Stanford, California: Stanford University Press, 1976. Second Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Quarto size, 627 pp. and 125 pp., respectively; main volume with dust jacket, Supplement volume without. A comprehensive and indispensible guide to "books, pamphlets, and other materials dealing with the local history of California communities and regions. First published in 1950 as "California Local History: A Centennial Bibliography", this unique reference has...now been completely revised and enlarged: more than 17,000 items in some 230 libraries are included. The additions consist of items published in 1949-61, earlier publications that were previously omitted, adn the contents of libraries contributing for the first time" (n.b., from the dust jacket front flap). The author, Margaret Miller Rocq, was for many years the Chief Librarian of the Standard Oil Company of California Library, and was also actively involved in the Special Library Association and the California Library Association. ___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes bound in brown cloth with gilt lettering on the spines, the main volume quarto size (11" by 7 3/4"), pagination: [i-xvi], 1-611; the Supplement volume also quarto size (11" by 7 3/4"), pagination: [i-xii], 1-113. The main volume only with a dust jacket of gold laid paper with black lettering, original price of $35.00 on the front flap, summary of the book also on the front flap, publisher's ads on the back flap and back panel. ___CONDITION: Main volume is near fine, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the corners lightly corner bumped but unrubbed, and just discernably prior pencil markings (likely a prior bookseller) at the top of the front pastedown. The dust jacket very good, complete and not price-clipped; some light overall soiling and edgewear. The Supplement volume very good, clean, the text block strong and square with solid hinges; light wear to the binding and a prior owner name written at the top of the front free endpaper. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
