Description
N.p. [France]: No printer [by the artist], 1900. FIRST STATE (of two), before the addition of the artist’s signature in the plate. Hardcover. Fine. All plates in fine condition, with some glue residue on the versos at the upper corners (probably from earlier mounting), far from the images. One sheet lightly spotted. Housed in a modern custom, chemise-lined black Morocco box (41.5 x 29 cm.). A complete set of Albert Besnard’s striking suite of 26 etchings on the theme of death, printed on vellum and signed by the artist. This is one of only four copies printed on vellum. The other five sets (the edition was limited to nine impressions) were printed on paper (vélin d'Arches.) At least one of the other vellum copies has been dispersed (a single print on vellum is held, as part of a set (of the second, 1921 issue) on paper, at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.) Coppier (1920) and Delteil (1926) tell us that Besnard used the technique known as “retroussage” (using a piece of soft, fine muslin to slightly soften the effect of the printed lines) during the printing of two of the vellum copies. I have not been able to ascertain whether or not this is one of those two. “Les épreuves de ce premier état, tirées ‘à fleur de métal’ , sont d'une remarquable qualité, Elles sont toutes signées de l'artiste.”(Delteil) “The title of the series of prints, Elle, refers to Death (La Mort). The series is considered one of Albert Besnard's most significant works in printmaking and depicts the omnipresence of death among the living. In this series, Death is shown in several scenes in the disguise of the mistress of the household, of a courtesan, or of a lover. Death appears in all aspects of daily life, striking when one least expects it, on the path of a horse rider or as a couple embraces in a garden. One scene is particularly cruel, as Death stands in front of a mother with two young children on her lap, and the title of the print elucidates what is at stake: Lequel? (Which One?). In Après sa visite (After the Visit), a man and a woman hide their faces in despair. On the other hand, in L'Importune (Importunate), a doctor by a patient's bedside pushes her away. In Danger passé (Danger Passed), a horse rider continues on, unscathed. Other prints demonstrate the benevolence of Death who can bring relief. In one scene, Death brings together a couple under her cloak. “In 1900, the French banker, collector, and patron Baron Joseph Vitta (1860-1940) commissioned the series Elle from Besnard. The series was to include 50 plates, of which only 26 were editioned. (A 27th plate, titled L'homme suivant la Mort, was realized but destroyed after only two proofs were pulled). Vitta controlled the preliminary drawings, the plates, and the printed impressions, and limited the size of the edition. The first printing of the series comprised only nine proofs of each plate. A second state of the series, with the addition of Besnard's monogram, was printed in nineteen impressions in 1921. An additional set of impressions of the 1921 issue was offered to the printer of the series, Auguste Vernant. The plates were then cancelled (impressions of the cancelled plates are at the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris). “Born in Paris, Albert Besnard entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1866. He exhibited at the Salon of 1868 and won the Prix de Rome in 1874. While in Rome, he met Charlotte Dubray (1854-1931), the daughter of the sculptor Vital Dubray (1813-1892), and a sculptor herself, who benefited from the sponsorship of the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland to study sculpture in Rome. After their marriage in 1879, the couple moved to London. There, Dubray had numerous contacts and Besnard received numerous commissions as a portrait painter. He also studied printmaking with Alphonse Legros. Their four children, three sons and a daughter, became artists. Besnard was the director of the Académie de France in Rome from 1913-1921 and the director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1922 to 1932. He became the first painter to be given a state funeral in France.”(Getty) “With Elle, Besnard resurrected and modernized the ancient dance of death, adapting its imagery to current tastes while retaining the themes of the power of death and the equality of all before it. Death portrayed by Besnard (the eponymous ‘She’ of the title) is an omnipresent force that circulates among the members of modern society. Lurking in the bushes and gutters, she occasionally takes on the features of a prostitute or a lover. She is a tenacious and patient adversary, usually triumphing over her prey through trickery or duplicity. She is everywhere at once; she strikes arbitrarily and mercilessly. “Besnard's images illustrate only a few of the countless occasions when Death manifests itself. Many scenes are imbued with black humor, the effect of surprise, and macabre turns of events. Some are poignant, others terrifying. All remind us that death plays a very real and very active role in every aspect of our lives.”(Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada, www.beaux-arts.ca) Besnard himself established the order of the prints: Exigeante (D. 131); Dans la Foule (D. 132); L'Accident (D. 133); L'Obstacle (D. 134); Danger Passé (D. 135); L'Inconnue (D. 136); Importune (D. 137); L'Enigme (D. 138); Le Mystère (D. 139); Après sa Visite (D. 140); Ponctuelle (D. 141); Aux Aguets (D. 142); Le Coup de Filet (D. 143); Musicienne (D. 144); Le Vertige (D. 145); Lequel? (D. 146); La Possession (D. 147); Discrète (D. 148); Le Duel (D. 149); la Présentation (D. 150); L'Orgie (D. 151); Charitable (D. 152); Coquette (D. 153); L'Avertissement (D. 154); Elle consacre l'Amour (D. 155); Indifférente (D. 156).

Description
1852. STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin. With Twenty-seven Illustrations on Wood by George Cruikshank. London: John Cassell, 1852. Thirteen parts. Octavo, original pale yellow wrappers, bound by string; housed in a custom chemise and solander box. $8100.Second English edition (published the same year as the Boston first edition) of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s galvanizing novel of slavery, the first to feature illustrations by celebrated artist George Cruikshank, in the very fragile original thirteen issues.""The social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since"" (PMM 332). Harriet Beecher Stowe's controversial novel proved immediately successful upon its publication in book form, and publishers in England, aware of the nation's large and vocal anti-slavery contingent, quickly issued their own editions (14 English editions appeared in 1852 alone). This edition, with frontispiece, title page vignette and 27 full-page wood engravings after George Cruikshank, is frequently referred to as the first English edition; however, BAL asserts that the C.H. Clarke edition was advertised as being available in April 1852, while the first part of Cassell's edition was not available until October 1852. As noted in the Cruikshank bibliography, the edition in parts was printed ""in yellow paper printed wrappers of very poor quality, and hence difficult to get in a good state"" (Cohn, George Cruikshank: A Catalogue Raissoné, 777). See: BAL 19518, Note; Grolier English 100 91; Grolier American 100 61. Cohn 777. Fragile wrappers fresh and clean with virtually no wear. Very rare in such outstanding condition.

Description
London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. First edition. Near Fine. A handsome, Near Fine copy. Bound in publisher's full maroon morocco gilt, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. While copies of this work in the publisher's deluxe binding usually appear in a green morocco, this example is in a much scarcer maroon morocco in much the same style. Complete with the frontisportrait (in the first state) and thirty-nine plates. Minor rubbing to extremities. The usual spotting to plates, but cleaner than is usually seen. A scarce and attractive survival in the scarce publisher's maroon morocco. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed, it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer...The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention [and it] demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" (Bannerjee). A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch, the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money, it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable, Nicholas ultimately prevails, dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. Smith, Part I: 5. Near Fine.

Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is George Eliot's third novel (1861). The book follows the life of title character, Silas Marner, a poor weaver wrongly accused of stealing from his local church. He attempts to set up a new simple life in the countryside hoarding the money he makes, but fate has other things in store for him-his gold is stolen and a lost child enters his life. Eliot weaves a moving tale of familial love between Silas and young Eppie, while other characters are forced to reckon with their secrets and guilt, all with the backdrop of an industrializing England. Mary Ann Evans (1819 -1880), pen name George Eliot, was a prolific writer best known for her novels Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871-1872) and Daniel Deronda (1876), to name just a few. Not in Cortot or Wolffheim. RISM Ècrits p. 67. "In Anleitung zu der musikalischen Gelahrtheit Adlung organized a vast collection of information for both the scholar and amateur. He recorded all the sources of knowledge known to him about a variety of theoretical and practical subjects such as: the history of music, music and mathematics (including problems of tuning), the organ's history, registration, construction and building costs (material plundered from the Musica mechanica organoedi manuscript), descriptions of other musical instruments, the art of singing, thoroughbass, the chorale (including a significant description of various kinds of organ chorale preludes), the art of improvisation, the Italian tablature and the art of composition. This accumulation of factual data and the variety of Adlung's own practical observations have as yet to be fully assimilated in modern research. As the testimony of a learned musician, this work offers a dramatic example of the accomplishment of German musical scholarship in the mid-18th century." George J. Description
New York: Charles Cowles, 1971. First edition. Original wrappers, custom box. Very Good. THE GROUNDBREAKING APPEARANCE OF DIANE ARBUS'S PHOTOGRAPH'S IN ARTFORUM. By 1971, "an appreciation of [Arbus's] photography was building in the art world at large... The most gratifying acknowledgement of her as an artist came not from a museum but from a magazine. Through Henry Geldzahler, the contemporary-art curator at the Metropolitan Museum, Arbus arranged a meeting with Philip Leider. The founding editor of Artforum, an influential monthly art magazine that championed modernism, Leider regarded the sculptor and land artist Robert Smithson as the most significant artist of the day. He had never featured a photographer in his pages. He didn't believe photography mixed with painting and sculpture; he wasn't even convinced that it was an art form. But he agreed to meet Geldzahler in Arbus's apartment and look at the pictures in her portfolio. "Even though he was very aware of Arbus by reputation, he didn't know her work well. The box of ten photographs astounded him. He wanted to reproduce all of the pictures in his magazine. Arbus offered him stacks of other photographs, which he looked through as she chatted with Geldzahler. A central tenet of modernism, as formulated most forcefully by the critic Clement Greenberg, is that a painter or sculptor should respect and exploit the capacities and limitations of the form in which he works. Since a canvas is flat, for example, a painter mustn't resort to trickery that would suggest otherwise. He should emphasize the flatness. Studying Arbus's pictures, Leider concluded 'that Diane's work accomplished for photography what we demanded be accomplished, under the needs of Modernism, for all arts: it owed nothing to any other art. What it had to offer could only be provided by photography.' He committed himself to publishing her work. He ended up not being able to use all ten of the photographs, but he did take six, giving each a full page. Indeed, for one of them-the pro-war demonstrator in the straw boater-he went a step further. He placed it on the cover. To jump from never including a photographer to assigning one the most prominent place in the magazine was a huge leap. The showcase for Arbus in the May 1971 issue of Artforum marked a key moment in the recognition of photography as more than a handmaiden or stepsister of art. Fully fledged, photography had flown the nest. It was a grown-up art form, with Arbus clearly a leader" (Arthur Lubow, Diane Arbus: Portrait of a Photographer). With Arbus's "poetic and gnomic" text-five short standalone paragraphs-introducing her work (ibid.). Tragically, Arbus would commit suicide only two months later, in July 1971. "Five Photographs by Diane Arbus". IN: Artforum, May 1971, Volume IX, No. 9. Quarto (10.5x10.5 inches); custom cloth box. Light rubbing to wrapper covers; text fine. An outstanding copy of a critically important issue that has become difficult to find in collectible condition.

Providence, RI: The Providence Journal Print, 1892. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. 421 pp., with numerous illustrations. Recent wrappers. THE FIRST MURDER IN U.S. HISTORY COMMITTED THROUGH THE POSTAL SERVICE. THE SENSATIONAL TRIAL OF DR. THOMAS THATCHER GRAVES FOR THE MURDER (BY POISONING) OF JOSEPHINE A. BARNABY. DENVER, COLORADO, 1891, ILLUSTRATED WITH CURIOUS PORTRAITS. The trial lasted for six weeks, the longest murder trial in the United States up to that time. As we learn from American State Trials (vol. XIII, 1929, pp. 256 et seq.): "Mrs. Josephine A. Barnaby, a wealthy widow whose home was in Providence, R. I., had been spending the winter of 1890 at the California health resorts in company with a friend, Mrs. Edward S. Worrell, of Denver. They separated about the first of April, 1891, it being understood that they were to meet in Denver, where Mrs. Worrell was visiting her son. Mrs. Barnaby arrived in Denver April 9th, and joined her friend, who informed her that a package had arrived by mail addressed to her and was waiting for her at the office of her son. The next morning Mrs. Barnaby went to the office to get the package, accompanied by Mrs. Worrell. It was opened there and proved to be a box with a sliding wooden top, with no mark upon it except a Liebig's extract label. Inside was a bottle wrapped in white paper with a piece of paper pasted on the side and written thereon were these words: "Wish you a happy New Year. Please accept this fine old Whiskey from your friends in the woods." "Mrs. Barnaby, when she read the inscription, said: "It must be from Bennett." The box the next day was carried to the Worrell residence and taken by Mrs. Barnaby to her room. Two days later the two ladies, after returning somewhat fatigued from a long drive in the country, indulged in a "toddy," which Mrs. Barnaby prepared from the alleged whiskey in the bottle from the woods. They both noticed its bitter taste and in a few minutes were seized with pains, nausea and intense thirst. Physicians were summoned but, after lingering nearly unconscious for a week, Mrs. Barnaby died. In her conscious moments she declared that she had been poisoned and was positive that her friends, the Bennetts, had not sent it and once she exclaimed: "I wonder if it can be possible that Dr. Graves could do such a thing." "On May 18, 1891, a grand jury returned an indictment charging Dr. Thomas Thatcher Graves with the murder of Mrs. Barnaby. The trial began on November 24th and lasted four weeks. The facts just outlined and many others were proved by witnesses. Medical men declared the contents of the bottle to be a preparation of arsenic of a most deadly character and one not to be purchased ordinarily at a drug store but requiring preparation by a person acquainted with toxocology and chemistry. Experts also gave their opinion that the address on the package and the New Year's greeting on the bottle were in the handwriting of the accused. The jury, after a short consultation, brought in a verdict of guilty and he was sentenced to be hanged. "The Supreme Court reversed the conviction and ordered a new trial on account of an incorrect instruction of the trial judge, but before it could take place, Dr. Graves defeated his prosecutors by committing suicide [possibly by poisoning] in his cell in the Denver jail." Scarce in commerce: no copy is listed in Rare Book Hub, which currently has over 10 million records in the Rare Book Transaction Database. Ours is the only copy currently on the market. Description
(CIVIL WAR IN VIRGINIA). ALS. 1 pg. 8 x 10. August 31, 1864. Richmond, Virginia. An autograph letter signed RW Burke to Col Kenton Harper: I learn from the authorities that there are at least forty thousand detached men in Virginia who will legitimately belong to the reserve force and in addition to these there are many below the age who would be willing to unite with it provided it is properly officered. For this reason Gen Kemper has in his appointments endeavored to select at Colonels gentlemen who possess large sectional influence, as well as Tried military capacity I do not flatter you when I say that your acceptance of the Colonelcy of the August regiment would give great satisfaction not only to your fellow citizens of the Valley but to your many friends here -. In the event you acceptmy brother Capt Thomas J Burke can secure the Lieut Colonelcy, and he is perfectly willing to relieve you of the trouble of organizing the regiment Hoping that this will receive yourconsideration. This letter reveals how military matters during the Civil War often worked in tandem with self-serving advancement. By August of 1864, the Shenandoah Valley, the breadbasket of the Confederacy, was under mortal threat from Union General Philip Sheridan. Though the Confederate forces under General Jubal Early, under whom Kenton Harper served, had once been able to hold their own, by the end of the summer they were collapsing under Sheridans constant and successful military actions and his total war tactics similar to Sheridans concurrent March to the Sea. To increase Earlys army, Robert W. Burke discusses an effort by General James Kemper, leader of the Virginia Reserves, to send a force to unite with Earlys. Burke proposes that Harper lead such a force and that Burkes brother, Captain Thomas J. Burke be his second. Such a promotion would have been laughable given Captain Burke had been listed as Wounded leg, permanently disabled after the 1862 Battle of Gaines Mill. In the end, nothing seems to have come from Burkes proposal as Harper led no such force, the Valley was lost for the Confederacy after Octobers Battle of Cedar Creek, and Thomas Burke left active duty that December. The letter is in excellent condition with some folds.

The first members of the family of Whom we have knowledge were two brothers, Bartholomeus and Reinhard Voskens, natives of Rotterdam, who on May 21, 1641, formed a partnership "to produce punches, matrices and the equipment essential to a typefoundry, which they proposed to establish.'". McMurtrie, The Inland Printer, October 1924, p. 59. This volume is dedicated to the participants at the 28th Annual General Meeting of the Association of German Type Foundries and in particular Benjamin Krebs. Gustav Mori was born at Frankfurt am Main; he was a German type designer who was the head of head of the department at the type foundry Stempel from 1908 until his retirement. As a collector, he owned more than 200 original typeface samples from various German type foundries from the 15th to the 20th century. Mori's collection of title pages, printer's devices, initials and specialist literature was donated to a museum he founded in 1940, but most of it was destroyed during World War II. The remainder was given to the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz. Mori was awarded the Goethe Plaque by the City of Frankfurt in 1947. Worldcat shows 13 library holdings.
