Description
London: Church Missionary House, 1878. First Edition. First printing. Quarto (28.5cm). Tan paper wrappers printed in red and green; 15,[1]pp; one page of publisher's ads at rear; 19 color lithographic plates on 10 leaves, relief map, one additional in-text wood engraving. Presentation inscription to front: "Presented to Brodie of Brodie by J. A. Grant 15 Oct 78." Slightly rubbed with minor external dustsoil, sewing perished but complete and neat, with occasional interior toning, else a well-preserved copy: Very Good. Ephemeral color plate book on East Africa, inscribed for presentation by a major explorer of the Nile. An account of the 1877 Church Missionary Society expedition to what is now Uganda, taken from the journal and drawings of a member of the expedition. In late 1876, explorer Henry Morton Stanley sent word to the UK that King Muteesa I of Buganda would be willing to receive Christian missionaries. The Church Missionary Society immediately organized a mission expedition. Eight men (including Thomas O'Neill, a young architect) set out from Zanzibar in 1877, under the leadership of Alexander Murdoch Mackay. Within two years, four of the eight men had died. O'Neill and another man were killed when they involved themselves in a dispute between King Lkonge of Ukerewe Island and an Arab traveller. Mackay alone reached Muteesa I. Though the mission expedition had not prospered, the Church Missionary Society persisted. It published this account of its progress, based on O'Neill's journals and sketches, to draw attention and raise further funds for its efforts. This copy was presented to a Scottish laird (Hugh Fife Ashley Brodie, 23rd of Brodie) by his neighbor, famed explorer James Augustus Grant (1827-1892). Grant, with John Hanning Speke, had led the 1860-63 expedition that traced the Nile River to its source at Lake Victoria, and he had met King Muteesa I personally. When he later retired to Nairn, he "became one of a small group of people influential in matters to do with Africa," and advised the Church Missionary Society on its activities (ODNB). An uncommon title. We trace five copies in the trade since the 1940s, only two of which were in the original paper wrappers. Not in Howgego, though he does discuss the Mackay expedition. HILMY II p.80.

Description
Strasbourg, France: Jean Jungmann, 1960. Archive of 5 vintage single weight press photographs from a press gala for the 1960 French film, here under the original French title. All rubber-stamped on the verso, crediting photographer Jungmann, and all but one show director Lamorisse on-stage behind a microphone with an official from the gala, with one photo featuring smiling colleagues seated at a dining table. Housed in an original Jungmann mailing envelope, addressed to Maryse Martres in manuscript ink, with a memo on Cinedis parchment from "F. Willkomm," signed by him in manuscript ink, and dated December 30, 1960, noting that the images portray Lamorisse while he visited Strasbourg for the gala. Also included is a carbon typescript letter from Martres to Lamorisse, citing the inclusion of travel tickets to Strasbourg and Marseilles, and various press events to occur. A welcome addition to the director's mostly unseen oeuvre. Little is known of Willkomm, but the memo does bear his rubber-stamp, crediting him as the Cinedis director of the Strasbourg location. Martres (Martin) was a prolific French actress since 1948, notably "Girl on the Third Floor" (1955) and "The Happy Road" (1957), and she was later involved in press relations at Cinedis, a notable film agency in operation since the Silent Film era. Kishi was born in 1932 and became a Japanese actress and writer. She married director Ciampi in 1957. Since 1996 she has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Photographer Jungmann is equally obscure, but seems to have been prolific in the 1960s, mostly for press relations. Director Lamorisse starred his own son, Pascal, as a boy who stows away on his grandfather's (Gille) hot-air balloon that is less controllable than suspected. They narrowly escape church spires, and snag clotheslines and party guests, Pascal enjoying every minute. Lemmon narrated the English version, and subsequently bought the rights to the film. Winner of an OCIC Award at the 1960 Venice Film Festival. Photos 5 x 7 inches, small white borders, Near Fine. Envelope and memo slightly larger, Very Good plus overall. Carbon typescript 8.25 x 10.5 inches, pink stock, Very Good plus.
