Description
1900. STECHER. Seed Bags and Supplies. 2 pp., index and 35 chromolithographic plates. Folio, bound in original illustrated wrappers (a small piece missing from the cover), preserved in a half green morocco box. Rochester, N.Y.: Stecher Litho Co., n.d. (#142669) A marvelous example of the work done by Stecher for various nurseries in the nineteenth century. This particular format is unusual because each sheet is comprised of 9 illustrated samples of fruit and vegetables, as opposed to the single sample per page that is normally found. The German-born Frank A. Stecher (1849-1916), first set up business in Rochester in 1871, and by 1886, "Stecher was a leader in the chromolithographic industry in Rochester. An 1888 guide to the industries of Rochester noted that the firm [Stecher Lithographic Company] employed 100 people and had machinery valued at $125,000" (Kabelac). No copies found in OCLC. Kabelac, "Nineteenth-Century Rochester Fruit and Flower Plates" in University of Rochester Library Bulletin, (1982), Vol. XXXV, pp. 93-114. See Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona Nos 63 to 66.

Description
London: Macmillan, 1901. First UK edition. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Top edge gilt. A Near Fine example retaining its brightness and shape; internally with some foxing to title page and preliminaries. Kim stands as a separate character from the other books that had made Kipling's name -- "'Not much of a story' may perhaps be the verdict of the ruthless boy reader who revels in the Jungle Book and Captains Courageous...Kim is, in fact and upon the surface, but an insignificant fragment of human history; a bit out of the biography of a little vagabond of Irish parentage, orphaned when a baby, and left to shift for himself in infinite India," wrote a contemporary reviewer for The Atlantic. That said, it is a book that more mature readers could connect with in the story of a boy growing into manhood, seeking out experiences and relationships to shape and define him. "Kim is a work of genius," that same Atlantic reviewer concludes, because it is "the most truly spiritual production, in the proper sense of the term," giving thoughtful readers "something upon every page which he desires to quote." Near Fine.

Description
[Washington DC]: The American Film Institute. Near Fine. 1982. First Edition. Stapled wraps. [a nice clean copy, minor handling wear only and a couple of small horizontal stress lines along the spine]. (B&W photographs) Nicely-done program/tribute book, largely photographic, from Capra's Life Achievement Award dinner; includes filmography. It's interesting to note that the tribute book's editor (also the co-author of the tribute itself) was Joseph McBride, who some years later published a highly critical biography of Capra. [NOTE that this is not the version of the program that was produced for sale to the public by the AFI (which had a picture of Capra on the front), but rather the program distributed at the dinner itself, with a silver-on-silver cover featuring only the AFI logo).] .
