By Sir Jonas Moore, Knt. late surveyor general of his Majesty's Ord'nance. The Second Edition, with any large Additions. London: Printed for Robert Harford, 1681. [With separate title-page but continuous collation]: A Table Of Artificial Sines And Tangents, For Every Degree And Minute Of The Quadrant, Fitted To The Size Of The Logarithms. London: Printed for Robert Harford, 1679. Second and much expanded edition. Two parts in one twelvemo volume (5 x 2 7/8 inches; 125 x 73 mm). 24, 120, [178], [2, advertisements] pp. With one engraved folding plate (often lacking) and six engraved plates in the text, two of which are tipped in and folding. With numerous tables labeled "Brigg's Logarithms." With final advertisement leaf. First title-page in double-ruled border. The folding plates are as such, folding engraved perpetual calendar mounted on A1r; folding scale mounted on F5v; folding engraved plate of latitude calculations bound after page 120. This second edition with "many large additions" has nearly 100 pages more than the first edition. Full contemporary mottled calf, rebacked to style. Boards double-ruled in blind. Edges speckled red. Spine lettered in gilt. Corners slightly bumped. Final advertisement leaf trimmed a bit close on fore-edge. Overall a very good, clean copy. Regarding the first edition, "his notes were edited by his Ordnance second clerk, Nicholas Stephenson, to form a pocket-book, Mathematical Compendium (1674)." (DNB) "Handbook of applied mathematics first published in 1674, including instructions for using the elementary mechanical calculating device known as "Napier's Bones," a distant forerunner of the computer, developed in the early 1600s by John Napier, the inventor of logarithms." (Swann Galleries) "Sir Jonas Moore (1617-1679) was a practical mathematician, teacher, and author who, when unable to make a living as a tutor and professor of mathematics, rose to prominence in the Restoration court of Charles II, after demonstrating his value as a surveyor and cartographer. On being appointed to the high office of Surveyor General of the King's Ordnance, he used both his income and his influence with the King to become a patron of navigational astronomy. An able mathematician (he is best known for his work in trigonometry and the development of the 'cos.' in mathematical equations), his enduring importance derives from his strong support of mathematics and astronomy which made many other mathematical and astronomical advances possible." Description
23/06/1928. “I do not choose to run” was a statement made by President Calvin Coolidge to the press on August 2, 1927, on his decision not to seek reelection in the 1928 presidential election. Upon Coolidge's announcement, the gathered media were stunned. The public, too, were shocked by the announcement. Many felt Coolidge could easily win a second full term, based on ""Coolidge Prosperity"", the booming economy, and a surplus of over $300 million. But Coolidge stuck to his position and in 1928 Herbert Hoover was nominated in his place. Coolidge’s refusal to run is famous and his statement announcing this is part of history. But, surprisingly, it seems that Coolidge was giving no thought to what to do when he left the White House. Typed letter signed, on White House letterhead, Washington, June 23, 1928, to Herbert Pulitzer, son of media magnate Joseph Pulitzer, saying he has not yet determined what to do after he leaves office. “Thank you very much for your letter of June 19th. I have read it with interest and appreciation. I have not, however, given any consideration to what I shall do after the end of my administration and just now have nothing in mind. I am pleased to hear from you. Mrs. Coolidge recall very agreeably your visit to the White House and shall always be glad to see you.”This is the only Coolidge letter we can recall about his departure from office.

Description
Firenze: Barbera, 1876. FIRST EDITION. With 1 full-page plate. Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards; an excellent copy from the library of the Mount Wilson Observatory with the presentation bookplate to the Library from Adriaan van Maanen. First edition, though a portion appeared in a journal a few years earlier. Ferrero (1839-1902) was director of the Italian Geographical Institute and a president of the Italian Geodetic Commission. His work here deals with the presentation of the method of least squares as it applies to geodesy. Least squares method is a form of mathematical regression analysis used to determine the line of best fit for a set of data, providing a visual demonstration of the relationship between the data points. Each point of data represents the relationship between a known independent variable and an unknown dependent variable. Here the author presents his applications of least squares method to geodesy, especially important (as set forth in the explanations provided). “The treatise of Colonel Ferrero may be recommended to those desirous of having a thorough practical acquaintance with the method, as decidedly the best and clearest on the subject” (Peirce, American Journal of Mathematics, Vol.1, No.1, p.59-63, 1878). Adriaan van Maanen (1884-1946) was a Dutch astronomer who spent time working with George Hale at the Mount Wilson Observatory, part of the Carnegie Institution.

Description
NY: Viking, 1967. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. A series of letters from American actor William Redfield (1927 - 1976) to his friend, Robert Mills, between January and August of 1964 which chronicle the rehearsals and performances of Hamlet, a production conceived and directed by Sir John Gielgud as a modern-dress "rehearsal" of the play. Hamlet was played by Richard Burton; during rehearsals in Toronto he and Elizabeth Taylor were married for the first time. Redfield, cast as Guildenstern, witnesses the enormous difficulty of both acting in and directing Hamlet while also trying to manage celebrity and notoriety. This is the partly the source material for the successful London play "The Motive and The Cue" by Jack Thorne. Directed by Sam Mendes, "The Motive and The Cue" premiered at the National Theatre in London in April 2023 and prompted the republication of this book, with a forward by Mendes. This copy is the uncommon first edition, more uncommon inscribed by Redfield on the ffe: "19 Feb '67 Dear Frank - after all our years of chit-chat and discussion, I finally set some of it down - Bill" Solid, clean copy in dustjacket with some incidental edgewear.
