Description
Upper Mall, Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1898. Near Fine. One of 300 paper copies. There were also eight vellum copies. This is one of the most desirable books to be printed at perhaps the most influential and famous of all private presses. A total of 52 books were produced during the several years it was active. In his definitive history of the Kelmscott Press, William Peterson describes this as "the penultimate book printed at the Kelmscott Press and an interesting example of how Cockerell (Sydney, who was the second Secretary of the Press.) was compelled to solve book-design difficulties on his own, as no work had been done before October 1896" (Morris died on October 3 of that year). Peterson continues to write that while the last books printed by the Kelmscott Press did not display a dramatic falling off of quality, they represent a reversion to the simpler of ornamentation of the very earliest Kelmscott books. For this edition, Burne-Jones redrew the full-page woodcut he originally prepared for the earlier print edition about 25 years prior. Frontispiece and full-page woodcut by W. H. Hooper after Edward Burne-Jones, decorative woodcut border to frontispiece and facing first page of contents, further woodcut borders in the text, three-, six-, and eight-line woodcut initials. Text printed in blue, red, and black in Troy type, stage directions mostly in Chaucer type. In the original limp vellum with yapp edges. The spine has title lettered in gilt. All six of the green silk ties are present. Light soiling to spine and covers and covers are a bit splayed. Interior pages are in beautiful condition. Housed in a custom box wiith dark green spine and page edges, with titling and press name in gilt to spine. A near fine copy of this stunning book, one of the two final works to be issued by the press. The other was a A Note by William Morris on his Aims in Founding the Kelmscott Press. Measures 11.5 x 8.25 inches. 90 pages. PRI/041726.

Description
1839. SMITH, John Thomas Smith. The Cries of London. BOUND WITH: TUER, Andrew W. London Cries: with Six Charming Children. London: John Bowyer Nichols and Son / Field & Tuer, 1839, [1883]. Large quarto, late nineteenth-century three-quarter green morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $4000.First edition of this collection of this work on the street cries of London, extensively extra-illustrated (some of which are hand-colored) for a total of 114 plates. Bound together with London Cries, which is also extra-illustrated, with a total of 43 plates and almost 40 in-text illustrations, some of each of which are hand-colored.Although recorded as early as the medieval period, the 18th and 19th centuries saw the rapid expansion of the custom of London street hawkers using distinctive, lyrical calls to sell their wares; they were the object of much fascination for poets, musicians and writers throughout the period. John Thomas Smith, the author of Cries of London, was Keeper of the Prints Department at the British Museum and a determined student of London street life; other works of his include The Streets of London and Vagabondiana, or Anecdotes of Mendicant Wanderers through the Streets of London. This copy has been bound with an additional title page indicating that it was extra-illustrated in 1885 by H.N. Pym, with his bookplate. Pym privately printed a guide for guests at his own house called Odds and Ends at Foxwold (1887) which describes this copy: ""Bound by Tout, and extra-illustrated by the addition of 135 fine portraits and prints, including a set of Caracci's 'Cries of Bologna'; Craig's 'Cries of London,' hand-coloured; rare prints by Hogarth and Cruikshank; original drawings by Rowlandson and Pugin. Amongst the portraits are proofs of, —J.T. Smith, Rowlandson, Nelson, John Nichols, Jackson, R.A., James I., Ben Jonson, Herrick, Bewick, Gillray, Storace, Woolderidge, Hollar, Queen Charlotte, Grisi, Bartolozzi, Shelley, Blake, Shiavonetti, Prince Consort, Cipriani, &c.""Fine condition.

It introduces both Harry and readers alike to the secret, magical world of wizards and witches in England. Although often regarded as a children's novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone topped adult reading charts in both the United States and the UK. There was a later edition which contained 120 lithograph plates Extraordinary magazine of subjects drawn by Victor Adam of black lithographed plates, like so many vignettes borrowed from his past or future thematic albums (Animals of all species, Horses and riders, Little tales put into action, etc. ) or even illustrations from the albums of Allouard and Koeppelin or Micheland France in the 14th and 15th centuries or Memorable Facts in the History of France, etc. Published in 1855 under the title The Fair of Ideas (1851-1854) Grrrrrande exhibition of sketches, loads, drolleries, caricatures, costumes, games, animals, fantasies, the plates were printed in quarto format, lithographed by Becquet frères and coated of the signature V. Adam with the current title La Foire aux Idées, by V. Adam, and the address Paris - Monrocq brothers publishers Lith. Becquet brothers in Paris. Smaller format albums were published under the same title where each original board was divided into two parts. Jean-Victor Adam... is the son and pupil of the engraver Jean Adam; he made himself known as a painter of battles. His lithographic production was abundant, to the point that "one can regret that the artist did not curb his overflowing facility; maybe he would have won, for he was not without talent (?) However, it would be very surprising if, among the thousands of pieces of a draftsman who takes his subjects from the news, the curious did not find some useful and interesting information. (Beraldi). Jean-Victor Adam (1801-1867) was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam, an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles, amongst which are, 'The Entry of the French into Mainz,' 'The Battle of Varroux,' 'The Taking of Menin, 'The Battle of Castiglione,' 'The Passage of the Cluse,' 'The Battle of Montebello,' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV., after the Battle of Coutras,' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri,' 'The Postillion,' 'The Vivandiere,' 'The Road to Poissy,' 'The Return from the Chase,' 'Horse-fair at Caen,' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity, till 1846, when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography, to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album, 'Views in the Environs of Paris,' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon,' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824, a second class medal in 1836, besides several others from Lille, Douai, and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866. The Engravers of the 19th Century, guide for the amateur of modern prints, 1885, I, p. 19, n°9 under the heading "Macedonias and Placards": "album of a hundred sheets with small subjects, it is one of the most famous collections among all those that Victor Adam drew". Description
Amsterdam: heirs of the widow of C. Stichter, 1752. 8vo (158 x 95 mm). [48] pages. Printed in red and black throughout. Woodcut arms of Amsterdam on title. 12 half-page woodcuts in calendar. Interleaved and bound with 2 blank leaves at front and 72 at back. Annotated by a contemporary owner with a couple of stray notes on interleaves and a total of 70 pages of manuscript historical notes on the blank leaves at end (one blank leaf almost detached). Contemporary plain green parchment over thin pasteboards, flat spine, large flap extending from lower cover, the parchment of the upper cover not attached to upper fore-edge, leaving a slot to insert the flap, lower free endleaf backed in pasteboard and with folding leather-lined pieces at top and bottom attaching it to lower cover, thus forming a wallet or envelope. *** Part almanac, part blank book, this useful volume is bound in a supremely practical wallet binding, of a kind that was common once and is no doubt found in large numbers in historical collections, but which surfaces rarely in the book trade. The slot in the front cover to insert the folding tab from the lower cover protected the volume from Dutch weather, and the lower cover contains a pocket for loose papers or even money. The Amsterdam comptoir almanacs were issued yearly by successive members of the Stichter printing family from 1728 to the mid-19th century. Unlike their French counterparts, these Dutch almanacs were generously proportioned, being at least originally intended for the “counters” of merchants and businessmen, rather than for gentlemen’s or ladies’ pockets. The calendars were always interleaved, and the contents were standard: one page is devoted to each month, containing a half-page woodcut above a blank space for notes on the recto, and the monthly calendar on the verso. These woodcuts, each with a tiny inset astrological sign, show indoor and outdoor scenes: ice-sports in December and January, a family huddled by the fire, with boisterous children in the background, in February, tree-trimming and pruning in March, gardening in April, a pastoral scene with lovers in May, sheep-shearing in June, and so on. The blocks are here quite worn. Following the calendar are postal and transportation schedules (by coach or ship), 3 pages of astrological predictions, and a short chronicle of the year 1734 (someone forgot to update the sheets?). The contemporary reader who used this almanac / notebook (and whose hand seems feminine to me) was a student of history. The first 16 and 1/2 pages, at the beginning of the blank leaves, contain a list of Roman emperors. Toward the end of the blank leaves are 32 pages on the succession of the Dukes of Flanders, titled “Opvolgengen der Graven von Holland, uit het Goudasche Kronyken.” Short-Title Catalogue Netherlands 328765627.

Tan cloth covered boards. Very good, in good dust wrapper
Description
New York: HORIZON PRESS, 1952. First American Edition. Hardcover. Tan cloth covered boards. Very good, in good dust wrapper. First appearing in 1951, when rationing was still in force in Britain, David's book was an escapist read for the food starved public. This beautifully written cookbook - a classic, that should be read, sitting on a lawn chair while plotting your next meal. The food writer, Molly O'Neill said it best when she wrote: "Cooking wasn't a science to David; it was an art. Recipes today are created to be followed literally and slavishly, the culinary equivalent to paint-by-numbers. The recipes that David wrote nearly half a century ago are broad strokes on a canvas - she leaves the details to the cook, and for this reason, her recipes are neither dated nor dowdy, they are alive." Line drawings by JOHN MINTON. Owner's handwritten recipe index on front free end paper, otherwise clean. Boards lightly rubbed at edges. Dust wrapper heavily rubbed with chipping and previous tape repair on interior. Covered in protective mylar.

Description
Brooklyn, NY: Albertype Co, 1895. 5"x7" soft-cover thread/string bound album showing scenery in Richmond, Virginia c.1895. Front cover with wear especially along spine; binding is lost but pages are all excellent. ~~Adolph and Herman Wittemann founded the Brooklyn, NY Albertype Co. publishing company of postcards and "view books" around 1880. Adolph Witteman was the photographer of thousands of landmarks around America published in the "American Views" series of souvenir books. This volume credits him with the copyright of the views therein: 16 captioned black and white images of Richmond-area landmarks, such as the Jefferson Davis Mansion, Hollywood Cemetery, Washington's Headquarters, Broad Street, and Lakeside Park. ~~The book describes the images as photo-gravures, which refers to a process whereby the photographic negative is transferred to a metal plate, which is then etched. The etched plate allows for multiple high-quality prints to be produced. ~.
