Description
In this long and substantive letter written from Hollywood to his wife, Patchen writes about an offer by composer Harry Geller (1913-2008) to compose a libretto for an opera Geller would write. Patchen shares the assurances he received about Geller with his wife. Patchen writes that working with Geller could be a "real break" for them. He fills the letter with news of his work, rain that would drive crowds from his readings, "bkstore imprints" and "Doris Duke" who hadn't seen the "letter sent to Foundation...." Scarce Guadalajara imprint that comprises the statutes of the recently founded Sociedad Patriotica de Nueva Galicia, which was intended to promote agriculture, arts, and sciences in Jalisco. Many of the remaining articles enumerate the duties of various club officers, but the last several discuss the makeup and purpose of several committees, prizes and other remunerations granted by the society, and various ceremonies specific to the club. This is a finely printed and beautifully bound biography of John Markle (1858-1953), one of the nation's most accomplished and affluent engineers and coal mining executives. His chief feat of engineering was the building of the Jeddo Tunnel in Pennsylvania, a drainage tunnel that expels mine water through five miles of solid rock. Under the influence of his friend J. P. Morgan, Markle became a prominent philanthropist, giving away more than $17 million to worthy causes through the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation. During the period from the retirement of William Matthews to the establishment of the Club Bindery, there was no better binder in America than Henry Stikeman, who exhibited "extraordinary skill . . . in design, inlaying, and tooling." (Maser Collection) Stikeman's firm did high-end publisher's bindings as "bread and butter" work, and luxurious gilt-tooled bindings for collectors..

Description
Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2006. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 6x0x9. First edition - a paperback original. An excellent copy. 2006 Trade Paperback. 277 pp. John Calvin has been the subject of numerous studies, but most have focused on one aspect of his thought or a limited selection of his writings. This study of Calvin adopts a uniquely holistic approach. Randall Zachman begins with a brief biography and considers Calvin's own understanding of his ministry as a teacher and pastor. From this perspective, he surveys Calvin's writings and their place in the work of reforming the church both through the training of clergy and the instruction of the laity. Zachman then considers Calvin as a theologian. In contrast to Martin Luther, Calvin sought to balance the verbal proclamation of the Word with an emphasis on the visible manifestation of God both in creation and in Christ. This study will be of great interest to Reformed clergy and to students of the Reformation and Calvinism.
