Description
1883. ISHIDA Aritoshi. Kosho Gijutsu: Miyako no Sakigake. [Kyoto's Commercial and Industrial Enterprises]. 2 volumes. 350 ff., illustrated throughout with copperplate prints. 8vo, 110 x 145 mm, stab bound in publisher's original wrappers, preserved in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Ishida Gojiro, Meiji 16 [1883]. A splendid and charming piece of bookmaking, this work garnered significant attention as a comprehensive directory of Kyoto's commercial and industrial businesses during the Meiji era. Against the backdrop of Kyoto's economic resurgence following the Meiji Restoration, the numerous exquisite copperplate engravings provide a detailed portrayal of local merchants, craftsmen, and their establishments. Some wear to covers, stitching and extremities, with light water staining to margins of one of the volumes, but overall in very good condition. Extremely arre with OCLC showing copies only in the National Diet Library and Waseda.

Description
Erfurt: Jungnicol, 1748. Engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, woodcut chapter headings and initials. Contemporary paste-boards; a fine copy. Second edition, first published the prior year, of the story of a “wonderboy” which, according to the author, is derived from an honest historian honestly communicating to the public from authentic old manuscripts. Apparently the hero, Ignatius augustinus Samson (the name given to him at his baptism), was found, by chance, in a bear’s den in the Bohemian Forest. These are his adventures. Schnabel (1692-ca 1753) was a German author quite well-known for his adventure stories. His most famous work is Die Insel Felsenburg (Felsenburg Island 1731). Following the initial publication of Robinson Crusoe, a genre was suddenly created (robinsonade), led by Schnabel in Germany, of stories involving the shipwreck or other misadventure and survival of individuals or small groups, typically of Europeans, in remote locales. Die Inssel Felsenburg is about a seaman who is shipwrecked on the coast of an island, where he marries and starts a family of 300. It combines themes of the robinsonade with elements of a social utopia. Rare; OCLC locates only 2 copies of the first edition and 2 copies of this edition, all in Germany.

Description
Boston: I. Thomas and E. T. Andrews, 1791. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Engraved frontispiece of a joint abscess and surgical tools to deal with it. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked; some browning and spotting due to paper stock. Bookplate of Alfred M. Hellman, signature and stamp of Amory Gale (1800-1873), an allopathic physician from the Northeast who ultimately turned to homeopathy, with manuscript dates of 1794 and 1827. First American edition, originally published in 1778. Considered one of the classics of eighteenth-century physiology, Bell here treats inflammation, ulcers and swelling of the joints. Of particular interest is his description of cancerous ulcers with recommendation of medical treatment, including the use of “flores martiales” and other homeopathic remedies. Bell (1749-1806) was one of the most famous Edinburgh surgeons of the eighteenth century. He improved the methods of amputation and emphasized the importance of seeking some means of preventing or diminishing pain in surgical operations. Cushing, B254; Garrison & Morton, 5578 (“Important classification of ulcers”); Heirs of Hippocrates, 1078; Norman, 165; Waller, 846.

Description
Department of Public Works, City of New York, 1876. Original wraps. Very Good -. Uncommon 1876 booklet, accounting for the various wildlife in Central Park at this writing. Includes counts on mammalia, birds, and reptiles. And, in its surprising depth and variety, features a remarkable range very few would have expected -- such as, to name a few, the Common Boa, the Rattle Snake, the Black Snake, the White Pelican, the Green Turtle, the Tuberculated Iguana, the Black Stork, the King Vulture, etc. All late 19th century finds within the confines of the Park. The fragile report, complete in its original light-blue, hand-sewn wrappers, shows forgiveable chipping along the edges and soiling at the panels. Very light staining as well and several pencil notations to the front panel. All of which make this a still-presentable but Good+ to VG- copy only.

Description
[New York]: Friars Club. Very Good. 1958. First Edition. Softcover. (plastic-comb binding) [moderate handling wear, plastic comb is cracked in the middle but still holding firm, rear cover is detached and laid in at the front]. (B&W photographs, ads, cartoon drawings, etc.) Tribute book for an event that sadly never took place, having been cancelled following the untimely death (the preceding day) of its honoree, theatrical (and lately movie) producer/impresario Michael Todd, in a plane crash while flying from California to New York to attend this very event, where he was to be presented with the Friars' "Showman of the Year" award. (His then-wife, Elizabeth Taylor, was suffering from a cold and stayed behind in L.A., little suspecting that her next big role would be that of the grieving widow.) The tribute book itself is full of the usual stuff: primarily ads and Friars-related photographs (many with Abbot Emeritus Milton Berle), and with testimonials from a few of his showbiz buddies testifying to what a swell fellow Todd was. Those who contributed these single-page paeans were comedian Joe E. Lewis, Harry Delf (then Dean of the Friars Club), Abel Green (editor of Variety), and Bill Doll (Todd's longtime publicist). It's interesting (and not a little morbid) to note that the full-page ad on the inside rear cover was paid for by Eddie Fisher -- who stepped in to comfort Liz Taylor after Todd's demise, and soon became her next lover (and later husband). .
