Description
Norimbergæ: Apud Io. Petreium, 1535. FIRST EDITION. Title in red and black with large woodcut, full-page woodcut arms on recto of second leaf, numerous woodcut illustrations throughout text. First 4 numbered leaves (following preliminaries) are in facsimile on old paper. Full blindstamped calf in an antique style. Overall a fine copy. First edition of the earliest treatise on optics written by a European. An extremely rare work, the text of which is derived from the optics of Abu al-Hasan (Alhazen). It contains not only a summary of all that was known on optics to the ancients and to Alhazen, but also some original investigations. Divided into nine books, Witelo first sets forth a number of geometrical theorems providing the mathematical principles required for the optical demonstrations of the remaining books. He details the essential features of optical systems, including the theory of theory of the nature of light and the propagation of light or visible forms. In addition to the nature of radiation, light and color in straight or refracted lines, and the treatment of images in various mirrors, a portion of the book deals with the physiology of vision. Very little is known of Witelo (ca. 1230-ca. 1275) other than he was born in Poland. This book, important as a source of Greco-Arabian theories on optics, had a great deal of influence on future investigators throughout all ages, including Regiomontanus and Da Vinci, Maurolico, Tycho Brahe, Galileo and Descartes. Indeed, Kepler based his entire study of optics upon it.

Text in German and English.VG. Some bumping to the open ended slipcase, otherwise clean and unmarked.
Description
Leipzig: Spector Books, 2021. Softcover. Text in German and English.VG. Some bumping to the open ended slipcase, otherwise clean and unmarked.. 6 Volumes in open ended slip case. Duodecimo. Softcover. Glossy white illustrated wraps. color illustrations ; 17 cm. In summer 2021, the Museum Folkwang in Essen will be showing the work of Tobias Zielony in a large survey exhibition, featuring photographs and video works from the last twenty years. One of the key themes in Zielony's artistic work is youth culture, its relationship to background, status, and fashion, and the definition of identity associated with this in a realm where the realities of the medium are shifting. Digital culture has revolutionized the ways in which photographic images can communicate, fundamentally altering the idea of the self and self-representation. In Zielony's works, the subjects of his pictures appear as self-aware participants in this process of interaction, engaging in a global exchange of social codes and self-images, irrespective of the cultural and social differences between the people involved. Spector Books has consistently supported Zielony's work from the start of his career. In 2008 we published Trona, now in its third edition, followed by Manitoba (2011), Jenny Jenny (2013), and Vele (2014). This sus-tained process of close collaboration has given rise to an unusual idea for the catalogue for the Essen exhibition. It is to be published as a series of six small volumes, each showing two to four works in full and accompanied by a text that creates a counterpoint to these works in the form of an essay or piece of fiction. Six protagonists of the new literary generation, Sophia Eisenhut, Joshua Gross, Dora Koderhold, Enis Maci, Mazlum Nergiz, and Jakob Nolte, have agreed to take part in this project. Exhibition: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (25.06. - 26.09.2021).

Description
New York: The Living Theatre, 1985. Very Good +. [New York]: The Living Theatre, 1985. First Edition. Octavo (22cm); publisher’s illustrated wraps; 7pp. Wraps rather toned; interior pages slightly less so. A Very Good or better piece of Living Theatre ephemera.  Interior pages contain a brief essay by Laura Zelaznick, in response to a 1984 write-up that appeared in Performing Arts Journal. In the enflaming piece, “The Return of the Living Theatre: Paradise Lost” critic Gerald Rabkin laments that Living Theatre had diminished over several decades, losing its characteristic edginess and engagement with political and social issues. This decline, he argues, coincided with the group’s period of “European exile.” Of their productions upon returning to the United States, Rabkin writes, “(there is no other word) [than] disaster.”  Zelaznick’s retort is part-institutional history, part sassy clap-back, and part-manifesto. She asserts that theatre, “that most social of the arts,” always comments on the society in which it is performed and remains an effective revolutionary technique, regardless of its execution. Her tone is snarky — she writes, rhetorically, “Who am I to question the universe according to Performing Arts Journal?” and once accuses Rabkin of confusing an avant-garde play for the mainstream hit “Hair.” Elsewhere, her sarcasm gives way to utter sincerity.  Near the end of the piece, she offers a sort of mission statement: “Now you want art and life. … Well, I offer you the Living Theatre. … I offer you a lifetime commitment to a living Myth of peace and non-violent cooperation. A myth which expresses the innermost longings of humankind. I offer you an end to fear. I offer you jails, military bases, mental hospitals, town squares and even some theatres. I offer you Pittsburgh. I offer you the barrios of Brazil. I offer you a lifetime of peace rallies and benefits. How many languages did you say you speak? Well then, I offer you a tour of Europe; non-stop for 15 years. Any takers? Too risky?” Not separately cataloged in OCLC. Rabkin's quotes taken from the “The Return of the Living Theatre: Paradise Lost,” Performing Arts Journal, 1984. .

New York/London: D. Appleton-Century Company. Very Good. 1936 (c.1935). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [modest shelfwear, light water-spotting on front cover, spine cloth a little faded, non-authorial Christmas gift inscription in pencil on front endpaper]. (pen & ink illustrations & chapter-head drawings) A group of boarding-school girls investigate a mystery. The author had published her first book (under her maiden name, Josephine Dodge Daskam) in 1900, a collection of stories set at her alma mater, Smith College. By the mid-1930s she was well-established as an author of juvenile mysteries for girls; per Wikipedia, she also wrote on women's issues and was a pioneer in the Girl Scouts movement. (The copyright on this book is credited to the Girl Scouts, in fact, which suggests to me that it might have been previously published in serial form in some Girl Scout publication.) .
