San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1984. Michael Graves, the well-known architect from Princeton, NJ, drew sketches specifically for this book of East and West Egg and New York. Not surprisingly, the drawings do not depict the characters of the novel, but rather the buildings and grounds, the furniture, landscaping, automobiles, telephones, fixtures and cocktail glasses which fill Fitzgerald's classic story of the Gilded Age. Also included is the gas station and the swimming pool where the characters meet their end. One of 400 copies, printed at the Arion Press on French moldmade buff paper, signed by Graves and accompanied by an original drawing by Graves inscribed to the distinguished book collector Bill Barlow. Archive of original photographs documenting the Chapei Incident, also known as the January 28 Incident, fought in Shanghai between Japanese Imperial forces and the Chinese 19th Route Army in 1932, showing combat operations, urban destruction, military infrastructure, and battlefield aftermath during one of the earliest major armed confrontations of Japanese expansion into China prior to the full-scale Sino-Japanese War. The photographs provide visual evidence of trench warfare, mechanized assault, aerial bombardment, and street fighting within Shanghai's Zhabei district, known historically in Western transliteration as Chapei. Particularly significant is the archive's emphasis on both Chinese defensive positions and Japanese offensive capabilities, preserving direct visual testimony of a conflict that foreshadowed the broader militarization of East Asia during the 1930s. Collection consists of 13 silver gelatin photographs measuring approximately 4.25 x 2.5 inches, several captioned in English and annotated en verso "CHAPEI INCIDENT 1932." The images depict multiple phases and aspects of the conflict between Japanese and Chinese forces during the fighting in Shanghai from January 28 to March 3, 1932. One photograph captioned "Japanese Artillery in action" shows helmeted Japanese artillery crews operating a wheeled field gun, while another titled "Japanese Bluejackets in action" portrays entrenched naval infantry aiming rifles from behind sandbag fortifications. In contrast, "Trenches of 19th Route Army" depicts Chinese soldiers positioned within earthen defensive works, rifles raised toward advancing forces.
