spot stitches (in what was considered an "artful" manner) within a wood framed shadow box of the period that meas. appx. 25.5 x 23 inches.. Very good.. A large white linen dinner napkin inscribed in black ink with a note and illustration of the famous "Laffer Curve" in Laffer's hand. Beside the famous diagram that illustrates Laffer's tax/revenue theorem the note reads: Bruce Baky / This is the / only curve I'll / ever throw / you / Art Laffer / 1/82. President Ronald Reagan's administration began the Republican Party's romance with new and questionable economic theories that furthered their political agenda. Notable at the time, and still, was Arthur Laffer's relatively new (the paper introducing it dates from 1974) - but potent - idea of taxation rates increasing to a point where they diminish revenue totals. As an economic advisor to President Reagan Laffer had a ready audience for his ideas and what followed in train "as only logical". The result being a tax system in America that is skewed to benefit the upper income groups in society. Mr Baky was a banker who no doubt met Laffer. Framed with a humorous political cartoon and explanation of the theory. An appealing artifact.

Description
Basel Chez Maehli-Lamy, 1843. 8vo., three-quarter green cloth over marbled boards, with the title stamped in gilt on the spine, and bookplate of Edward Cheney on front pastedown. This bilingual edition begins with a short history of the subject, followed by a series of woodcuts portraying the usual array of humankind confronting Death personified. A number of the plates bear the initials GS along with a rendering of a knife to signify the name of the wood cutter, George Scharffenberg, who first cut these images into wood in 1576. As Aldred Warthin [The Physician and the Dance of Death] points out, "Most of these [18th century editions by de Mechel] have 41 woodcuts [as does ours], 27 from Holbein, 7 from the Basel Totentanz, and 7 probably from the Totentanz in Berne...Numerous cheap reproductions of these were issued in Basel during the first half of the nineteenth century." Our edition has cuts that measure a generous 4 3/8 x 3 inches and are close copies of the originals. In over thirty years of searching, it is the very first copy of this edition we have seen. See: Warthin. p. 83-84 [illustrations], and 89. Not in Minns. A 19TH C. DANCE OF DEATH WITH WOODCUTS BY SCHARFFENBERG

A fine, clean copy with little signs of handling
Description
New York: Metropolis Books, 2004. A fine, clean copy with little signs of handling. Oblong (10.75 x 11.5 inches). 144 pages. 93 color photographs. Cloth; dust jacket. First edition, signed and dated 2006 on the half-title. "Not only is he one of the world's preeminent architecture photographers, Robert Polidori is also--as his popular book Havana proved--a master of urban portraiture. The Montreal-born photographer has made haunting studies of bombed-out buildings in Beirut, decaying New York tenements, Versailles rooms in dusty disarray, Brasilia's paean to spare '50s modernism, and, most recently, the abandoned, contaminated cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat. Taken together, they add to his ongoing project: the interpretation of the interrupted urban landscape. This new monograph combines the eye of a celebrated photographer with the distinctive voice of an artist and adventurer. Each breathtaking image--meticulously selected by the photographer from his own personal archive--is accompanied by a compelling first person account, based on interviews conducted by Martin C. Pedersen, executive editor of Metropolis magazine. Polidori tells behind-the-scene stories about the making of his photographs, takes us to war-torn Beirut and Brasilia and other world capitals, talks about what makes a building photogenic, how he shoots buildings he doesn't like, his favorite architects, and his love of mosques. A look at the world's great cities as seen through the eyes of a sharp social observer--and a great photographer" (the publisher).
