Description
London: Jarrold and Sons, [1877] Illustrated with a frontispiece by C. Hewitt. First edition, with 8 pages of ads to rear; in Carter's "C" binding, with small horse head medallion on front board facing left (Note: It can only be said with absolute certainty that A and B bindings are first editions, as the C binding was also used for the fifth edition in 1878, but, because the fifth edition is indistinguishable from the C binding, and because A and B bindings are exceedingly scarce, binding C is generally recognized as the first trade issue of the first edition). Publisher's green cloth, elaborately decorated in gilt and black, with horse head medallion in gilt to front board, and brown coated endpapers. Near fine, with light rubbing to spine ends, joints, and corners, light dimming to gilt, gentle lean to spine, contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper, and some scattered spotting to text block edges and pages. Overall, an exquisite copy. Housed in a green custom three-quarter morocco clamshell box. Carter, pp. 37-38. Black Beauty is a memoir told from the perspective of a high-bred horse (the title page humorously states that the book is "Translated from the original equine"). Born into an easy life on an English farm, Black Beauty is sold to a series of different owners, some abusive, like cab driver Nicholas Skinner, and others kind, like Farmer Thoroughgood. Because of the book's innovative animal narration, 19th century readers were able to deeply sympathize with Black Beauty, and as a result the book was a major catalyst for the animal welfare movement, even leading to the cruel practice of "bearing rein" to fall out of use in England.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Hewitt, C..

Description
Springfield, KY, 1931. Single folded sheet, creases where previously folded, three small tears at folds. ROBERTS, Elizabeth, (1881-1941) American novelist and poet, to FIELD, Rachel (1894-1942), the American novelist and poet perhaps best known for Hitty, her first hundred years, which won the Newberry Medal in 1930. A most important and informative letter in which she metnions friends Julia Peterkin, a Pulitzer prize winning writer and Doris Ulmann, the celebrated photographer (Roll, Jordan, Roll, written by Peterkin and photographed by Ulmann, was hailed as one of the first books to depict African Americans as people rather than stereotypes). -ALS, with envelope and newspaper article. To Rachel Field. Springfield, Ky. -“My dear Rachel Field, I had a delightful note from you a long time ago. It was not forgotten in all this while ... When you wrote, you were staying in a most enchanting place, where one took a lantern and made his own way and his own light if he went forth at night. And somebody was reading aloud “The Great Meadow.” I had your two books, “Points East”, and “The Pointed People.” The first I found quite of New England - some concentric essence that is continually in contact with a far-flung world, and continually withdrawn from it. The pictures in the little book are delightful. Some time I’d like to ask you to picture a book for me. Many thanks for both books and for the good note that came with them. I hear by the papers that Doris (Ullmann), has gone to South Carolina with Mrs.(Julia) Peterkin. I know of Doris’s accident from letters from her while she was in the hospital. I am glad that she is able to get away for a time ... With my continual good will, Elizabeth Roberts.”.

Beaumont (1785-1853), a United States Army surgeon, was the first to study the digestion and actions of the stomach in a living person. The patient received a near mortal gunshot wound to his abdomen and chest. He recuperated over a period of many months, sustaining a permanent fistula in the stomach wall through which Beaumont was able to undertake his study of the process of digestion. Beaumont began his observations in 1825 and they continued over the next eight years in which time his patient fully recovered. G&M, 989; Horblit, 10.

1767. Paris: Boudet, Desaint et Avignon, Merande, 1767-1773. 17 vols, 4to, 33 engraved plates (some folding), 6 letterpress tables (some folding). Contemporary/original mottled calf, spines gilt and gilt-lettered. A bit dry and worn but quite sound. ß A lovely quarto edition of the Bible in Latin and French, also issued in 8vo -- this is much the more preferable version. The plates and maps are outstanding and the physical feat of printing all seventeen volumes in six years is astonishing. Complete sets in commerce are surprisingly scarce though widely held by institutions. Brunet I, 888: Ce livre, connu sous le nom de Bible de Vence, mais qui devrait plutÙt porter celui de Rondet, son Èditeur, est fort estimÈ. Not in Darlow and Moule under Latin or French.

Newport, England: The Ceramic Book Company, 1968. First edition, inscribed association copy. Leather Bound. Very Good +. SIGNED by W. D. John and inscribed by Leslie Joseph. 97 pages of text. Quarto [31 cm] Elegantly bound by Brian Frost and Company (Bath, England) in brown leather with raised bands, a gilt stamped title and floral designs on the spine, and double gilt ruled borders on the boards. His remarkable ceramic achievements and accomplishments have been recognized and held in high esteem continuously by both aficionados and technical specialists alike, since the year 1790 when, as a young craftsman at the renowned Derby China Factory, he was suddenly called upon to assume the role of head flower painter, in completing an important order for the matching of some valuable early Chelsea plates with profuse botanical plant decoration. This copy is signed by W. H. John on the front flyleaf. It is also inscribed by Sir Leslie Joseph to the Duchess of Bedford (Nicole Russell): "Her Grace the Duchess of Bedford from Leslie Joseph." Nicole Russell (1920-2012) was one of the first female television producers in France, working on projects which included "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." Also notable, is the fact that she had been a courier for the Resistance in Paris during the Second World War. In 2003, Russell spent some time living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to Anne Constable (The Santa Fe New Mexican), while living in Santa Fe, she [Russell] wrote to Queen Elizabeth II, suggesting that fake fur be substituted for the bear skin used in the hats worn by her guards. Her memoir, published in 1975, was titled "Nicole Nobody.
