Description
Lecce: Nella pubblica Stamperia di Vincenzo Marino, e Fratelli, 1795. 4to. 240 x 180 mm., [9 ¼ x 7 inches].  29 leaves plus 1 blank; printed on recto only on light blue paper. Illustrated with a title-page vignette.  Bound in prepared paper wrappers decorated with a dot & gold star-bursts pattern.  Excellent condition. Rare provincial imprint, printed in a simple style with Roman type, by the local press of Vincenzo Marino & Bros.  The printed text has a classroom feel, with a tidy compositional format, perfectly spaced lines and very wide margins.  The poems are bound in a single gathering of 30 leaves and printed with such bite that the printed signatures (which ascend to A15) not only emboss each leaf but have in a couple of instances punched a tiny hole in the paper stock.  This appears to have been printed in a very small number, probably for presentation. The collection of sonnets on classical themes are written by the pseudonymous author, Filippo Briganti, a poet from Gallipoli who obviously has pretentions of being a member of the local “Arcadia literati.”  The book is dedicated to Bonaventura Balsamo, de’Baroni di Specchia Normandia, presumably Bonaventura Luigi Balsamo (1766-1849). This title is not found in OCLC nor in ICCU (Italian Union Catalogue), nor more specifically in the catalogue of the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III, which does note another 1795 Marino imprint from the pen of Filippo Briganti entitled, Le quattro Stagioni. Agli amici dei letterati, e delle lettere.  There is a second printing of Briganti’s Frammenti lirici by Marino dated 1797 with a slightly new title and dedication, cited in the Biblioteca pubblica arcivescovile, Brindisi, edited by A. De Leo.  It is bound with a group of manuscripts and printed works and carries the call number Manuscritti ms-L/3. This title is also not found in the checklist of Edizioni pugliese dei secoli XVI-XVII nella Biblioteca Nazionale di Bari compiled by Maria Teresa Garuri and Maria Virno.  They do cite a copy of Briganti’s Le quattro stagioni and another title printed by Marino but Frammenti lirici is not listed.  See also Mario Cazzato & Gilberto Spagnolo I torchi, I caratteri e I fregi:  Contributo alla storia della stampa Leccese delle origini (1631) al period postunitario, which includes a brief notice of the Marino press from 1795 through the dissolution of the partnership with is brothers in 1824.  (Thanks Garrett Scott for much of this description).

Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1792. First American edition. Printed from the sixth much expanded London edition. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Minor chipping and scuffing to boards. Overall a very good copy. "Hugh Smith (1730-90), Physician to the Middlesex Hospital, wrote several 'Letters to Married Women on the Nursing and Management of Children' which were published together in 1792 in a volume which might be described as the prototype of the modern mothercraft manual. In it, as might be expected, he strongly recommends breast feeding and indeed he apologizes for the necessity of having to raise such an obvious point at all." (A History of Infant Feeding. By Ian G. Wickes). ESTC W13580. Evans 24796. Garrison and Morton. Norman Library. Sabin 82727. HBS 68888. $1,500.

Description
New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1927 Book. Very fine. Hardcover. First edition (so stated and with the correct "H-B" code). Quarto. [12], 203pp. plus 90 photographic halftone plates taken by the author; drawings by Frank E. Phares. Publisher's gilt-stamped dark blue cloth. Tiny bump to lower edge of front cover. A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket (slight wear to jacket spine ends). A lovely copy with the jacket. Quite scarce in this condition. As the best-selling author of his time, Grey's resources matched his passion for big game fishing, and he traveled the world for months at a time in pursuit of bill fish, Bluefin tuna, sharks, et al. Grey was the first person to land a fish weighing more than one thousand pounds on a rod and reel, and at one time owned fourteen deep sea angling records. Here he recounts an expedition to Nova Scotia for Bluefin, and fishes the Pacific waters around Catalina Island for albacore, marlin, and broadbill swordfish, triumphantly landing a record 582-pound broadbill on June 19, 1926..

Title page present, dated July 11, 1974, with credits for screenwriters Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins and novelist William Brashler. 155 leaves, brad bound, with last page of text numbered 153. Xerographic duplication, rectos only. Near fine. Based on the 1973 novel by William Brashler about a team of Negro league baseball players who break away from their teams in order to start their own team and hopefully break the color barrier. This film was an important one in the careers of Richard Pryor, James Earl Jones and Billy Dee Williams, and an early cinematic attempt to recapture elements of African American history on celluloid. Description
Moscow: Gazety "Pravda", 1957-58. First editions (7 issues); 10 x 13; pp. 14 including text to first and last pages; original staple-bound pictorial wraps; in good condition with wear and partial splitting along spine; spotting and small chips along edges; two of the issues with thin strips of tape to spine; internally mostly very clean; profusely illustrated. A delightful archive of arguably the most popular Soviet journal of caricature and satire. The present issues lean heavily on ridiculing capitalist countries in general and the US in particular. Furthermore, most of the cover art and the illustrations are those of Mikhail Cheremnykh - People's Artist of USSR and master of satirical allegory and The Kukryniksy - the collective name for the three caricaturists Mikhail Kupriianov, Porfirii Krylov, and Nikolai Sokolov.

Description
Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company. Very Good+. 1924. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [light handling wear, very faint soiling to covers, a bit of darkening to the spine; attractive custom bookplate and vintage bookseller's ticket on front pastedown (see notes)]. (The Theatre Guild Library) Series (frontispiece drawing, two B&W photographs) Per the title page, this is the "Theatre Guild version" of this play, as first presented in New York by the Guild in May 1924. (The production, directed by Philip Moeller, ran for 120 performances between March and September; the play also had a brief (27 performances) revival in late 1931/early 1932.) It's the story of a young man who becomes romantically smitten, and subsequently rejected, by an older woman, and was based on Vajda's own first love affair after he first came to Budapest, circa 1910. There are two prefatory pieces in this volume: "A Producer's Problem," by Moeller, and an Introduction by Burrell. The former discusses the difficulties in balancing the play's elements of comedy and tragedy; the latter is mostly a recounting of playwright Vajda's career, and includes the information (also reported in the contemporary press) that this play, written in 1915, was originally rejected for production by theatres in Vajda's native Hungary, but was successfully staged in several other European countries. (I've also seen mention of a later Hungarian production, in 1921, that included a young Bela Lugosi in the cast.) Vajda himself came to America not long after his play, and quickly established himself as a successful screenwriter, with notable credits on a number of Ernst Lubitsch's early talkies. .
