Description
Fort Worth: Texas Printing Company, 1906. First Edition. 8vo, publisher’s blue cloth, 101 pp. Very Good. A scarce memoir chronicling the early days of Fort Worth. Terrell made two trips out west, the first to California. On his second trip he decided to settle and practice law in Fort Worth in the early 1850s. According to Terrell, the free land in the town attracted “a superior class of settlers… it was not unusual to meet higher culture in a cabin and to see pianos on dirt floors.” An entertaining and scarce frontier memoir. Some rubbing to cloth, faint marginal dampstaining to a section of pages, small mark of insect damage to outer edge of pages, very good minus condition overall. Howes T-105.

Description
Paris: Heugel & Cie. [PN. H. et Cie. 19,659], 1915. Large octavo. Quarter mid-tan calf with marbled boards, spine in decorative compartments gilt, titling gilt, marbled endpapers. 1f. (recto dedication to Carré, verso blank), 1f. (recto title printed within red-ruled border, verso publisher's note), [i] (named cast list), [ii] (contents), [i] (blank), 410 pp. Binding worn, rubbed, and bumped; spine torn and mostly lacking; boards and free front endpaper detached. Edges slightly browned; small publisher's handstamp to first several leaves. A revised edition of Charpentier's best-known opera. In four acts to a libretto by the composer or by Saint-Pol-Roux, Louise was first performed in Paris at the Opéra-Comique (Salle Favart) on 2 February 1900, under Albert Carré. Considered to be his most recognized work, "Louise is a supreme example of Charpentier's ability to suit contemporary Parisian taste." Robert Orledge in Grove Music Online. "Even before the première, the work had become something of a cause célèbre: rumours circulated about the immorality of the subject matter as well as about the revolutionary nature of the score. In fact it is far from unconventional, owing much to Gounod and Massenet; and Massenet admired it. There are, however, moments of originality ... The work's allegiance to the realist cause, its rich orchestral palette - which includes instruments as different as the viola d'amore ... and the sewing-machine (foreshadowing the use of everyday 'instruments' such as the typewriter in Satie's Parade) - and the memorability of the set-piece 'Depuis le jour' have assured it a unique place in the repertory." Richard Langham Smith in Grove Music Online.

Description
New York/London: Charles Scribner's Sons. Fair. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [ex-library book (pocket on front pastedown, library stamps on title page and top and bottom edges of text block), spine and front cover faded (gilt lettering too), shadows of removed labels on spine, small stain at top edge of rear cover]. The literary and cultural critic's observations of the American scene from the early days of the Great Depression. "This book is made up almost entirely of straight reporting of actual happenings. The exceptions are the Red Cross worker, who is a composite type and partly invented; the people at the Indian dance, who are largely invented and pure caricature; and the Fourth of July celebration at Carlsbad, of which the author knows only by hearsay. In some cases, for obvious reasons, I have changed names of persons and places. The chapters cover about a year between October, 1930, and October, 1931; and the present tense of the text is not that of the time of publication of the book but in each case that of the incidents dealt with." Lots of really interesting material here. Chapter XVII, "The Freight-Car Case," discusses the Scottsboro Boys. Chapter XXII, "The City of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels," is mostly about two notable Los Angeles religious figures: the Rev. Robert Shuler and his "former lieutenant and present rival," Dr. Gustav A. Briegleb. Chapter XXIII, "Eisenstein in Hollywood," is about the great Russian film director's passage through the cinema capital on his way to Mexico to film his ill-fated documentary. .
