Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1940 First edition, first printing, in the first state dust jacket lacking photographer's credit to rear panel. Publisher's beige cloth, stamped to front board in black with author's facsimile signature, stamped in red and black to spine; in the original black, red, white, and blue dust jacket with a photograph of the author taken by Lloyd Arnold to rear panel. Very good or better, with light toning to spine, light rubbing to red spine labels, some offsetting to endpapers, a couple of light spots of dampstaining to right of front free endpaper, and very light dampstaining to bottom edge of text block and bottom corners of most pages; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light rubbing to panels, light wear to spine ends, light edgewear including a couple of small closed tears to top edge of rear panel and one to bottom edge of front panel, tiny chip to bottom edge of front panel, light black mark to author's face on rear panel, and light dampstaining to top portions of jacket flaps and rear panel (visible all the way around the top portion of jacket on verso). Overall, a handsome example of one of Hemingway's masterpieces. Hanneman A18a. For Whom the Bell Tolls is Hemingway's account of the Spanish Civil War, based on his experiences living as a journalist in Spain during the conflict. It tells the story of protagonist Robert Johnson, an American fighting for the Republicans during the war. Notably, For Whom the Bell Tolls describes the struggle of the Spanish people without glorifying the war effort. Along with The Sun Also Rises, The Old Man and the Sea, and A Farewell to Arms, this text is considered one of the author's best novels. Indeed, in his 1940 New York Times review, Ralph Thompson praises it as "the most moving document to date on the Spanish Civil War," "the first major novel of the Second World War," and even Hemingway's "finest novel." At 211,000 words, For Whom the Bell Tolls is also Hemingway's longest text.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
London: Macmillan, 1960 First edition, first printing. Publisher's blue boards with titles in gilt to spine; dust jacket with front panel nightlife illustration by Victor Reinganum. Near fine copy with light toning to board edges and spine, a slight lean to spine, previous owner's signature on front free endpaper, and notes in pencil to rear free endpaper; very good unclipped dust jacket with light wear to extremities, light toning to spine, a few tiny closed tears to head of spine and rear inner flap, and small nicks to top corners of front and rear panels. Overall, an attractive copy. In The Ballad of Peckham Rye, Dougal Douglas, a Scottish migrant who may or may not be the devil himself, takes up residence in Peckham and is hired by a textile company to conduct "human research" into the lives of the area's citizens. His meddling into their affairs creates mayhem throughout the neighborhood, culminating in a groom saying "No" at the altar. The Ballad of Peckham Rye was written by the Scottish writer Muriel Spark, perhaps most famous for her novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which was published just a year after this one. Publisher's Weekly wrote, "Touched with a Satanic glamour, witty and quite perfect in its construction, this light and mock-folkloric novel is the work of an inspired satirist." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania: Red Tower Books / Entangled Publishing, LLC, 2025. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 6x1x9. First printing of deluxe second edition with decorated edges. Brand new from publisher. 2025 Hard Cover. 623 pp. Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College―Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet's already wondering how she'll get through. It's not just that it's grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it's designed to stretch the riders' capacity for pain beyond endurance. It's the new vice commandant, who's made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is - unless she betrays the man she loves. Although Violet's body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else's, she still has her wits―and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules. But a determination to survive won't be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College―and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

Description
Newbury Park: Sage Publications, 1987. Paperback. Good +. Paperback. 8 1/2" X 5 1/4". 206pp. Mild shelf wear to pictorial paper wraps with light rubbing and creasing to covers, corners, and edges. Previous owner's stamp to half-title page. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: To what extent are the ideas of Marx and Weber incompatible and contradictory? Is there no interplay between the theoretical systems of these acknowledged masters of social theory? The arguments which have raged for almost a century between Marxists and Weberians have stressed the opposition of their ideas at the expense of the convergence. This volume changes the emphasis: the contributors, drawn from both Marxist and Weberian schools of thought, explore areas of conceptual overlap. They consider important similarities in notions of contradiction, revolution, the role of culture, the class-state relationship, and the self.(Publisher).
