Description
London: F. S. Ellis, 1871. FIRST EDITION. 190 x 130 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 1/8"). viii, 287 pp. VERY PRETTY HONEY-BROWN MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, BY ZAEHNSDORF (stamp-signed on front turn-in and with gilt exhibition stamp on rear pastedown), covers with plain gilt rules framing a central panel semé with intricate urn tools trailing leafy vines alternating with heart-shaped compartments formed by vines containing a bird in flight, raised bands, spine compartments alternating bird or urn tool, gilt titling, turn-ins with repeating lovebird or olive branch tools, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of Leonard Noble dated 1893. Spine slightly and evenly sunned, a couple of pages with small marginal stain, other trivial imperfections, but A VERY ATTRACTIVE COPY--clean and fresh internally with ample margins, and the binding bright with gilt and showing few signs of wear. In a lovely binding, this is the first appearance of a collection of poems that marked a significant change in tone for Swinburne, from personal confession to political awareness and what DNB terms "a humanist positivism." Swinburne (1837-1909) was a virtuoso of verse, able to produce dazzling and enthralling lines in a wide range of meters and stanzaic forms. He was also a shocking pagan in terms of the content of his poetry, a significant portion of which was erotic. This work, a collection of poems calling for the overthrow of political and ideological despotism of all sorts, contains, in DNB's opinion, "at least two of Swinburne's best poems, 'Hertha' and 'Before a Crucifix,' as well as the rhetorically impressive 'Hymn of Man.'" It was inspired by the struggle of Swinburne's hero, Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-72), an Italian politician, activist, journalist, and staunch republican proponent of a unified Italy. Our binding is a fine example of the work of the Zaehnsdorf firm, long a top-ranked English bindery. Born in Pest, Hungary, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-86) served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart, worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman, and then settled in London, where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at age 33, when the senior Joseph died, and the firm flourished under the son's leadership, becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years, Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders, including the Frenchman Louis Genth (who was chief finisher from 1859-84), and trained a number of others, including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947, the Zaehnsdorf bindery continued to produce consistently attractive and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. It is generally felt that the firm reserved the use of its oval stamp showing a binder at work (seen here) for their finest bindings, including those entered in exhibitions..

HARRY S. TRUMAN (1884-1972). Truman was the Thirty-Third President. DS. 1pg. 16 x 12 . December 21, 1950. Washington. A document signed Harry S Truman as President and co-signed Maurice J. Tobin as Secretary of Labor. Truman appointed Robert T. Creasey the Assistant Secretary of Labor. Creasey later became the executive director of the Professional Golfers Association. The Truman signature is bit light and there is some skipping, although the Tobin is dark and there is a bright gold seal. The entire document is neatly glued down to a board and there is light toning around the margins, perhaps from a previous framing. The condition is good to very good.

Description
ADS. 2pg. 4 x 7 . June 28 1808. No place. An autograph document signed Charles W A Morton to Mr. Biggs: As Mr. Biggs has declined to act any longer in the capacity of second, Mr. Morton wishes to know, if Mr. Thompson has come to a definitive resolution upon the subject. Saturday was the day appointed for the encounter, and Mr. M is certainly entitled to the intermediate time for the purpose of providing his second, especially since the arrangements necessary to be made by a person acting in that relation, may be completed in a few hours. Mr. M. has been involved in a disagreeable predicament by the defection of him, who had originally undertaken his cause, and has hitherto been unsuccessful under the circumstances. Mr. M. relying on the honor and ability of Mr. B is willing, that he should act as the common friend on the occasion, and he conceived that his opponent cannot occur any possible disadvantage in consequence of the measure, and that his reputation requires an acquiescence in the proposal. If Mr. B absolutely declines, he is still ready to go out alone with Mr. T in the last resort, in pursuance of preliminary arrangements, written and agreed to between the parties. Charles W A Morton. The letter is in very fine condition with dark writing.

Description
N.P.: Department of the Army Directorate, United States Dependents Schools, European Area, 1974. 10¼" x 7¾". Stapled printed thin card wrappers. Pp. [2], 34. Very good: all leaves three-hole punched, possibly as issued, corner crease and light stains to front wrapper. This is a book focused on Jewish American history and culture. It was designed to help educators who taught the children of members of the United States military who were living overseas. Please see item 3, above, for background on the United States Dependents Schools, European Area (USDESEA). The book opens with a letter from the USDESEA Deputy Director, explaining the goal of helping educators "become more aware of the diverse cultural backgrounds of America's minorities, more sensitive to the problems each group has faced, and more actively involved in America's efforts to solve cultural problems." It features background information on the history of the Jewish people, including contributions to Columbus' famous voyage to America as well as the expulsion of Jews from Spain which occurred that same year. It has a small map illustrating early mentions of Jews in the American colonies, along with information and illustrations on later migrations of Jews from Germany and Eastern Europe, as well as the rise of Zionism and antisemitism in the United States. The abolitionist role played by Jewish Americans in the Civil War era was also discussed. The book also includes a chronology of Jewish history, information on Jewish holidays and festivals, and a bibliography. A rare book documenting the employment of multicultural education for United States military dependents overseas and focused on Jewish American history. OCLC locates no copies.

Description
London: Peter Davies. Near Fine in Very Good- dj. 1961. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . (price-clipped) [very light foxing to top edge, otherwise a nice fresh copy with no significant wear; jacket has one tiny chip at top of front panel, also torn with a bit of paper loss at top rear hinge and bottom front hinge, one additional small closed tear at top of rear panel, minor edgewear elsewhere]. Early novel by Burgess, the first of two published under this pseudonym. Satirical novel about a young married couple, "the husband having a sort of brain good an winning quizzes, so he wins The Big Money on a TV quiz and then puts the money on horses and he becomes a rich man. And so then they have the best of everything, like a mink for her and staying at posh hotels [etc.] .... but there's always been something niggling in him all the about the world being a rotten place and not even money can buy anything to make the world a less rotten place and so he suggests that they do themselves in." Burgess supposedly limited the novel's vocabulary to just 800 words, part of his message about the dumbing-down of modern media culture -- but he made up for this atypical restraint with "A Clockwork Orange," published the following year. It was reported well over a decade ago that Francis Coppola had acquired the movie rights, but that would seem to have gone into deep turnaround. .

Karl Baedeker (1801-1959) was born in Essen, and attended Heidelberg University. His family was involved in the publishing and bookselling business, and around 1828 he entered the travel guide business. Baedeker created a different kind of travel book that opened up tourism for a new class of travelers, by guiding the tourist to the principal attractions in a country or area. This information was often edited by Baedeker himself, and sons would take over and expand the business after his death. This edition provides considerable information on the Rhine, from Rotterdam to Constance. ODB.
