Description
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Company, 1960. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. With a heartfelt TLS from Harper Lee to reader Anne M. Virgil, wishing her a happy birthday and reflecting on the emotional experience of receiving a reader's feedback: "It's letters like yours, not book reviews, that keep a writer at work. Ours is the loneliest profession in the world, and nothing pleases us more than to hear from someone who likes our work, because after all, we write for people like you." The letter is dated September 17, 1960, just two months after the publication of the novel. With a typed envelope addressed to Anne M. Virgil in San Francisco. A Near Fine copy in Very Good+ dust jacket. Publisher's green cloth over brown paper boards. Edges of boards a bit sunned. With the bookplate of Anne M. Virgil to upper pastedown. Dust jacket with some wear and a bit of chipping to edges. Back panel with some abrasion and couple shallow scratches near flap fold. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco clamshell case. Overall a nice example with a heartfelt letter from Lee to a reader. To Kill a Mockingbird is Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning coming-of-age novel set in Maycomb, Alabama. An American classic, which took Lee over two years write, was inspired by her own upbringing - in fact, Lee's father was a lawyer who had defended Black clients at the cost of his practice. Its production was not without difficulty and Lee once became so angry over the course of writing the novel that she tossed the manuscript out a window. The book has never been out of print, has sold tens of millions of copies, and is required reading for the American adolescent. To Kill a Mockingbird was also adapted by Horton Foote into a 1963 film, directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck, which won three Oscars. The letter reads in full: "September 17, 1960. Dear Miss Virgil: Please accept this belated but heartfelt, 'Thank you!' for your wonderful letter and your kindness in writing it. It's letters like yours, not book reviews, that keep a writer at work. Ours is the loneliest profession in the world, and nothing pleases us more than to hear from someone who likes our work, because after all, we write for people like you. Sincerely yours, Harper Lee." Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Description
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1912. Small octavo (6 9/16 x 4 3/16 inches; 167 x 106 mm.). [x], [1]-1084 pp. Printed on thin india paper. Bound by Rivière & Son ca. 1912 in full midnight blue morocco, covers elaborately stamped in gilt pointille in a wonderful floral design. Red morocco doublures with an elaborate gilt design, cream watered silk end leaves, all edges gilt. Spine with five raised bands elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, double gilt ruled board edges. Joints very slightly cracked - almost invisible. How does one honor the expansive history poetic output in the English language? That appears to be the motivating question behind the famous poetry anthology The Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900. Compiled and edited by the novelist Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), also called Q, this epic collection would go on to be a turn-of-the-century best-seller (almost 500,000 copies of the first edition). A temple of poetry, this volume includes all of the greats and some hidden lyrical treasures. A spectacular binding from the house of Rivière & Son during the best years. The elaborate pointille design is almost breathtaking and the inner red morocco doublures equally pleasing. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" (Princeton). Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned.

Description
London: Richard Bentley, 1864. First English language edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with morocco label to spine. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Measuring 179 x 119mm and collating complete including photographic frontis: x, 374. A square, tight copy with some loss to upper spine label and gentle rubbing to boards. Amorial bookplate to front pastedown. Light scattered foxing largely confined to preliminary and terminal leaves; pages 161-162 partially detached but holding. A female-authored memoir that participates in both anti-Catholicism and convent-fetish eroticism, it is somewhat scarce institutionally but is a rarity in trade with its most recent appearance at auction occurring a century ago. The present is the only example currently on the market. Frank in her delivery, Henrietta Caracciolo recounts how her rise to young womanhood under the jealous eye of her mother -- combined with the untimely death of a sympathetic father -- led to her unwilling confinement in a Benedictine convent. Denied early opportunities for engaging in the courtship and marriage economy she longs to be a part of, Henrietta Caracciolo instead is forced by her mother to repress her sexual identity and disappear into a life of solitude and chastity. What she finds there instead is a space of sexual abuse, unexplained deaths, illicit affairs, physical abuse, and theft. "My sole aim in writing these Memoirs has been to confirm," she writes in the preface, "as far as lay in my power, with the arguement drawn from fact, the opportune and just decree of the Italian government in the suppression of Convents, and to disabuse the minds of those (if haply any such remain) who deem these places the repositories of religious virtues." Timely social commentary in her native Italy, her memoirs hit a different note in Protestant England where Catholic convents and monasteries had long been closed; indeed, it participated in the anti-Catholic fetish fantasy of convents and monasteries as bastions of deviant and violent sexuality. She herself, by the memoir's end, emerges to a new and more promising life -- one which participates in popular Victorian cult of domesticity and motherhood, which she positions as far more godly and fulfilling. Yet it also leaves open the door of female desire and sexual fulfilment. "By the side of a husband who adores me, and to whom I respond with equal love, I am where the Almighty placed woman at the close of Creation's first week." Register of Erotic Books 2950.

Inscribed by Sinclair Lewis on front free endpaper: "To Mr. + Mrs Will Owen Jones Christmas, 1920 William Allen White asks me to send you this book in Christmas greeting- + he let me tag along after hin!/ Sinclair Lewis Washington Dec. 1920." The inscription is probably to William Owen Jones managing editor of the Nebraska State Journal and author of the book By Land and Sea, a publication on foreign travel. Octavo (7 3/8 x 5 inches; 187 x 127 mm). [2, blank], [8], 451, [3, blank] pp. Original dark blue cloth stamped in orange on front cover and spine. Spine lightly sunned and the edges of the spine and boards with a small amount of wear. Small booksellers stamp on front pastedown. Overall a very good copy. The most famous novel by the first American to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. Main Street is a satirical book taking aim at the fantasy of a perfect American small town, inspired in part by Lewis's own hometown. The plot follows Carol Kennicott as she attempts to open the minds and change the ways of her fellow citizens in Gopher Prairie, Minnesota. "Main Street is an exposé of midwestern small-town life, depicting the prejudices of America's villagers and expressing the quintessential statement of the 'revolt against the village' introduced by nineteenth-century novelists such as E. W. Howe and Joseph Kirkland. Lewis's satirical wit and his skill at creating memorable characters, however, set him apart from his literary predecessors. The novel was not only a bestseller, but a cultural phenomenon...The novel was controversial, however, some reviewers seeing it as unfair to the small town and even unfair to the American character. In part because of its controversial nature, the novel was passed over for the Pulitzer Prize, for which it was a major contender in 1921." (American Dictionary of National Biography). Very Good.

London: Printed for Carnan and Newbery, 1767. PRIMER. London: Printed for Carnan and Newbery, at no. 65, in St. Paul's Church-yard, and B. Collins at Salisbury. [n.d.c.a. 1776]. An early edition the Newbery Royal Primer, the precursor to the New England Primer. This edition is unrecorded as Roscoe does not list a Carnan and Newbery imprint. The sheets, besides the imprint and the advertisement p. [1] match Roscoe 5b "The text of the TP is surrounded by an ornamental frame of oval lozenges. The letter A in the 1st line of verse on p. [2] is immediately below B in 'Books' in the line above." However, the advertisement imprint on p. [1] matches that of Roscoe 5a. The advertisement on p. [1] is for the Third edition of the "Royal Psalter" which records indicate was printed in 1776, however Roscoe states that this advert could be referring to a reprinting of the 3rd edition. Roscoe lists 12 different editions or variants of Newbery's Royal Primer but locates only four copies. Of the copies we could find at auction, besides the present copy, there have been only 3 complete copies sold of any edition. In 1978 Sothey's sold the only other copy we can locate with this Carnan And Newbery imprint. They stated "This is the only known copy of a hitherto unrecorded edition." That copy is incomplete and presently located at Princeton. Princeton notes the date to be 1767-1768. One small twelvemo volume (3 1/4 x 3 inches; 85 x 75 mm). [1]-72 pp. Complete with two leaves of woodcut alphabet containing 24 small woodcuts, and 26 additional woodcuts including the frontispiece. Original Dutch floral paper boards. Some repairs to spine and board edges. Some minor staining to a few leaves. Still a very good copy, better than usually found as it is a children's book. This primer contains the alphabet and a short scripture catechism There are woodcuts of animals and birds, and illustrations of some Bible stories and virtues. HBS 69617. $8,500.

Description
8/3/88. We obtained this letter from the Kirkpatrick family, and it has never before been offered for saleThe Washington Summit of 1987 was meeting between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev that took place on December 8–10. Reagan and Gorbachev discussed regional conflicts in Afghanistan, Central America, and Southern Africa, arms control issues for chemical weapons as well as conventional weapons, the status of START (limitation on strategy weapons) negotiations, and human rights. Some progress was made in these areas. The notable accomplishment of the Washington Summit was the signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty which banned all of the two nations' land-based ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and missile launchers. By 1991, almost 2,700 missiles had been eliminated. Needless to say, the collegial atmosphere of the talks, and the feeling that Gorbachev was a man you could work with, caused great excitement in the United States after half a century of Cold War.In 1988, former President Nixon wrote a book, 1999: Victory Without War, which offered his comprehensive strategy for the West—a vital plan of action that would help ensure peace, prosperity, and freedom in the next century. In it, he provided commentary and suggestions in the area of his great expertise, foreign policy. He began by arguing that the United States should continue to play a central international role. He contended that world peace is inseparable from world power and that real peace is not absence of conflict but living with unending conflict the natural state of world affairs. He sought to tamp down the popularity of Gorbachev, whom he saw as seeking change that would permit the Soviet Union to find hegemony. Still, he cogently argued for a realistic policy toward the Soviets, involving a mix of deterrence, competition, and negotiation. His hard-line views are on display in other areas. On nuclear armaments, he endorsed Reagan's plan for laser-based weapons in space (""Star Wars"") and urged ""no first-strike vulnerability."" He advocated continued support of Nicaragua's contras, covert CIA actions overseas, build-up of nuclear power, more U.S. cruise missiles in Europe, the establishment of U.S. air bases in Saudi Arabia. He blamed Africa's poverty on the terrible governments there. He strongly opposed the adoption of protectionist trade measures against Japan.Jeane Kirkpatrick was a lifelong Democrat, working in both state and national campaigns including Hubert Humphrey's 1972 presidential campaign. She grew increasingly dissatisfied, however, with the Democratic Party's liberal faction and in 1972 cofounded the Coalition for a Democratic Majority. Her conservative writings regarding U.S. foreign policy impressed Ronald Reagan, and during his 1980 presidential campaign she was selected as his foreign policy advisor. Under President Reagan, she became the first woman to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, serving from 1981 to 1985. She was also given cabinet rank and was also a member of Reagan’s national security team. She remained active in politics, but as a Republican.Nixon sent Kirkpatrick an advance copy of his book. Typed letter signed, on his letterhead, New York, March 8, 1988, to Kirkpatrick, in which he makes it clear that he does not share the excitement about Gorbachev and still distrusts the Soviets. “The enclosed proofs of 1999: Victory Without War represent my reflections after forty years of observing and participating in U.S. foreign policy. Some of our mutual friends will consider it to be too tough on the Soviets, but I thought it was essential to provide an antidote for the wave of euphoria that seems to have engulfed the West since the Washington summit. I think you may find the last chapter, in which I try to look into the future past the 1988 election, of particular interest.”Nixon’s distrust of Gorbachev, though hardly unexpected, proved baseless. Under Gorbachev’s leadership, the next year the Berlin Wall came down, in 1990 six republics left the Soviet Union, and in 1991 the Soviet Union dissolved altogether.

The collection contains a total of 128 pages of seals, printed in red and black on rice paper. Zhao's seal work has been noted by critics for its lack of sharply defined lines from knife carvings, and conversely his interest in the flow of ink on the seals, creating a smoother style, in more of an attempt to emulate the look and feel of calligraphy. The front of the first softcover volume contains b/w collotype reproductions of large-scale lithographic text by Zhao, and illustrated lithographic portrait of the artist. The first part contains prologue text by 葉銘 Yeh Ming and 丁仁 Ding Ren, two of the four founders of the Xiling Seal Art Society. Description
1945. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of four black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 4" x 5", without captions. Curled edges and small tears thus very good. A small archive of four sobering photographs taken of prisoners in a concentration camp during World War II. The men are pictured wearing the infamous "striped pajama" uniform of Nazi prison camps. One photograph shows a group of gaunt men lying in the dirt using cans and bricks as pillows, another shows two men helping up another with other prisoners huddled around them. The only words on any of the photos comes from a sign in one listing times for the ambulance. It is unclear who took the photos but it could be assumed that they were taken during the Allied liberation of the camps at the end of the war. A small but compelling group of photographs documenting the atrocities of World War II.

Description
Folio (295 x 205 mm.), attractive antique marbled boards. Spain: ca. 1737. An unrecorded manuscript addition to an edict issued by Philip V in 1737, renewing a 1699 Spanish ban on foreign silk imports. At this time, Spain had a robust silk industry, centered in cities such as Sevilla and Valencia. This documents a survey of Spain’s silk production in the 1730s and predicts the benefits that will come with augmented isolationist economic policy. Highly legible and in fine condition. Tightly trimmed margins and occasionally touching text. ❧ Codigos Españoles: Concordados y Anotados (1850), Vol. 9, pp. 259-60 (decree of 1737).

Description
[New York?], 1919. Very Good. 3 p. letter written in pencil on 3 sides of two sheets of plain white (more or less) stationery. Approx. 16 x 25 cm. 2 horizontal folds. Envelope not present. Letter to "Dearest:-" Fredii, full given name Fredericka Carolyn Washington, addresses the recipient as Einnie, perhaps a nickname, in the letter. A mostly cheery letter urging the recipient to ride on a roller coaster if she gets the chance. Fredi does mention some possible sickness or maybe a teenage heartbreak: "Well I cried all day Sunday and part of Monday, but the Dr. says if I don't have a relapse I'll be all right and he says he don't think a carriage ride would hurt my feet, [T]he Dr. he said that I need to get a good pair of walking shoes if I want to walk in New York City. I think that I will travel by car from now on. I almost had one tonight." Says nothing about school or work but Fredi had to drop out of high school at some point around this time and get a job -- maybe that led to the crying. Mentions getting a card from Isabell, probably her sister Isabel who also got involved in show business within a few years and whose second husband for twelve years (1933-1945) was Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. before he left her to marry a second wife. She also writes that Alice, Harold and she "..."were up at the store to-night to get some of the nice medicine from Germany." She ends her letter with "If you don't get this letter, be sure and let me know. Good-bye. S,W.A.K. Lovingly, Fredi Washington." The Amistad Center and the New York Public Library have Fredi Washington archives, neither of which seems to have anything dated earlier than 1922. She turned out to be a talented actress and dancer and got herself into the chorus line in "Shuffle Along" in 1921. Her light skin made it hard to get a lot of parts in movies and plays since she was too light and too pretty for the maid and housekeeper roles open to African American women and too light skinned for romantic roles. Her most notable movie was "Imitation of Life, in which she played Peola, a light-skinned African American who is "passing" as white. Fredi was one of five founders of the Negro Actors Guild in 1936. She wrote on Entertainers and Entertainment, as well as other topics, in "People's Voice, a publication founded by Powell in 1942. She participated in various efforts to make America better and less racist. Her second marriage in 1955 was to Hugh Anthony Bell, an African American dentist in Stamford, CT. He died in 1970.
