Description
1838. London: Richard Bentley, 1838. 3 vols., small 8vo, [i-iv], [1] 2-331, [332]; [i-iv], [1] 2-307 [308]; [iii-iv], [1] 2-315, [316] pp. 24 engraved illustrations by George Cruikshank, 1 as frontispiece to each volume. With half-titles in vols. I and II, with the advertisement leaf at beginning of vol. III, the 4 pages advertisements at end of vol. I, but without the single-leaf list of illustrations in vol. I found in some copies only. Neat repairs to the cloth, first signature in vol. 1 strengthened, boards slightly bumped and spotted but generally a very good copy with bookplates in all three volumes. § First edition in original cloth, with the title page credited to "Boz" rather than Dickens, and with the Fireside plate as the final plate in volume three. The first edition of Oliver Twist in original cloth is a cornerstone in any Dickens collection. Publication of the serial in Bentley's Miscellany began in 1837, and "when Bentley decided to publish Oliver Twist in book form before its completion in his periodical, Cruikshank was forced to complete the last few plates in haste. Dickens did not review them until the eve of publication and objected to the "Fireside" plate...and also disliked having "Boz" on the titlepage. He voiced these objections prior to the publication and the plate and the titlepage were changed between November 9 and 16" (Smith, 34). Smith I, 4. Eckel, pp. 59-62. Provenance: Each volume with the bookplates of the Albert Henry Wiggen (1868-1951), noted book collector and "the most colorful and attractive figure in the commercial banking world," the only member of the Federal Reserve Bank to have a law written specifically against his actions (the "Wiggin Provision"). On the upside, he was also a noted book and print collector and a major donor to the Boston Public Library, the New York Public Library, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. This book passed to his son-in-law Lynde Selden whose two bookplates are also found in two of the three volumes.

Description
Paris: Chez F. Mazot, 1651. 172 x 118 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 3/4"). [3], 34 leaves, 35-39, [1] pp., [2] leaves. LOVELY CRIMSON CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT AND ONLAID, BY CAPÉ (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with onlaid green morocco cornerpieces and central quatrefoil, all filled and surrounded by delicate pointillé tooling in floral and paisley designs, raised bands, spine compartments tooled in pointillé, gilt lettering, richly gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In a felt-lined, morocco-lipped marbled paper slipcase. ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT, WITH 38 FULL-PAGE ILLUSTRATIONS, consisting of one portrait, two allegorical religious scenes (including title), and 35 illustrations of the Holy Eucharist, 40 pages of engraved text, 37 of these with text flanked by full-length figures of saints, accompanied by other religious symbols at head and foot of page, two framed with vignettes of angels or the Madonna, one page with text only. Front pastedown with "A W F" book label of bookseller Adrian Fluhmann. Duportal, "Étude sur les livres à figures," pp. 244-45; Brunet V, 624; Graesse VI, 4; Leaves perhaps (very lightly) washed and pressed, but an extremely fresh, clean copy IN A SPARKLING BINDING. Covered by a luxurious binding by Capé, this is a particularly attractive copy of a sumptuously illustrated prayer book composed entirely of engraved plates. According to Duportal, it is "One of three important publications whose engravings reveal the trend characteristic of religious illustrations in France between 1601 and 1660." The work opens with a dedication to Charles d'Aubespine, Marquis de Châteauneuf (1580-1653), with a full-page portrait by Guillame de Gheyn (b. 1610). The bulk of the book is made up of two groups of plates. Those in the first group, appearing primarily on the rectos, contain prayers in Latin and French flanked by pairs of saints; gaps in the prayers are filled by naturalistic flowers, insects, and birds. Many of these plates also include a scene (or two) in miniature, depicting the life of one or both of the saints or a vignette of angels. While just two of these engravings are signed "J. Collin," they all appear to be in the same hand, which demonstrates an impressive level of finesse and delicacy, depicting graceful figures with sure, light lines. Duportal notes that this artist had a "talent charmant," and that well-executed dry-points of this type are quite rare in French books of the period. The second group of engravings appear strictly on the versos, and depict the performance of a part of the Mass, beneath a cloud in which appears a relevant scene from the life of Christ. They are all unsigned, and clearly by a different hand with more rustic features--possibly "copies of originals published abroad," according to Duportal. The book concludes with two leaves of text framed by gamboling putti and the Virgin. Copies of this work can be found with varying numbers of leaves and engravings (apparently the result of multiple reprintings with added material produced between 1651-53), but the present item can be distinguished as an early (if not the very first) edition, as it does not contain "Privilege du Roy" dated 1652 or 1653. Furthermore, our copy also contains the earliest state of the plates, without the "I N R I" initials on the cross found on the title page, and with the earlier state of the verso engravings (before they were substantially reworked). Our edition seems to be quite rare, with OCLC finding just one other copy with the same sequence of contents, at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Genevieve. The stunning binding by Capé looks just as fresh and lustrous as the day it left its workshop. One of the most distinguished binders in France in the middle years of the 19th century, Capé (d. 1867) was especially well known for the delicacy of his work--which can be appreciated to full effect in the present example. He was the binder to the Empress Eugénie, and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of the second Empire." This is precisely the kind of book our former owner, the discriminating connoisseur-bookseller Fluhmann, would have owned..

Description
Paris: De l'imprimerie de Monsieur [i.e., P. Didot jeune], 1790. 243 x 154 mm. (9 1/2 x 6 1/4"). Two volumes.. LOVELY DARK BLUE STRAIGHT GRAIN MOROCCO BY BOZERIAN JEUNE (stamp-signed at foot of Tome I spine), covers with pretty gilt frame enclosed by double gilt rule, raised bands, spine gilt in panels with large millepoint ornament with floral tools emanating from a central circle, gilt lettering, turn-ins with Greek key roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece and six engravings by Cochin and Moreau as called for, all before letters, and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 24 engravings by Marillier, here in proofs before the letter, and with three versions of the portrait of Fénélon by Vivien, engraved by Hubert, Figuet, and Savart. Cohen-de Ricci, col. 386-87 (noting the addition of the Marillier plates to some copies); Graesse II, 565; Brunet II, 1215-16. Spine evenly a little sunned, Marillier plates with minor marginal foxing, isolated small smudges to the (very generous) margins, one quire a little yellowed, a couple of leaves with small holes to a margin due to paper flaws, but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY--clean, fresh, and bright, in a most appealing binding with almost no signs of wear. Our copy of Fénélon's political allegory featuring the son of Odysseus is a very fine example of French Rococo book production, with printing, illustration, and binding by leading practitioners of those arts. Scion of a printing dynasty, Pierre-François Didot jeune (1732-95) sought to improve the family's productions by founding a factory to product the luxurious papers that characterize Didot editions, as well as by making improvements in type-founding to refine their always-admired font. Ray considers illustrators Cochin and Moreau le jeune part of the Rococo pantheon of greats headed by Boucher, Gravelot, and Eisen. He praises Cochin’s "mastery of outline and firmness of composition," as well as his "acute observation and unpretentious humor." Ray was also impressed with Moreau's keen eye for detail, and agreed with the Goncourt brothers that "the grace and charm of his drawing . . . brought about 'a renaissance in the rococo style.'" Forced by financial necessity to take up book illustration, Pierre-Clémént Marillier (1740-1808) soon earned what Ray called "a position in the front rank of book artists" with his skill and energy. Ray deems Marillier "among the most accomplished" illustrators of the century, and he says that "nearly all of his designs are characterized by grace, liveliness, and firmness of drawing”—a fitting description for the plates in our volumes. François Bozerian, generally called Bozerian jeune, was active in Paris from just after the turn of the century until 1818, and for much of that time, he worked with his elder brother Jean-Claude (1762-1840). The Bozerian workshop produced many fine bindings for clients that included the emperor Napoleon I, as well as leading bibliophiles of the day. Their works are valued today especially for their technical achievement and refinement of design. Our two volumes are especially elaborate--even for Bozerian work--and the precision of the faultless finishing here leaves a very strong impression of rigorous order..

[8]pp (Title, Preface, Table of Contents, Limitation page), 10 leaves (Plates), 10 leaves (Suite of the plates). Original gilt-tooled full vellum, with gold lettering to spine. Marbled endpapers. Title page in red and black lettering. Jean Auscher's striking series of 10 wash drawings highlighted in pochoir render a vivid, joyful, pittoresque, and at times acerbic vision of people dancing at Parisian nightclubs in the 1920s. The ten drawings are followed by a suite of the same plates without the pochoir highlighting. Each illustration measures appr. 8 1/2 x 11", and is tipped in onto heavy cardstock. Text pages on Japan paper. One of the 50 Hors Commerce copies this being the only known HC copy printed on Japan Nacre from, a total edition of 1,178. Minor and sporadic rubbing along edges of binding. Covers slightly warped. Text in French. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. About the artist: Jean Auscher (1896-c. 1950) was a 20th century French artist, caricaturist, and illustrator. Auscher was a pupil at l’Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. His work was exhibited at Le Salon d'Automne and Le Salon des Tuileries between 1923 and 1933. His most characteristic work recorded the life "des Années Folles" in the Paris of the 1920s, including scenes in the casinos, gambling clubs and dance halls, evoking the decadence of the demi-monde. He also recorded the theatrical community with portraits of actors, some in their famous roles, such as Louis Jouvet as "Le Trouhadec indigne" and the clown Grock. His best-known work appeared in limited edition folios published by the artist himself ("La Faune des Dancings," 1925 and "Le Baccara," circa 1926). Many copies of the lithographs contained in these were heightened with watercolor. He contributed to the satirical journal "Le Rire"; he also illustrated works by Irène Némirovsky, who was rediscovered when "Suite Française" was republished in 2004. Andre Haguenauer ("Les Amertumes," 1925) and Alfred Machard ("Printemps Sexuel") provided Auscher with subject matter that was again towards the margins of conventional attitudes to sexuality. The first illustrated edition, one of 751 copies, quarto size, 698 pp., signed by both Maugham and Schwabe, with publisher's slipcase. William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) became a renowned author and playwright; this work, "Of Human Bondage", is now regarded as his masterpiece. The novel was made into a film on three separate occasions: in 1934 starring Bette Davis; in 1946; and again in 1964 starring Kim Novak. First published in 1915, this the first illustrated edition, issued as a limited edition (this no. 578 of 751 copies) signed by both the author and illustrator. The illustrations by Randolph Schwabe (1885-1948), a recognized British painter and etcher who, among many other achievements, was the Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College, London, for eighteen years. Schwabe also worked as a draughtsman, and his attention to detail and lines are apparent in the evocative illustrations. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full tan linen cloth over bevelled boards, publisher's device in gold and brown stamped onto the front board, stamped brown spine "label" with gilt lettering, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, limitation page preceeding the half-title with the signatures of both Randolph Schwabe and W. Somerset Maugham, this no. 578 of this first illustrated edition, monochrome (in sienna) frontis one of twenty-four bound in throughout, title page in brown and black; quarto size (9 3/4" by 7 1/8"), pagination: [2, limitation page with blank verso] [i-iv] v-x [2, half-title with blank verso] 1-684. Description
(MOTORCYCLES). This archive belonged to R.C. Sahlin, who in 1915 purchased a Canadian motorcycle and had it imported into the United States. The archive consists of three documents: A)Document. 4 x 8. November 15, 1915. Toronto. This document is a bank note for the Bank of Hamilton and its Queen & Spadina Branch, Toronto. The bank note provides On demand the sum of $202.50 To R.C. Sahlin Greenwich Conn U.S.A. This was most likely the money used by Sahlin to purchase the motorcycle and/or prepare for its passage to the United States. The note is stamped with the bank branchs official stamp and signed by WJ Porter. The Bank of Hamilton was established in 1872. Like the other Canadian-chartered banks, it issued its own paper money, and this bank issued notes from 1872 to 1922. B)Document. 8 x 10. November 30, 1915. Niagara Falls, NY. This document is from C.J. Tower Custom House Broker and is a letter from CJ Tower to RC Sahlin Greenwich Conn. The letter indicates that his firm has shipped 1 Crtd Motorcycle Car 94125 NYC valued at $203having been shipped from Toronto Ont by WCJ Porter. The letter indicates that a customs declaration is required for imports worth more than $100, which must be responded to for the bond that Tower provided to pay for passage to be cancelled. According to his grandsons obituary, Clarence Jerome Tower founded this customs house brokerage firm in 1913. Just two years later, it was already the customs agent for ten different railroad lines. The company was sold to Fed Ex in 1990, which owned it as of 2014. C)Document. 1 pg. 5 x 8. N.d. Greenwich, Connecticut. This document is the American fright bill for the shipping of the motorcycle. The document indicates that it was shipped by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Company (the document is on paper from that company), that the motorcycle was cosigned by W.J. Porter, and that the total cost of this journey was $54.82. There is also a stamp for Greenwich, Connecticut, indicating that this was the destination for the motorcycle and Sahlins hometown. All three documents are in good condition with some minor folds.
