Description
1941. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1941. 8vo, 471 pp. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in silver on backstrip, in dust jacket. Dust jacket chipped at top of spine. Very good. ß First edition. Publisher s complimentary copy, with enclosure slip. One of the most important 20th-century literary and photography books, an extended essay on rural poverty with the now-iconic photos of Walker Evans. In the summer of 1936, during the Great Depression, Agee and Evans spent eight weeks on assignment for Fortune magazine, living with three white sharecropper families in southern Alabama. Through interviews and photographs Agee and Evans created a moving document of the piercing misery and poverty of Depression-era south. Fortune chose not to publish the resulting article, and instead the material became this book. Though it was largely ignored on publication in 1941 and sold only 600 copies before being remaindered, its renown has since built steadily and it is now considered Agee s masterpiece. It inspired Aaron Copland s opera The Tender Land, President Jimmy Carter named it as his favorite book, and it was credited as a formative influence by David Simon, the journalist and creator of acclaimed television series The Wire. It is now placed among the greatest literary works of the 20th century by the New York School of Journalism and the New York Public Library.

London: Andrew Dakers Ltd, n.d. [1950]. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 24cm. Publisher's green cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. 221pp. Light wear and scuffing to corners and spine ends, sunning to extremities, strong and tight; internally clean, bookplate to verso of front flyleaf, illustrated throughout; in a clean photographic dustkacket with some wear and shallow fraying to the extremities, and a little soiling in places. A very good copy. A detailed and interesting anthropological study of the various peoples and tribes which make up the region we refer to as "The Congo." Necessarily presented in a rather sensationalist and at times less than respectful way, it nevertheless embarks upon a journey of research and scholarship and completes it creditably; doing away with a number of preconceived beliefs about the region and contributing to the body of contemporary knowledge.

Description
Knoxville, Tennessee: University of Tennessee Press, 2005. First Edition. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's original black cloth titled in yellow to the spine. Dustjacket. [xxv]; 483pp. Some very light wear to spine ends and extremities, in a dustjacket with some very slight marginal wear and creasing. A very good, bright copy indeed. Internally clean, some light soiling to the fore-edge. One of Lovett's intentions in this work, the first to specifically provide a reference for civil rights developments in Tennessee, was to suggest that the history of the African-American struggle for rights and recognition in that state actually extends way back into the 19th century rather than being more concentrated in the mid 20th century. The movement is subdivided into three periods; the Civil War years, the 1880's-1930's, and then 1935 onwards, with a focus on early Jim Crow and a significant portion on the desegregation efforts in Tennessee schools.

New York: The British Book Centre, 1954. Sixth Printing Stated. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's yellow cloth titled in red to spine and front board. Dustjacket. Some light wear and scuffing to the extremities of the cloth, minor bumping to spine ends, in a dustjacket which is bright and clean, but has seen some wear, the most obvious defect being a triangular portion of loss to the upper edge of the front panel, interfering with the word "Flying", there are some other minor chips and creases. The loss to the wrapper relegates this copy to a good, solid and readable copy. Internally clean. A dual effort where Leslie investigates the history and possible ancient origins of flying saucers legends, while Adamski gives his personal eye witness account of a UFO in Mount Palomar, CA.

Description
Liverpool: F C Farmar & Son (Sole Maker and Patentee), ca1900. As issued.. Very good/fine.. 23 inch, single slide boxwood rule with bronze end caps; ruled both sides. Based on patents held by Farmar beginning 1899 It is not an excise rule but has scales for gauging, stocktaking, alcohol percentage, profit, proof and other similar calculations. Farmar's spirit slide rule was a tool used, among other things, to calculate how much water is needed to reduce the strength of a liquor. The calculation is not complex. It is, however, tricky because of the fact that when alcohol and water are mixed there is a net contraction in the volume, thereby introducing an error into the "proof" result which is based on volumes. It is from this that the proper excise tax was calculated. Hence the importance of an accurate measure of "proof". Farmar's is the first rule to account for this. See Journal of the Oughtred Society, vol. 30, #1, 2021, pp. 5 - 17 for the very detailed Greg Miller and Tom Martin article.

Description
Allentown PA: Lightning Arranger, 1931. An oblong 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" celluloid device with two (2) side by side wheels, with a eight (8) window openings on each side. One side is designed to find dominant and sub-dominant chords by setting both wheels to key. It includes Seventh Chords and Major Chords. The reverse is for all instruments including pianos and violins tuned in C. One wheel represents Ninth Chords, the other Minor Chords. Originally had a booklet explaining chord progression and instructions for transposing and outlines chord structure. Invented by Samuel "Skip" Rapoport, the Lightning Arranger, was a device for arranging orchestrations and transposing music. Rapoport said his device arranges music mathematically, the way music is arranged. It works by turning a wheel on the device, which in turn reveals the appropriate information on another part of the cardboard unit. It sells for $6 and was manufactured for him by a New Jersey company. The arranger comes with a booklet that explains chord progression, provides instructions for transposing and outlines chord structure. It claims to be a simplified method for arranging orchestrations. Literature on the device claims it's good for musicians, arrangers of music, band and choir directors, orchestra leaders, music instructors, supervisors, students of music, singers, accompanists, music teachers, beginners and composers.
