Description
His journey led him further northwest than any other English traveler had been before With the plate of the Tobacco plant Octavo. 8 ½ x 5 inches. Pp. [24], xvi, [17]-543, [1]. Complete with 2 folding maps and 5 engraved plates. Handsomly rebound in three-quarter black leather over marbled boards. Five raised bands on spine, blind embossed decoration and gilt lettering. One map hand colored. Early owner's signature at top of tile page. A fine and exceptionally clean copy with minor toning to the first two leaves. Second edition. Very scarce. This edition contains the two leaves of "Address to the Public" and the elusive, uncalled for, plate of the Tobacco plant. A classic narrative, unrivalled in the literature of early native American travel. Carver set out from Boston in 1766 to explore the territory beyond the Mississippi and to find a north-west passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. His 7,000 mile journey led him further northwest than any other English traveler had been before the Revolution. The work contains one of the earliest descriptions of what is now Minnesota and Wisconsin and the name "Oregon" appears in print here for the first time. Carver made important contributions to the mapping of the region and the knowledge of its natural history. His findings contributed to the geographical knowledge of the country and influenced Mackenzie and Lewis and Clark. Indian life and customs are described with great detail, particularly their methods of warfare. Included are short vocabularies of the Chippeway and Naudowessie languages. The folding maps include one of all of North America, and another showing, in detail, the headwaters of the Mississippi and the surrounding country, including lakes Michigan and Superior, and the land as far west as the Dakotas. [Graff: 622; Howes I: C-215; Howes II: C-218; Sabin: 11184; Streeter: 1772].

First Edition of the proceedings of the first international symposium on space medicine, summarizing research done in the United States from the end of World War II to November 1951. During this time the United States was starting to develop its space program, which had begun with the U.S.'s acquisition of German rocket technology and specialists after the defeat of the Nazis in 1945. One of the leaders of the U.S. space program was Wernher von Braun, the recipient of this copy, who had helped design the V-2 rocket in Nazi Germany; after coming to the United States, von Braun served as director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and was the chief architect of the Saturn V rocket that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon in 1969. Von Braun participated in the symposium, contributing a paper on "The return of a winged rocket vehicle from a satellite orbit to the Earth" (pp. 432-440); the paper consisted of a partial excerpt from von Braun's Das Marsprojekt (1952). Paris: Editions du Carrefour, 31 December 1929 (Colophon). First edition. Very Good. 19 cm; 252 pages, [1] leaf. Bound in original wraps, plain variation (that is, without the vignette that appears on most copies). Edition limited to 2500 copies on Alfa Mousse Navarre, this copy not numbered. INSCRIBED BY DE CHIRICO on front blank "A Monsieur Rudder, hommage de..." Published in the "Collection Bifur" series. Original glue fails to completely hold the wraps to the text block. Some very light toning at edges of preliminary leaves. De Chirico's seminal novel in its first edition, with a gift inscription from the author. The text is regarded as a monument of surrealistic prose, successfully translating the visual and emotional landscape of De Chirico's paintings into narrative form. John Ashbery calls the book "the finest work of Surrealist fiction," noting that de Chirico "invented for the occasion a new style and a new kind of novel… his language, like his painting, is invisible: a transparent but dense medium containing objects that are more real than reality.
