Description
London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1806. Second edition. With 8 plates, including the hand-colored frontispiece, 4 additional hand-colored aquatints, plus 3 black and white plates (2 double page). Half morocco with marbled boards, chipped and faded along the edge, corners bumped and showing some loss, hinges weak; very faint damp stain along the outer edge of the text block, light scattered foxing. From the John Crear Library in Chicago, with its perforated stamp on the title, ink stamps on the verso of many of the plates and preliminary pages, and bookplate on the paste-down. . Second edition. Sir John Barrow took part in the British embassy to China in 1792-94 as secretary to Lord Macartney. Although its mission to open trade with China was ultimately unsuccessful, the embassy was able to gain valuable first-hand knowledge of the country and its people. The official account of the mission was undertaken Sir George Staunton (who used many of Barrow’s observations) in 1797, but Barrow was still considered something of an expert in Chinese affairs and wrote many articles on the subject for the Quarterly Review in addition to publishing his own account of the embassy in 1804. The author also clearly took the time to study the Chinese language while abroad, and this work includes his valuable observations on the topic, as well as many examples of Chinese characters. According to Hill, this book is “one of the best illustrated English travels on China . . . Barrow was an excellent observer, and the text contains a number of descriptions of Chinese artifacts and novelties. Among these a plate of musical instruments, extensive renditions of Chinese melodies in western notation, and a long description, with illustration, of the abacus.” Other chapters include passages on literature, medicine and science, social customs, government, and a sketch of the character and private life of the Emperor, whose portrait graces the frontispiece. Barrow (1764-1848) came from humble beginnings and rose to the rank of baronet in 1835. Best known for his own book about the mutiny on His Majesty’s ship Bounty (1831), Barrow was also an avid proponent of polar exploration and had several geographical features named in his honor, including the Barrow Strait. He was also active in the government of Cape Colony (now part of South Africa) during British occupation before the Treaty of Amiens, where he acted as a diplomat and explored the then little-known region.

Description
S. l. : By the author. Very good. Large notebook, n. d. (first half of the 20th century); 9 3/4 x 8; pebbled, black cloth over boards and 3/4 red leatherette, ruled in gilt; pp. 1-302 - about 1/2 of them filled in manuscript and some newspaper clippings; illustrated with numerous watercolor drawings and an engraved family bookplate; a bit of wear to edges of boards; several leaves with excised sections (corrections [?]); in very good condition. A detailed, multi-branch history and genealogy of the Greenoughs of Massachusetts, with stunning watercolor illustrations, it was compiled by an anonymous member of the family in the early 20th century. The history of the Greenough family went back to the Anglo-Saxon culture of England, with the first official record of the surname dating to the 1200s. The first immigrant to the United States was Captain William Greenough (1640 - 1693), who arrived in Boston about 1650 and would ultimately establish one of the earliest and biggest shipyards in the city. He would become a Freeman of Boston and founder and deacon of the New Brick Church. His wife Ruth Swift was the daughter of William Swift - one of the very first settlers of Dorchester, Massachusetts. Thus a long line of distinguished Greenoughs would be established through the centuries, many leaving their mark on the political, business, and cultural history of the United States. Some of them included William's grandson - Thomas Greenough (1710 - 1785) - the most prolific and productive maker of mathematical instruments, more specifically marine and surveying compasses and backstaffs, in Boston in the 18th century; William Whitwell Greenough (1818 - 1899) - merchant and President of the Boston Public Library from 1868 until 1888; Horation Greenough (1805 - 1852) - sculptor and creator of the Enthroned Washington (1840) and The Rescue (1837 - 1850); Horatio Saltonstall Greenough (1845 - 1916) inventor of the Greenough stereomicroscope; and others.

Description
Köln: Buchhandlung Walther König, 2017. Fine copies in plain black wrappers, with glossy illustrated jackets.. First Edition. Octavo. Two volumes, each published to accompany the exhibitions "Wade Guyton: Das New Yorker Atelier" at Museum Brandhorst in Munich (Jan. 28 - Apr. 30, 2017) and "Das New Yorker Atelier, Abridged" at London's Serpentine Gallery (Sep. 29, 2017 - Feb. 4, 2018). Produced in the same style as Guyton's earlier trilogy of artist's catalogues (Zeichnungen für ein großes Bild / kleines Zimmer / lange Bilder, 2010-2013), with Guyton shooting piles of his exhibited "drawings" (i.e. overprinted pages that he tore from art history books) against the glossy kitchen floor of his studio—which, in this iteration, has been painted black (in contrast to the blue, red, and yellow paint of the previous pseudo-flipbooks).
