Description
[Harrisburg, 1854. Octavo sheet, folded to four pages, each page filled with Bigler's writing. "(Private)" written at the upper margin of the first page. Very Good with light foxing. Democratic Governor Bigler aligned himself with his southern colleagues on issues of Slavery, Kansas, and opposition to the nascent Free Soil and Republican Parties. In 1855, the Republican and former Whig James Pollock defeated Bigler's attempted re-election in a landslide. Bigler's Letter is an interesting expression of a Pennsylvania Doughface's dilemma when faced with a rising tide of opposition to the extension of Slavery. Bigler is elated that early efforts of his opponents appear to have met with failure. "The idea of Wilmot's Convention" has failed. "The friends of Pollock did their utmost to secure the nomination for him. Failing in this, they then attempted to prevent a nomination of any kind." In 1846 Congressman David Wilmot of Pennsylvania had proposed a bill prohibiting Slavery in the Mexican Cession. Many Northern Democrats and Whigs supported it, and the Wilmot Proviso became a rallying point for the new Republican Party, formed in 1854. Opposition to the Kansas - Nebraska Act, which became law one day after the date of Bigler's Letter, fueled the rise of anti-slavery agitation. Bigler explains rather cryptically that "If slavery can not extend, the South is to lose." However, he remarks that, rather than extend slavery north, "we intend to send it farther South," an idea that certainly resonated with southern expansionists who sought to annex Cuba and Central America as a southern empire for slavery.

Description
Medellin: Manuel Maria Viller Calderon, 1822. About very good.. [4]pp., on a bifolium. Folio. Previously folded. Light wear at edges. Four small worm holes, of which two in text and slightly affecting a few letters. Minor foxing and soiling. A decree dated September 21, 1821, and first promulgated at Rosario de Cúcuta that imposes taxes for the maintenance of the army and other specified branches of the government. The present edition is reprinted in Medellin in 1822, evidently as a reminder to citizens that the first payment is due on June 22, 1822. The entire decree consists of three preliminary paragraphs and thirty-eight numbered articles, and is a production of the first printer to work in the Antioquia province, Manuel María Viller-Calderón, who established a press in Rio Negro in 1814 and moved it to Medellin in the same year. This work is one of a small handful of items printed there in the first quarter of the 19th century. OCLC does not locate any copies, though we know of one in the National Library of Colombia.

A particularly nice example of a young lady's friendship album from Devon, England, with entries dating between 1839 and 1854. Nearly every leaf is filled with poetry musing on friendship and religion, by friends, with towns from Devon including Tiverton, Newport, and Knowstone. Ephemera pasted in the book include: a 3" by 4.5" Society of Jesus card of the ten commandments with tiny engraved text; a 3.5" by 2.5" stipple engraving of a young girl; leaves with embossed pictorial borders; lace paper butterfly scraps; two sentiments lithographed in gold on colored celluloid; an original pencil drawing of a man in a winter cap; cut scraps of hand colored lithograph illustrations; an original watercolor of an open book; and engravings excised from books. There are also two 12mo-sized valentines, including a very fine one with hidden penned messages under delicate scraps titled "May you ever possess Friendship's Offering" (one scrap lacking). New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1989. First printing. TIMELY ANALYSIS OF THE BIOLOGY OF POLITICS BY ITS EMINENT SCHOLAR--WITH SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER TO WILL CURTIS, CREATOR OF NPR'S THE NATURE OF THINGS. 15x23.5 cm hardcover, blue cloth binding, gilt title to spine, i-xvii, 298 pp, illustrations. Near fine in near fine jacket in protective mylar sleeve. BACK JACKET COVER: 'The Nature of Politics is the first solid and balanced synthesis of biology and political science, wedding these two subjects to show the future shape of an exciting new discipline. Masters's own research on the ethology of political leaders alone makes the book a valuable contribution." E.O. Wilson. LAID IN: Hand written letter inserted on Dartmouth stationary, dated April 11, to Will Curtis: "A number of people have commented to me on your kind remarks about The Nature of Politics on the air-waves. While the accidents of timing are such that, when I've heard you recently, the comments have been on other topics--including some on the ecology of kids that were directly connected with the lectures I've been giving in a course on these matters (called "Human Nature and Politics"). As always, you're extraordinarily effective in transmitting scientific information to a broad public. Personally, I'm grateful to have benefitted from your mention of my own work. Thanks, Roger Masters" ROGER DAVIS MASTERS (1933 - 2023) studied at Harvard (A.B. 1955), completed his Ph.D. (1961) at the University of Chicago, and served on the faculty at Yale (1961-67) and then Dartmouth College, with a two-year leave to serve as Cultural Attach at the American Embassy in Paris (1969-1971). The central concern of his career was how the natural world influences human behavior, and creates opportunities for political action to improve societal outcomes. Masters' investigation of how nature influences human societies led to significant contributions in the field of international relations, as well as human ethology and sociobiology. This work included pioneering laboratory experiments in political communication. Later, Masters' research on biology and human behavior led to new epidemiological evidence regarding the behavioral impacts of neurotoxins, first on the consequences of lead poisoning, and then on the links between a common method of water fluoridation to elevated blood lead and a higher prevalence of violent crime, substance abuse and learning disabilities. PROVENANCE: WILLIS LANSING CURTIS (1917-2011) moved to Vermont in the 1960s to raise Jersey cattle and run a dairy farm. Altbough a talented actor and singer, young Will Curtis was in line to run the family shoe manufacturing business-the Curtis Shoe Company-in Marlborough, Massachusetts, wben the factory was sold in 1953. Will and his wife Jane promptly moved to West Hartford, Vermont, and bought a dairy farm for $9,000. It turned out to be a natural. Will was elected to the Vermont Legislature in 1960. At about the same time, he and Jane opened the Yankee Bookshop in Woodstock. Together, they began to write books, including Times Gone By, The World of George Perkins Marsh, and Return to These Hills. From these books and a lifelong love of the environment, Will and Jane drew material for "The Nature of Things," a daily public radio commentary series with listeners across the country. And in a fitting end to this cycle of creation, the syndicated commentary series turned eventually back into books, two collections called 'The Nature of Things and The Second Nature of Things. Twenty years later, Will remains one of the most familiar and beloved voices on Vermont Public Radio.
