Description
1975. MIRO, Joan. Càntic del Sol. By Saint Francis of Assisi, translated into Spanish by Josep Carner, with a prologue by Marià Manent. 44 ff. With 35 etchings with aquatint, printed in colour, all after original designs by Joan Miró. Oblong folio, 367 x 516 mm, loose as issued in original yellow cloth chemise and slipcase bearing red embossed signature of Miró. Barcelona: Editorial Gustau Gili, 1975. "In 1975, Gustau Gili in Barcelona published Càntic del sol, a collection of writings by St. Francis of Assisi selected and introduced by the poet Marià Manent and illustrated with thirty-three etchings and aquatints by Miró. On this occasion, the texts referred to concepts that were identical to some of Miró's current themes: the moon, the sun, the stars, etc. These elements constitute a number of compositions on their own, whilst in others they spring from a gesture, a line, in response to more intangible concepts such as wind and rain" (Rosa Maria Malet, preface to Joan Miró: The Illustrated Books). Only edition, limited to 273 copies, all signed by Miró in pencil on the colophon, of this mystical and intense work by Miró, illustrated with bold and vibrant colours heightened with aquatint. The box is very slightly soiled, but the book is immaculate. Cramer, Joan Miró: The Illustrated Books No. 196.

Description
34 letters, 76 manuscript pages, in very good, clean and legible condition. Thomas Connolly (London, April 9, 1783 – October 31, 1825) son of notorious Tory Colonel – Doctor John Connolly (Lancaster, Pennsylvania 1742-43 – Montreal 1813), who was caught up in Dunmore's War, (1774) caused by encroachments by frontiersmen on Native Americans of Ohio and the tensions and rivalry between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Virginia over the site of Pittsburgh. Early in 1774 Col. John Connolly, agent of Lord Dunmore, royal Governor of Virginia, took possession of Fort Pitt, and renamed it Fort Dunmore and attempted retaliation for Indian attacks. He also interfered with the colony's fur trade. Connolly late in the 18th century would cause further alarm in western Pennsylvania. Col. Connolly spent most of the Revolutionary War in prison. He published a memoir of his incarceration in London in 1783, titled A Narrative of the Transactions, Imprisonment, and Sufferings of John Connolly, an American Loyalist. (see Howes C-691). See: Franklin, W. Neil, Pennsylvania-Virginia Rivalry for the Indian Trade of the Ohio Valley The Mississippi Valley Historical Review, Vol. 20, No. 4 (Mar. 1934), pp. 463-480 https://www.jstor.org/stab;e/1897186 Thomas Connolly's sister, Rebecca, married Edward Evans of Philadelphia. Thomas Connolly encouraged and corresponded with his nephew John W. Connolly Evans. Attorney Samuel Mifflin was Conolly's half-brother. Most of the letters concern substantial lands the Col. John Connolly claimed belonged to him in Kentucky, New York, Canada and elsewhere. Thomas inherited these lands, but like his father was caught up in litigation over them, he was represented by Samuel Mifflin. In an article entitled "Col. John Connolly, Loyalist" (Journal of the Lancaster County Historical Society, 1902-03), F. R. Diffenderner writes: "Of his family very little appears to be known. He alludes neither to his wife nor his children in his narrative. But I have ascertained that he was twice married. His first wife, a Miss Sample, was the daughter of an innkeeper, living at or near Fort Pitt. His second wife was the widow of Samuel Wellington of Delaware. One son, James Connolly, was born on April 1, 1781, while he was a prisoner in Philadelphia, and another, Thomas Connolly was born April 9, 1783, during his stay in London." 2750.00

Description
North Powder, Oregon: North Powder High School, 1942. Good. 10½” x 8”. Two-hole punched leaves, plastic brad-bound within thin orange folder. Pp. [48]. Good: front cover and first page(s) lacking; rear cover detached but present; offsetting and edge wear to first present page with a small patch worn away; several photographs loose or detached but present in original locations; a bit spotted throughout. This is a rare yearbook for a small high school in Oregon, issued during World War II and featuring two dozen original photographs tipped in. Internal evidence proved that this book covered the 1942 graduates of North Powder High School, located in the small town in Oregon of the same name. The first present page, graced with a rendition of the Seal of the United States, with the eagle perched atop a “V” for Victory, shared that it was dedicated to “the young men of our community now serving with the armed forces.” Another page listed the 26 “boys in service who have graduated from N.P.H.S.” The volume contains fairly standard yearbook fare, made special with the inclusion of 24 original photographs. Images revealed the “Board of Education which has so ably directed our school system” as well as the student-led “Executive Board,” composed of six young women and three young men. The faculty photo displayed six female teachers, a male principal and janitor, and there were individual head shots for the 15 graduating seniors, along with listings of their clubs and activities. Group shots of the underclassmen showed the eightstudent junior class (seven of whom were girls) and six freshmen, each with their one teacher, as well as the sophomore class, “the largest class in high-school, having an enrollment of 22.” Other images revealed the nine young women who played volleyball, basketball and baseball (though “they were defeated every time . . . the girls proved their valour”) and the school's orchestra: “It was the largest orchestra in many years. Musical numbers were presented at plays and Parent Teachers Association meeting[s] throughout the year.” An unrecorded, charming wartime annual for a small Oregon school. Not found in OCLC.
