About Fine
Description
London: C. Arthur Pearson Limited, 1897. First edition. About Fine. Original red publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to spine and front board; black illustration to front board. The front inner hinge has been repaired, but otherwise the copy is in exceptional condition. A book that is often plagued with condition issues from faded cloth to brittle paper. This is a superior copy: bright, clean and unfaded, about Fine. H.G. Wells connects science with philosophy in this novel, which reimagines and modernizes Plato's tale of the Ring of Gyges. According to Plato, the power of invisibility could corrupt anyone possessing it, giving them the upper hand over friends and enemies alike. Wells' lead character Griffin, a scientist, succeeds in doing just this. "Griffin gives in to many of the same temptations. He robs. He injures. He kills...But even though Griffin is guilty of his share of crimes, his goal is not to indulge in hedonism. His goal is just the opposite: he wants to stop being invisible" (Frederick). Ultimately, the practical problems of being an invisible human work counter to Griffin's interests. The need to be clothed, the isolation from other humans lead to Griffin's downfall and death at the hands of a terrified mob. Indeed, much as his actions dehumanize Griffin, his invisibility allows the mob attacking him to treat him as less than human. An exceptionally important consideration of the benefits and dangers of science, and the definition of humanness at the turn of the century. About Fine.

Description
HARRY TRUMAN (1884-1974). Truman served as the 33rd President. TDS. 1 pg. 8 x 10 N.d. White House. A typed document signed Harry S Truman as President: CITATION FOR LEGION OF MERIT Degree of Legionnaire Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Stapanovitch Sergeeff, 20th Budapest Guard Infantry Corps, Red Army, displayed exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services contributing materially to the success of combined operations in Europe. The Legion of Merit is a military award of the United States Armed Forces for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. The award can be issued to members of the eight uniformed branches of the United States Armed Forces, but also to military and political figures of foreign governments. It is seventh in order of precedence of all U.S. military awards. Notable recipients of the Legion of Merit include Joe Louis, Colin Powell, King George VI, Chiang Kai-shek, Charles De Gaulle, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, and Narendra Modi. Given how quickly U.S.-Soviet relations deteriorated after World War II, it is likely this specific citation was awarded in the early years of the presidency of Harry Truman. The document is in fine condition.
