Description
Buenos Aires: La Protesta, 1914. First Edition. First printing. 12mo (19cm). Printed card wrappers; 283,(1)pp; one folding plan inserted at p.72. A sound, Very Good copy in the original wrappers; old adhesive stain (possibly from bindery) to verso of rear wrapper; the plan with small punctures at folds; text fresh and unopened. Text in Spanish. A rare and curious work by this French-born Argentinian anarchist who, though little-known outside his native country, produced nearly twenty works of anarchist philosophy, both theoretical and imaginative, in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The current title, probably his best-known (it was reprinted by a Spanish academic publisher in 1991 and has been the subject of considerable academic analysis in recent decades), is a future utopia depicting the ideal libertarian city, to be built on the ruins of the now-defunct El Dorado, featuring, in addition to a host of standard anti-statist utopian tropes of the period, a few novel ones - including a death ray to be deployed against the "enemies of anarchy;" and separate housing for women, allowing them to escape the entanglements of marriage and the nuclear family in order to practice a form of free love based upon successive monogamies. Quiroule goes into some detail regarding the ideal relations of the sexes, as captured by critic Laura Fernandez Cordero: "... 'tournaments of love,' moments of furtive glances and modest agreements defined by 'solitude and mystery,' whether they take place in the house of the companion or in nature, 'with the silent complicity of the lush vegetation and intoxicating perfume of the flowers'... And do the women, once 'removed from the selfish domination of the male' - choose the most beautiful men? No, the 'superior feminine soul' is attracted to great moral and intellectual qualities; she gives herself only with extreme discretion..." (Laura Fernández Cordero, "Amor y sexualidad en las utopías anarquistas," in Nueva Ciudad Jan-Feb 2024; translation ours). Of special interest to Falconnet/Quiroule's work is the elaborate color-printed folding plan that comprises the book's only illustration. The plan depicts a city laid out on a symmetrical grid, with grand crossing boulevards with names such as "Avenue of Harmony;" "Avenue of Peace"; "Avenue of Humanity," etc. At the city center is a public square, the "Plaza de la Anarquía," for public performances and debates; outside the main boulevards the city is ringed by homes in groups of six, each with their own woods and gardens, with community swimming pools and schools, all connected by an elaborate network of pathways. In a genre noted for obsessive attention to planning and mechanical detail (we are reminded, certainly, of the phalansteries of Fourier), La Ciudad Anarquista stands out as a particularly detailed and imaginative exemplar. A scarce work, especially in North America. Noted in Molina-Gavilán's (et al) "Chronology of Latin American Science Fiction 1775-2005" (in Science Fiction Studies, v.34 no. 3, Nov. 2007); but not in Sargent or Negley; not noted (nor is any work by Falconnet) in Paul Nursey-Bray's Anarchist Thinkers and Thought: an Annotated Bibliography (1992). OCLC notes only four physical holdings in North America and four more worldwide (likely overlooking a number of South American institutions, however).

Description
Edinburgh: Printed for Arch[ibal]d Constable & Co.; London: Hurst, Robinson & Co, 1821. FIRST EDITION. 192 x 103 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2"). xv, [1], lvii, [1], 59-360 pp. ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S PAPER BOARDS, paper label on spine, edges untrimmed. Owner's signature of Robert Chichester, dated 1827, on front pastedown. Text a shade less than bright because of inferior paper stock, slight wear to the binding, but AS FINE A COPY IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS AS ONE COULD HOPE TO FIND, the covers amazingly clean and smooth, and with only the most minor faults internally. In its original remarkably well-preserved publisher's boards, this work on education captures the spirit of reform abundant in the early 19th century, including its warts. Although Spurzheim (1776-1832) was better known as an exponent of phrenology and an authority on mental illness than as an educational theorist, his "View of the Elementary Principles of Education" is an important work that, for the most part, is sensible and progressive. Especially significant are his assertion that all influences from birth onward contribute to the physical and mental development of the child, and the inference he draws from this that, in addition to the conventional education of the intellect, an optimal upbringing must include attention to such things as clean air, proper diet, and suitable exercise. He favors public education over private instruction because children will benefit by meeting a variety of people with "different manners of feeling and thinking." Spurzheim shows himself to be generally tolerant and forward thinking, as he maintains that good education can improve almost anybody (it would certainly reduce the number of criminals). But he sometimes disappoints, as in his belief that many limitations are hereditary and must be taken into account in designing the most fitting education for an individual. He states, for example, that the poor ought to be prevented from reproducing, as if poverty were in the genes. And, in answering the claims of Mary Wollstonecraft's "Vindication of the Rights of Women," he says, "I cannot perceive any arrangement of nature that can lead me to expect that women will cease to be considered as subordinate to men. Let them endeavor, if they please, to acquire the same degree of talent, but till they have acquired it, let them cherish order and exercise the virtues of their actual condition in society, rather than attempt to rise into a sphere for which they are not at present fitted." Also appended here is a section on the treatment and reform of criminals, in which the author calls for a better understanding of the causes of crime, for the requiring of prisoners to undertake useful work and courses of instruction while in prison, and for the study of the prison system instituted by William Penn at Philadelphia. While the sometimes disheartening contents approach a certain fascination, it's the binding here that competes for--and perhaps wins--our attention. That its fragile construction could hold up so beautifully through two centuries of use is extraordinary..

Description
[Various locations, 1955. Very good.. [9] leaves, illustrated with twenty-nine photographs, various sizes between 3 x 2 inches and 9.5 x 7.5 inches, with a manuscript index at front identifying the subjects. Later blue-green limp vinyl album with self adhesive pages. Minor wear and soiling. Photographs in generally nice condition. An interesting family photograph album assembled by a later-20th-century descendant of an African-American family with ties to Howard University, Alcorn College, and the West Coast. The photographs are mostly studio portraits of various kinds (sepia-toned, black-and-white, hand-tinted) featuring distinguished African-American men, women, and children. The photographs are arranged in number order and keyed to a handwritten list at the front of the album, identifying each subject and occasionally including brief additional information about some of them. Most of the photographs also have a date written near them on each album page. The photographs seem to center on two woman (probably sisters) named Olga Williams Roby and Alma Williams Greene; the album includes two photos of Olga and multiple images of Alma, and there are photographs inscribed to each of the women here. Olga apparently lived on the West Coast, as the earlier of her two photographs is noted in California and the later in Seattle in 1940. One of Alma's photographs features her while at Alcorn College. There are also multiple images of Dr. Clifton Nelson (one at Howard University). Four of the photographs are noted as emanating from the various subjects' time at Alcorn College (now Alcorn State University) in Mississippi. This, combined with a final page of photographs featuring family friends, one of which pictures a house in Greenwood, Mississippi, indicates the larger family probably emanated from Mississippi. The fact that several of the subjects attended college, combined with Olga's life on the West Coast, indicates at least part of this family participated in the Great Migration.
