Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co, 1909. Hardcover. Good. Ten volumes; eight with the illustrated boards, two with the striped boards. Generally with discoloration to boards, minor chips to corners of boards, spines repaired. V1N1: small chip to top corners of boards, all 4 plates; V1N2: 1 plate (all). V1N3: chip to top corner of rear board, all 8 plates present, Greek Cross of the Zodiac faces p. 74 instead of p. 70. V1N4: all 5 plates present. V1N5: not rebacked, 1 plate (all). V1N6: not rebacked, upper spine repaired, no plates as issued. V1N7: All 19 plates incl 2 color & 1 folding. V1N8: striped covers (state C), printed endpapers with some chipping, inserted half-leaf “This order in now way conflicts with…†between iv-v, another inserted half-leaf “Note our new address†before half-title page, all 3 plates. V1N9: striped covers (state C), no plates as issued. V1N10: not rebacked, binding loosening in middle of volume, all 2 plates. ****** Edited (and largely written) by Aleister Crowley, this journal is one of the main works of 20th century occultism. Description
France, 1918. Gelatin silver print measuring 5 ½ x 3 ½ inches. Printed on French carte postale paper. Fine condition. A photograph taken in France of four sergeants in the Co. B 340th Service Battalion. Three of the subjects are identified: Sgt. Eugene Brown of Youngstown, Ohio; Sgt. George Guthrie of Wichita, Kansas; and Bruce V. Brown of Springfield, Ohio. The photograph is printed on French postcard stock. The group is wearing overcoats and appear in front of an old building. Overall a compelling image that should be of interest to scholars of African-American military contributions in France during the conflict.
