Contemporary brown calf, flat spine with label lettered in gilt. Very good
Description
London: Printed For William Sams, 1823. First edition. leather_bound. Contemporary brown calf, flat spine with label lettered in gilt. Very good. [iv], 59, [1] pp. 23 x 13 cm. 24 hand coloured copperplates attributed to Thomas Rowlandson, and doggerel verse in the style of frequent collaborator William Combe. A rare colour plate book in the medieval chivalric genre. Probably inspired by the success of Walter Scott's Ivanhoe published in 1819 and the Regency craze for all things medieval Gothic. Sir Ethelbert romancing the fair Adelaide, despite the evil machinations of rival knight Gondibert. The plates depict knights in armour in combat at tournaments, sword-fighting duels, dastardly deeds, pageantry and courtly love. Not in ABBEY or TOOLEY. Spine label with loss, interior and plates clean and fresh.

Description
London: Printer, [Sarah] Burgess, 1916. Unbound. Near Fine. Souvenir broadside or napkin. Approximately 13.75" x 14". Printed in black, purple, and green on thin Japanese paper or tissue. Contemporarily mounted on salmon-colored cardstock. Light bleed through and stains from glue used in mounting, near fine. A commemoration of the death of Kitchener, the hero of many wars, but of particular importance for his extraordinary effort in building up the English military in WWI. Lists the dead on Kitchener's staff, and provides his military resume. Clumsily printed on thin material and often stored folded, souvenir napkins survive to some degree, but seldom in nice condition. We acquired a few napkins where the owner had the forethought to mount them, probably almost immediately.

Description
Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1876. FIRST EDITION. First edition. In addition to being a writer, Whittier was a collector of poetry, songs and music. This anthology includes lyrics written by a number of famous celebrity-types that were certainly not known for their artistic endeavors. These include people such as Sir Walter Raleigh, Edmuch Spenser, George Herbert, Abraham Cowley, and Sir Humphry Davy, to name just a few. Others such as Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Thomas Browne, Milton, Joseph Addison, John Gay, Wordsworth, Walter Scott, Charles Lamb, and Longfellow are included as a nod to the more literary types. The list of authors (after the contents) is quite astounding. Whittier (1807-92) grew up in a poor Quaker farming family. His first poem to be seen in print appeared in 1826 in the Newburyport Free Press, where the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison was editor. Under Garrison’s encouragement Whittier actively joined the abolitionist cause and edited newspapers in Boston and Hartford. He was associated with the Atlantic Monthly Magazine from 1857 until his death. Until the Civil War, he became increasingly involved in the abolitionist cause, serving in numerous capacities on the local, state and national levels. He was also involved in the formation of the Republican Party. BAL, 11341.
