Description
Amsterdam, 1730. No Binding. Fine. 22 ¼ x 18 ¼ inches. Full original color; fine. A superb, original color example of the first map of the Carolinas published outside of England. Though Mortier credited the map to Sanson, it was in fact closely derived from an English map, the extremely rare, separately issued "A New Map of CAROLINA" published by Thornton, Morden and Lea in 1685. Charleston is noted at its location on the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, both on the map and in an inset showing Charles Towne and the nearby plantations. Burden calls this edition of the map "very rare." Cumming 120; Burden 767, State 2.

Minor fading to spine, minor wear at top and tail. Frontispiece a bit faded as usual and with minor chipping along one edge
Description
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1854. Minor fading to spine, minor wear at top and tail. Frontispiece a bit faded as usual and with minor chipping along one edge. 8vo (231 x 141 mm). 54 pages, plus a folding photographic frontispiece, being an original salt print of a Greenfield, Massachusetts trackway slab with dinosaur tracks, executed by George M. Silsbee, and with two additional engraved vignettes in the text. Original blue cloth blocked in blind and lettered in gilt. First edition. John Collins Warren (1778-1856), surgeon and member of the Harvard Medical School faculty, performed the first operation using ether as an anesthesia (in 1846). John Warren also collected fossil tracks, with the help of his colleagues, from the Jurassic rocks of the Connecticut River Valley. 'Remarks on Some Fossil Impressions' is based upon a talk he gave at the Boston Society of Natural History on the fossil slab depicted in the frontispiece photograph. He states in the text, "we are indebted to photography for enabling us to represent the remarkable slab from Greenfield, and its numerous objects, in a small space, yet with perfect accuracy." This landmark book is generally considered to be the first American scientific book illustrated by a photograph and just the second American photographically illustrated book overall. Truthful Lens 181 states: "the image, generally faint, depicts a rock displaying fossil remains. Appearing shortly after the Homes of American Statesmen, this volume is the second American publication illustrated with a photograph." The photograph was made by Mr. Silsbee as stated on p. 52 (probably George M. Silsbee, active Boston, 1852-57). Truthful Lens 181; Burns. American Medical Publications with Photographs, p. 1250.

Description
New York: Gabriel Wells, 1924. Autograph Edition. Limited to 1,075 copies signed by the author, of which this is number 1,053. Thirty volumes (6 x 8 3/4 inches) occupying approximately 47 inches of shelf space. Bound by Stikeman for Charles Scribner's Sons in 3/4 crushed blue morocco over cloth, five raised bands, and gilt ruling to spines and boards. Top edges brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. Spines uniformly sunned. Approximately eight volumes with minor chipping or snagging to crowns. Overall a handsome set that presents well. A lion of French letters, Anatole France won the 1921 Nobel Prize for Literature in recognition of his wide-ranging contributions to literature. France's career spanned decades and genres, and he started writing as a journalist before publishing poetry and then novels. France is particularly celebrated for his novel Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard, published in 1881. At-times iconoclastic, France earned many enemies, both conservatives and progressives. The Catholic Church was no fan either, and they banned all of France's works the year after he won the Nobel Prize.

Description
Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1968. Octavo (23.5 x 16 cm.), x, 196 pages. FIRST EDITION. Castaneda's first book, a first-person narrative documenting his interactions with Mexican shaman don Juan Matus between 1960-65. The text was submitted as Castaneda's doctoral thesis in Anthropology at UCLA. 'The book is divided into two sections. The first section, The Teachings, is a first-person narrative that documents Castaneda's initial interactions with don Juan. He speaks of his encounters with Mescalito (a teaching spirit inhabiting all peyote plants), divination with lizards and flying using the "yerba del diablo" (lit. "Devil's Weed"; Jimson weed), and turning into a blackbird using "humito" (lit. "little smoke"; a smoked powder containing Psilocybe mexicana). The second, A Structural Analysis, is an attempt, Castaneda says, at "disclos[ing] the internal cohesion and the cogency of don Juan’s Teachings' (Wikipedia 12/15/20). In gray cloth-covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine. Dust jacket is unclipped (priced $5.95), with very light rubbing and soil. Near fine.
