Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness is a ground-breaking novel featuring lesbian relationships and gender nonconformity, which argues that homosexuality (called sexual inversion in the book) is natural and that queer people deserve the right to live openly and happily with their chosen partners. The novel follows Stephen Gordon's life from living in Paris to serving in the ambulance corps during WWI; a journey of self-exploration and a tragic quest for love. Hall engages with both Christianity and developments in Sexology throughout the text to support her argument for equality. Although controversial at its publication (legal hurdles and banning because of its purported "obscene" content), the novel has long been valued for its pioneering portrayal of queer people. Yet, in the decades since its publication, Radclyffe Hall's prose and narrative choices have been critiqued, especially for perpetuating many of the boundaries it could have pushed against. Second edition, revised and enlarged by the addition of new material expanding it by 80 pages from the first printing in 1742. “A curious and rare book, according to which human life could be prolonged beyond normal limits, by a sort of elegant vampirism which combines with the most scientific conclusions. Hermeticism occupies a large place in this work which also contains astonishing revelations on Nicolas Flamel who, according to the author, was still alive in his time” (Caillet), as well as other Hermetic philosophers such as Basil Valentine, Thomas Vaughan, Raymond Lulle and Artephius. Cohausen maintained he possessed the formula for prolonging old age through at least 115 years. “Cohausen admitted at the end of the Hermippus that he wrote it in a humorous vein for his own enjoyment (and probably in hope of book sales), but he also knew that recently accepted medical beliefs and applications formed the basis of his work, which made his satire all the more effective. Cohausen simply modified the traditional literary conceit of satirizing the search for the philosophers’ stone with a humorous treatment of more current iatrochymical analyses of respiration and longevity, taking these ideas to outrageous conclusions. Ironically, because of Cohausen’s skilfulness in presenting medical concepts in the Hermippus, further analysis of the intellectual context of his ironic treatise also aids our understanding of early modern theories of longevity and iatrochymistry” (Roos). This was Cohausen’s best-known work, a translation of Exercitatio physico-medica curiosa de methodo rara ad CXV annos prorogandae senectutis (1742). Cohausen (1665-1750) was a noted medical jester (in other words a writer of satirical medical material) and physician to the Bishop of Muenster. From dust jacket: The setting for this novel is the future, the immediate future. The main characters are three native American birds -- an eagle, a falcon, and an osprey. These species have not yet vanished from our environment, but unless there are drastic changes in man’s activities, their extinction cannot be far off. Mr. Bancroft tells the individual stories of each of the birds. Their feeding habits and migratory patterns and mating procedures provide fascinating background, but the focus is on the constant battle for survival as the poisons of insecticides creep higher and higher up the food chain. The story is a compelling one, but it is not always pleasant. The reader is able to see how the killing of aphids in a small cornfield by DDT can affect birds and animals hundreds of miles away. The cyclical effect of poisons causing slightly impaired agility in the birds which leads to the seeking of defective prey which in turn leads to further buildup of poisons in their systems is portrayed in a dramatic and enlightening manner. The impact exceeds that of the most alarming scientific treatise on the subject of vanishing species.
