Description
New York: Vincent Fitz Gerald & Company, 1987. First Edition in English. No. 13 OF 20 ARTIST'S PROOFS, SIGNED by the artist and translator, (from a total edition of 75 copies). 300 x 225 mm. (11 7/8 x 8 3/4"). [22] leaves. Translated by Michael Feingold. Bound and boxed by Zahra Partovi and David Bourbeau, the book with handwoven purple cloth cover by Sara Dochow. Housed in the original attractive red silk clamshell box with gilt title in sunken medallion on upper cover. With six color etchings by Welliver, one a double-page fold-out, executed in roulette mezzotint medium by Welliver and master printer Shigemitsu Tsukaguchi. Printed in Perpetua type on handmade Dieu Donne paper at the Wild Carrot Letterpress by Dan Keleher. Prospectus letter laid in. As new. Everything from the very intriguing fabric binding to the luxurious handmade paper (including even the tissue guards) demonstrates the care and craftsmanship that went into this publication. The beautifully produced edition of the Norwegian playwright's poems is illustrated with delicately colored woodcuts by American artist Neil Welliver (1929-2005) and Japanese master printer Shigemitsu Tsukaguchi, who also worked with Roy Lichtenstein and Richard Estes. Nature is often the subject of Ibsen's verses, and Welliver's expertise in depictions of the natural world made him the perfect choice of illustrator. Among the images here are an eider duck, a swan, a waterlily, and woodland landscape, the latter a specialty of Welliver, who made his home in coastal Maine, where he found inspiration for his art. As noted by Dr. John Silber, President Emeritus of Boston University, in his remarks at Welliver's memorial service, the artist "was devoted to Shigemitsu Tsukaguchi, who made remarkably detailed woodcuts used in the complex color prints of many of Neil’s paintings. Neil was awed by the craftsmanship and artistry of Tsukaguchi and felt beholden to him." The pure, sharp lines of the woodcuts here bring their subjects to life in a few simple strokes. Although the covers of the special copies of this work follow the same basic design, there are noticeable differences from copy to copy, with each book consequently having a unique binding..

Description
Salzburg: Meshulam Zalman b. Aaron, 1755. Revised. Hardcover. g. Folio. 15 leaves. Contemporary brown leather with gold tooling on the spine. Red edges and decorated floral endpapers. Illustrated title page with Moses and Aaron on the sides with depictions of the scenes from Genesis of Jacob stealing the blessing, the binding of Isaac and Jacob's ladder on the bottom. Revised edition of the 1695 Amsterdam Haggadah illustrated by the convert to Judaism Abraham b. Jacob. These woodcut illustrations are largely based on the work of the early 17th century Swiss Christian biblical artist Matthaeus Merian. Of particular note are the illustrations of Abraham smashing his father's idols, the four sons and the drowning of the Egyptians. Includes the "Zevach Pesach" commentary of Isaac Abarbanel as well as a mystical commentary. The songs Adir Hu, Ahad mi Yodaya and Had Gadya are translated into Judeo-German. Revised edition offers a larger and clearer print. This edition should not be confused with the Furth Haggadah printed in the same year also with the Abarbanel commentary. Text in Hebrew and Judeo-German. Inscription on front free endpaper. Name of previous owner on title page. Boards bowed, chipped and scratched. Hole in center of title page. Staining, chipping and creasing to leaves. Numerous leaves are strengthened. Overall in good condition. Yaari 138; Yudlov 216.

Description
1956. Fair. All in original wrappers, conditions vary from fair to very good (some wrappers chipped and worn; some textblocks browned and brittle on account of the WWI paper supply). One pamphlet is ex-Harvard (duplicate) with associated markings, another is a presentation copy. Small collection of 8 French pamphlets celebrating the patron saint of France, Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431). Reflects the continued fascination and scholarly interest with this remarkable young woman, her courage and her leadership, and how inspiring she has continued to be, even after nearly 600 years. The most interesting pamphlet in the collection -- in our opinion -- is Henri Debout's "Jeanne d'Arc et les archives anglaises" (1894) in which the author examines documents preserved in early English manuscripts that had been unexplored by French scholars. None of the pamphlets are in the Boston Public Library which holds the largest Joan of Arc collection in America. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection.
