Description
2/6/02. The Edwardian Era lasted from the Queen Victoria's death on January 22, 1901, to King Edward’s VII’s death in 1910. It has often been described as a golden sunlit afternoon -personified by its genial and self-indulgent King, with the cares of world war still not visible on the horizon. The appeal of the Edwardian Era is wide, and the subject of such tributes as Downton Abbey. Wealth was abundant and nearly income tax-free; society was no longer a small, exclusive circle confined to those of aristocratic birth, but open to more and more people; the arts (theater, opera, ballet, painting, literature, music, etc) produced genius and modern movements; travel was cheap and easy; and the technological advances were thrilling and amazing. Einstein was an Edwardian and promulgated his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905. So were the Wright Brothers, who invented the airplane in 1903. The overall image of the Edwardian age is that of an era of opulence, but it was also an era of change, where the rumble of automobiles and planes, champagne and lavish ocean liners, the frenetic syncopation of ragtime, and the pomp of the aristocracy and royalty, coexisted with civil rights and independence movements, Socialism, immigration, and technological advances .Edward was born at 10:48 in the morning on November 9, 1841 in Buckingham Palace. He was the eldest son and second child of Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was heir apparent during the long reign of his mother, Victoria, who presided over an era that now carries her name from 1837 to 1901, an extraordinary length of time. All in all, Victoria ruled during the reign of 17 American presidents. In 1860, Edward undertook the first tour of North America by a Prince of Wales. Vast crowds greeted him everywhere. He met Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Prayers for the royal family were said in Trinity Church, New York, for the first time since 1776.Document signed, June 2, 1902, King Edward VII, addressed to John Savile, Lord Savile, summoning him to the King's coronation to be held on the 26th day of that month, countersigned by the Duke of Norfolk. Savile was a large landowner, diplomat, and noted sportsman.

Description
Berkeley, California: [The Church; Printed by the]Press of Standard Publishing Company, 1903. Octavo (23.25 x 14 cm.), [iv], 171, [i] pages. Advertisements. Index. Evident first edition (but subsequent to an 1884 publication with different subtitle, author statement, and publisher). A generous church cookbook with seven hundred recipes; noteworthy among them: Squash Muffins, Celery Root and Hearts of Artichoke, Mussel Bordelaise, Clam Patties, Spanish Meat Pie, Coffee Fruit Cake, Lemon Cocoanut Cake, Cookies with Sherry, Monterey Pudding, Gooseberry Pudding, Pineapple Blanc-Mange, Strawberry Mousse. ~ Congregationalists answered the call from President Daniel Coit Gilman (1831-1908) of the University of California to build a hall and organize a fellowship of moral vision within reach of the campus community. The “local church” emphasis of Congregationalist governance had already attracted the largest Protestant presence in San Francisco. After ten years of planning, members of Berkeley First Congregational were called to new quarters by a recently cast bell, on 30 September 1884, at the corner of Durant Avenue and Dana Street. Thus the early version of The Berkeley Cook Book (subtitled A Collection of Choice and Tested Recipes) celebrated the dedication of the 1884 church, while its younger sibling of 1903 would have appeared in time to honor the building’s twentieth anniversary. ~ In another twenty years, they would move again, to a grander brick complex on Channing Way (still only a few city blocks from campus), designed by the Bay Area architect Horace Gardner Simpson. It served successive generations for ninety years, but in September 2016 was gutted by fire, and the building’s fate is undetermined as of this writing. ~ Clean and bright. Lightly wear at fore-corners and spine. Stapled, in olive wrappers, titled in brown. Very good. [OCLC locates three copies (also four copies of The Berkeley Cook Book: A Collection of Choice and Tested Recipes, by the Ladies of Berkeley [Oakland: Pacific Press, 1884]); Cook, page 27; Brown 57 (with different pagination); not in Cagle].

NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1971. First Edition. Signed presentation from well-known and controversial columnist Jack Anderson and his wife on the half-title page: “August 25, 1971. To Livvie and Jack- Dear, dear friends. Jim.” Jack Anderson [1922–2005] was an controversial American newspaper columnist, syndicated by United Features Syndicate, considered one of the fathers of modern investigative journalism. Anderson won the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his investigation on secret U.S. policy decision-making between the United States and Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Anderson feuded with FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in the 1950s, when he exposed the scope of the Mafia, a threat that Hoover had long downplayed. In 1972 Anderson was the target of an assassination plot conceived by senior White House staff. Two Nixon administration conspirators admitted under oath that they plotted to poison Anderson on orders from senior White House aide Charles Colson. White House "plumbers" G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt met with a CIA operative to discuss the possibilities, including drugging Anderson with LSD, poisoning his aspirin bottle, or staging a fatal mugging. The plot was aborted when the plotters were arrested for the Watergate break-in. Anderson’s wife was Olivia [nee Farley], aka “Livvie.” Bishop was also a well-known syndicated columnist. A terrific association copy!. 8vo., black cloth in dust jacket; 516 pages. Very Good (minor bumping upper corners of covers, else clean & bright; contents clean & tight); very minor wear (related bumps) d/j.
