Description
SAMUEL JOHNSON (1709-1784). Johnson was a prominent English author and lexicographer best remembered for his A Dictionary of the English Language that has been acclaimed as one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship. Two volumes. 1755. London. An oversized, two volume first edition of Johnsons A dictionary of the English language. In which the words are deduced from their originals, and illustrated in their different significations by examples from the best writers. To which are prefixed, a history of the language and an English grammar. It was printed in London in 1755 by by W. Strahan, for J. and P. Knapton; T. and T. Longman; C. Hitch and L. Hawes; A. Millar; and R. and J. Dodsley. It is still in the original boards although the front cover of the first volume is cleanly detached. The bookplate of Sir John Bridger is affixed. There is some wear and cracking to the spines and a few of the interior pages have chipping to the margins and other faults. A generally fine copy of this seminal linguistic work.

Description
8vo, full leather, morocco label on spine,, 55; [1], [2], 38, [1]; iv, 115 pp. Handsomely rebound in leather, with new endpapers. Internally a little browned but pretty clean, however one leaf is bound in backwards. George Whitefield (1714-1770) was born in Gloucester England in 1714. Although he was the son of an innkeeper, he did manage to get an education and graduated from Pembroke College at Oxford in 1736. He went on to become a very important religious leader in the 18th century, and he, not John Wesley, is believed to be the real founder of Methodism. During his career he made several trips to America, and became an important religious leader on both sides of the Atlantic. He had excellent oratory skills, and would often attract thousands at open air sermons. Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography refers to these skills, and mentions that after vowing to give Whitefield nothing because of a disagreement, ended up emptying his pockets completely after listing to Whitefield preach. His journals paint the picture of a very active man with tremendous energy, His writings include much about religion and preaching, but it does talk about some of the people he met and places he visited along the way. Despite his piety, Whitefield had his issues, and one of them was being a slave owner, which he justified in biblical terms. On the other hand, he did establish schools and the Bethesda Orphanage. He died in Newburyport, Connecticut in 1770.

Description
Troy, Ohio: Schnell, 1880. Unbound. Fine. Albumen cabinet card. Image size approximately 4" x 5.5" on a slightly larger card. A curious image of two demurely dressed and grim-faced young women holding a letter between them, while a third more masculine looking woman pours water from a watering can onto the head of one of the other women. Water appears to stream on to the head of the victim, but whether it does do so truly, or it is a photographer's effect, is unclear. Someone has written the names of the women in ink on the image at a later date, but the results are nearly invisible. With difficulty we can identify the woman with the watering can ("Mailey") and the woman on the right ("Grandma") but the written identity of the woman on the left has been subsumed within her ample bosom. What does it all mean?

Second edition, published right after the original first; olive pictorial wraps, printed and decorated in black; fading to spine cover and margins of wraps; minor rubbed spots to tips of spine; a few light creases to corners; overall in very good condition. Dmytro Dontsov (1883 - 1973) was a Ukrainian author, journalist, and a radical political thinker with great influence over the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. Born in a Cossack officer's family, Dontsov joined the Ukrainian Social-Democratic Labor Party in 1905, was arrested shortly after for being an instigator in "Socialist politics," and was forced to move to Vienna in 1909. After the Revolution, he returned home and was appointed Head of Pavlo Skoropadsky's Government's official news agency. By 1922 Dmytro had rejected the Nationalist ideas of his youth and had increasingly become immersed in radical Nationalism. In 1939, right before the takeover of Western Ukraine by the Soviets Dontsov fled his country for Bucharest, then Prague, Germany, Paris, and the United States, until he finally settled in Toronto, where he continued writing and taught Ukrainian literature at Universite de Montreal.
