Description
Uruapan, Michoacán, Mx, 1908. Very good.. Twenty-four silver gelatin photographs, each 4.75 x 6.75 inches and captioned in the negative, each affixed to the recto of thick cardboard mounts attached to cloth stubs. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth, string tied, with gilt titles on front cover. Some bowing throughout. Minor wear and soiling to covers. Minor silvering and light wear to some photographs. Likely a presentation album containing two dozen substantial and informative photographs produced during the opening of a Mexican meat-packing plant owned by an eccentric American tycoon in January 1908.  The factory was launched by American entrepreneur John Wesley De Kay (1872-1938), who moved from South Dakota to Mexico in 1899 and launched the Mexican National Packing Company; he is sometimes called the "Sausage King of Mexico." The present album shows his company's refrigerated railway cars, the attendees of the inaugural banquet (including a band hired for the occasion), exterior and interior views of the plant (including one of the killing room and another showing sides of beef hanging in cold storage), and much more. Each photograph includes an informative caption written in the negative, providing ample identification of each photograph's contents. In one image, Mexico's Vice President Ramón Corral (whose traveling party is featured in more than one photo) presses a ceremonial button to launch the plant's operation, while the rather bohemian-looking De Kay stands behind him. A couple of shots feature the soldiers of Vice President Corral's military guard, identified as the "Rurales." The year after this album was produced, De Kay tried his hand as a playwright. His 1909 Broadway production Judas starred Sarah Bernhardt, but was regarded as blasphemous and bombed. During the chaotic years of the Mexican Revolution, he helped buy weaponry for the Huerta regime, and sold his meat-packing empire to the government in 1914. No listings in OCLC for any other copies of this wonderful album exemplifying commercial diplomacy between the United States and Mexico in the first decade of the 20th century.

Description
[Champaign County, Ohio, 1816. Broadside, 8" x 12.5". Printed bond completed in manuscript. Tanned at margins and along old folds. Signed in ink by Clemans, Thomas, and Anderson. Docketed on verso. Very Good. This bond requires distillers to keep a detailed accounting of the amounts of liquors distilled, with separate accounts for foreign and domestic materials. The books were reviewed quarterly by a local Collector, who would assess the duties owed to the United States. The bond's text tracks Section 2 of Chapter XV of the Act of Congress passed at the 3d Session of the 13th Congress. "John Thomas settled about three miles south of Urbana, about where Mrs. Newell now lives, and had a distillery up the creek, between where the Newell and Donavan houses now stand... "Thomas Anderson was a noted well-digger in Salem Township at the same time Richard Stanhope was here. He was a soldier of the war of 1812; was not as steady a man as Richard; he would sometimes 'drink too much and fight too much,' yet with all had many good qualities, and was well known in Champaign County, and was honored as an old soldier. He has no doubt long since gone the way of all the earth, but do not quite remember the manner of his death." Ogden, THE HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO 214, 507-8 [1881].

Description
1965. Dunker, Thomas W., and Robert M. Dunker. Horseshit: The Offensive Review. Archive of the complete four-issue run of the underground countercultural magazine published in Hermosa Beach, California between 1965 and 1969. Working in Cultural / Representational Mode, the material reflects the confrontational aesthetics, anti-authoritarian politics, and underground publishing culture associated with the American counterculture and antiwar movements of the 1960s. Produced independently by brothers Thomas and Robert Dunker, both former military servicemen, the publication combined explicit satire, surrealist illustration, obscenity-driven provocation, and anti-establishment commentary directed against militarism, censorship, organized religion, and middle-class social conventions. The magazine provides insight into the underground press networks that emerged alongside the Vietnam War era counterculture, illustrating how independent publishers used inexpensive print formats and deliberately transgressive content to challenge state authority, conventional morality, and mainstream media culture. Dunker, Thomas W., and Robert M. Dunker. Horseshit: The Offensive Review. Hermosa Beach, CA: Gauntlet Press / Scum Publishing Company, 1965-1969. Complete archive of four issues. First editions. Saddle-stapled in illustrated pictorial wrappers. Each issue measures approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. Written primarily by Thomas Dunker and illustrated by Robert Dunker, the publication is visually dominated by stark black-and-white artwork depicting grotesque caricatures, militarized violence, sexual imagery, and absurdist social satire. Issue No. 1 prominently features a cover illustration of a U.S. Army soldier holding a rifle in one hand and a dead infant in the other beneath the caption "ATTACK!" Interior contents throughout the run include surrealist cartoons, explicit erotic drawings, satirical essays, poems, mock dialogues, and antiwar commentary rendered in deliberately chaotic layouts associated with underground comix aesthetics. The inaugural issue opens with "On Naming the Magazine," a meta-fictional dialogue proposing intentionally offensive titles including "The Diarrhea of Anne Frank," illustrating the publication's strategy of taboo violation and shock-based satire. Additional material includes "The Angled Banana," an absurdist parody of sexual manuals and recurring attacks on political institutions, organized religion, censorship regimes, and military culture. The publication's notoriety resulted in legal controversy, including the 1968 arrest of Berkeley bookseller Moe Moskowitz for distributing the magazine. The title additionally achieved underground cultural visibility through a reference by Frank Zappa in the song "German Lunch." The archive documents a particularly confrontational strain of the American underground press movement that emerged during the Vietnam War era alongside antiwar activism, psychedelic culture, sexual liberation movements, and expanding obscenity debates. Unlike more commercially visible countercultural newspapers, Horseshit embraced aggressively transgressive humor and graphic provocation as central editorial strategies, situating the publication within broader struggles over censorship, free expression, and the legal limits of underground publishing during the 1960s. Particularly notable is the combination of militarized imagery and anti-authoritarian critique produced by former servicemen during the escalation of the Vietnam War. Minor toning and light handling wear throughout with slight foxing to the cover of No. 4; staple bindings secure and interiors clean. Overall very good condition. A scarce and visually striking complete archive from the radical edge of the American underground press movement.

Description
Jersey City: Harold S. Williamson, 1932. Good plus.. Small broadside, inches. Previously folded. Minor edge wear. Moderate toning and dust soiling. An ephemeral handbill for a Depression-era meeting of the New Jersey Conference of Colored Republicans. The president of the conference, J. Mercer Burrell, was a Newark attorney and one of the first Black assemblymen to serve in the New Jersey statehouse. In 1933 he filled his seat as member of the Republican party, but was re-elected on the Clean Government line in 1934. This handbill advertises a April 30 (1932?) meeting at the Monumental Baptist Church in Jersey City, where "reports on [the] national situation and consideration of candidates for President and U.S. Senator" were to be discussed. The lower portion of the flyer prints a list of speakers, including a female Assembly candidate, La Bella Ortiz, and a roster of the local Jersey City Republican committee.
