He wrote to Craig Schermer of Cleveland: My archivist, Mrs. Travis, has searched our Archives here, and to our surprise and disappointment the only letter we can trace from the Empress Alexandra [the last Czarina] to my mother is one written in 1884, as a schoolgirl, and one or two written to me when I was a young child. These contain nothing of interest. I have looked again at Baroness Buxhoevedens book, The Life and Tragedy of Alexandra Feodorovna, Empress of Russia and note extensive quotations from letters to my mother. Some of our family papers are still in the Hessian Grand Ducal Archives, and the name of the Archivist is Dr. ClemmI suggest you write and ask him. I presume you have read the biography of the Empress Alexandra by E.M. Almedingen, published by Hutchinson of London? The Czarina was Mountbattens aunt and he visited her in Russia when a boy. The letter has a mailing fold. The original envelope had the stamps cut off.

As the Preface recounts, the work "had its origins in the late 1940s when Aramco...was moving through a period of tremendous growth and expansion," beginning as a set of spiral-bound booklets for incoming American employees and evolving into increasingly sophisticated volumes.
