Description
Matanzas, 1967. Very good.. 120 separate original documents, totaling [145]pp., mostly typed but with the earlier documents in manuscript, sewn together along left margin, remnants of wrappers along threads. Minor occasional foxing, varying levels of toning, a few documents chipped or worn along edges. Rare compilation of original documents relating to the formation of an interesting Chinese Society in Cuba, the Casino Chung Wah, comprised of over a hundred manuscript documents, typed documents, letters, partially-printed forms completed in manuscript and so forth, totaling almost 150 pages of documentation of the society's operations over the course of about seventy years. Many of the documents were executed on Chung Wah letterhead. The Chung Wah Casino was not only a recreational gambling casino with different games, but also a Chinese Society dedicated to mutual aid. The casino was meant to be exclusive for the Chinese and to allow them special privileges. In 1925 the Chung Wah Casino was rebuilt as a majestic ornate building. Incidentally, there was a smaller association founded in 1880 based in Sagua La Grande that had the same name, Chung Wah Casino. The smaller Chung Wah Casino was merged with the larger Chung Wah Casino when it was created. Included in the present collection of documents are articles listing the regulations of the society under its original name of the Gim Sin Sia (later renamed the Chung Wah Society), which lays out the duties of the President, Vice-President etc., clearly outlined, demonstrating how a Chinese Society was formed in Cuba in the late-19th century. Other documents present here cover the society's real estate matters, finances, internal officer elections and other political matters, and much more. It is interesting to note that many of the names of the officers and officials mentioned in these documents exhibit the coming together of Chinese and Spanish cultures, such as Rafael Luis Chonming, Jose Chang, Eduardo Chau, Pedro Chen, and so forth. Chinese societies in Cuba were meant to emulate those in China. Foundational documents for a Chinese Society in a foreign country, such as Cuba, are of great significance, and the wealth of documents here memorializing the operations of the Chung Wah over seven decades add great historical value for studying the Chinese experience in Cuba. Also, Chinese societies can often be viewed as part of the state itself -- in organizational terms the Chinese state (China) is comprised of a number of Chinese Societies linked by different social structures; Chinese colonies such as the one in Cuba create a Chinese state within Cuba through the formation of Chinese societies. In addition, though casino gambling has been officially illegal in China since the Communist takeover in 1949, the people of China have become passionate casino patrons in the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, where gambling is enormously popular. The present collection of documents represents an interesting legacy of the Chinese experience in Cuba, which began with a flood of agrarian workers shipped to the island colony as indentured servants (practically slaves), and who later developed a vital community in the country in the ensuing decades.

Description
Scotland, 1860. Quarter Morocco. Wooden boards, with Silver Borders, Silver Clasp. Very Good. N.d., mid-19th Century, with many images clearly from the 1860s and 70s, based on the dress. 4to. 31by 25.5 cm. With 23 leaves, each with eight slots for photos, four on each side. The album at present has 160 items, mostly photos, in these slots. The photos are mostly portraits of family members, we presume, with a few images of famous Scots such as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. For us, the most important part of the album is its binding, which is both very unusual -- we had never seen a photo album thus -- and very beautiful, evoking the Medieval, but also being different than any Medieval binding we've ever encountered. The silver also is marked on the clasp. The relief on the front has both a winsome naivete and a complexity. Figurative elements include a regal dog, probably a hound, in profile, in front a a lyre and a tree. In front of the dog is a narrow tower. Above, centered, is a crown. Do all these pieces cohere in some way, we can't say. Everywhere else on the board are carved leaves and tendrils of clover. The rear board, instead of relief, which would be vulnerable on the side upon which the album would be expected to rest, the decoration is a simpler escutcheon surrounded by a more abstract floral pattern.

Description
Near Fine. An "Association Copy" of Clothing, this is, once having belonged to the noted American novelist, photographer and chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance. While we have not commissioned a DNA analysis of the hankie to confirm that what was represented to us by the last owner as to the Van Vechten connection, nor have we gone through the scoured all the photos publicly available to see whether this particular handkerchief or pocket square was somehow visible in one of them, we trust our source, the prior owner, because of Van Vechten's stitched nickname on the cloth -- not that Carlo is an exotic name in the lexicon of names -- but more importantly, it is absolutely period correct and with a styling that is manifestly evident in the countless photos of Van Vechten who was a snappy dresser, a Beau Brummel in you will, of the times. One can easily imagine his pulling this out as he watched a midnight performance of a jazz band at Nick's Jazz Pub in Harlem, say. The pocket square is 45 cm on each side, and indeed, it is a pocket square in many more ways than name, for its geometric design scheme is built on the theme and or repeat of squares, which can be conceived in innumerable ways -- from the small white squares, 25 in all, that dot the center, to squares formed by perceiving these small squares as the corners of larger squares, to the squares formed by outermost of these to the pocket square "piped" edge, within which are white stitched lines, etc. But perhaps we are going on at too great length about the design which is best appreciated by looking at photos of the piece.

Description
1925. Woodson, Carter Godwin. Negro Orators and Their Orations (1925) establishes a documentary record of African American political speech from the late eighteenth century through the early twentieth century and consolidates a lineage of Black intellectual and rhetorical production at a time when such material was systematically excluded from mainstream historical narratives. Compiled by Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, the volume assembles speeches by abolitionists, legislators, clergy, and educators to document the development of African American political thought across slavery, Reconstruction, and the Jim Crow era. The work supports research into African American history, oratory, political philosophy, and institutional efforts to preserve Black historical memory in the early twentieth century. Woodson, Carter Godwin. Negro Orators and Their Orations. Washington, D.C.: The Associated Publishers, Inc., 1925. First edition. Gift inscription to front flyleaf reading, "For Fearless - I thought you might like to use Dr. Woodson's book as your own, personal political manual." Single volume, 711 pages. The anthology includes speeches by Frederick Douglass, James McCune Smith, Booker T. Washington, William Whipper, Charles Lenox Remond, A. J. Ransier, Joseph C. Price, and others. Notable selections include Samuel R. Ward's 1850 address on the Fugitive Slave Bill and Douglass's 1852 speech "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" The volume also preserves speeches delivered by Black members of Congress during Reconstruction, including Hiram Revels, Robert B. Elliott, and Blanche K. Bruce, alongside later addresses by Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, Archibald Grimké, and James Weldon Johnson. Original dark green cloth with gilt stamping to spine and front board. The anthology is organized to trace shifts in African American rhetorical strategy from antislavery advocacy through Reconstruction political participation and into early twentieth century debates over citizenship, democracy, and racial justice. By bringing together speeches delivered across multiple historical periods, Woodson establishes continuity in Black political argument and documents the intellectual foundations of later civil rights movements. The inclusion of Reconstruction congressional speeches provides direct evidence of Black legislative engagement during a period of expanded political participation, while later sections address the constraints imposed by Jim Crow segregation. Moderate rubbing to spine ends and corners with binding sound and text block intact; overall very good condition. This volume provides a substantial primary source compilation of African American oratory and a foundational reference for the study of Black political thought in the United States.

Description
Idaho, 1950. Soft cover. Very Good. Blue paper covers with silver stenciled candle to front cover, mimeographed pages, 9" x 6", 20 single-sided pages. Special thanks to Chris Boyd of Boyd's Used and Rare Books for triangulating contributor names to identify Moscow, Idaho as the likely origin of this cookbook. Wear to yapped wraps, else very good. The most interesting contribution is for Nesselrode Pie. This pie was created in 1945 by New York baker Hortense Spier. The original recipe included pecans, but as others copied the recipe it (d)evolved into having chocolate flakes and maraschino cherries instead. The New York Times claimed in a 1988 article that, "while for years it was a popular American Christmas dessert, Nesselrode pie left our collective culinary consciousness about 30 years ago and has hardly been heard from since." (Dec. 7, 1988, Section C, Page 20.) The recipe included in this cookbook does indeed have chocolate flakes, meaning this was probably published in the late 1940s or 1950s.

Hollywood/NY/London/Toronto: Samuel French. Near Fine. 1990 (c.1982). 1st printing thus. Softcover. [slight bumping to bottom right corner, with resulting minor bending at lower corners of the first half of the book, plus a short diagonal crease at the bottom corner of the front cover; otherwise nice and clean and virtually as new]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) Deeply-researched, erudite, and heartfelt "making of" essays about fifteen great American films -- not necessarily "the best," as the author admits, but just a selection of "the audience's most cherished American sound feature films released between late 1931 and 1952" -- and, he's not shy about admitting, his own personal favorites as well. Rudy Behlmer was one of our great film historians, and his introduction tells us why: in addition to going into some detail about his own methods of research and writing, he puts forth a comprehensive and impassioned account about the importance of seeking out primary documentation -- in repositories both private (the studios themselves) and public (various libraries and archives). And although much of his reputation rests on his brilliant compilation and editing of such documents -- most notably for his books "Memo from David O. Selznick" (1982) and "Inside Warner Bros. (1935-1951)" (1985) -- he unabashedly confesses that it was the research and writing of this book that brought him "an extra quota of gratification." And talk about a great lineup of movies! Here are the inside stories of the making of: THE MALTESE FALCON; SINGIN' IN THE RAIN; SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS; STAGECOACH; A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE; TARZAN AND HIS MATE; THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD; THE AFRICAN QUEEN; ALL ABOUT EVE; CASABLANCA; FRANKENSTEIN; THE GRAPES OF WRATH; GUNGA DIN; HIGH NOON; LAURA; and LOST HORIZON. Plunge in, and enjoy! (Originally published under the title "America's Greatest Movies: Behind the Scenes.") (xx) .
