Description
1970. Spiral bound. Very Good +. Ludwig & George Wronkow. (4) remarkable handmade artist's books by German-Jewish brothers Ludwig and George Wronkow, who emigrated to America ( to New York) in 1938 and 1941 respectively. The books resemble spiral-bound notebooks and each is filled with highly-skilled, obsessive drawings, watercolors and collages centered around hats. The 4 artist's books here offered include: 1) Viel Lärm um alte Hüte ("Much Ado about Old Hats"), 1970. Approximately 12" x 9", spiral bound, 24 pp (some sides blank) of colored drawings and collage featuring folded, torn, cut and decorated NY Transit Authority tickets and transfers, with funny, handwritten rhyming texts in Gerrman. One of dozens of homemade books, all on the theme of HATS, that the two brothers exchanged with each other as gifts (and perhaps gave to others). This particular book was written and illustrated by Ludwig Wronklow (1900-1982), the older of the two brothers. Both were raised in Berlin and became journalists. The younger brother, George (1905-1989) worked as a journalist and art editor at the leftist Mosse-Verlag, and for Weltspiegel and the Berliner Tageblatt. He fled Germany for France in 1933 and after the German occupation, managed to escape via Spain and came to New York in 1941, where he worked for CBS and a number of German-language journals and papers, becoming a citizen in 1949. His older brother Ludwig (1900-1982) was more of an artist, caricaturist and cartoonist, and published thousands of his drawings in German journals and newspapers before 1933. He managed to flee Germany and arrived in America in 1938 where he took a job with the German emigrant paper Aufbau, eventually becoming one of its top directors. In Germany he was friendly with the Dadaists and even contributed cover drawings to a few of their books; 2) Das Grosse Deutsche Alphabet von A-Z unter besonderer berucksichtigung der verschiedensten Kopfbeduckungen ("The Big German Alphabet from A-Z with special consideration of headwear'), 1957. 11.5" x 8.75", within it a mounted hand-made chapbook measuring 5" x 3.75", with 26 hand-drawn and colored alphabet pages with short typed German couplets. Some of the original cloth-tape covering to spine is missing at larger pages, else very good. This one was written and illustrated by George Wronkow; 3) Der Unhut, Das Buch Wider den Hut ("The Unhat, the book against the hat"), 1969. Approximately 12 x 9, spiral bound, 24 pp (some sides blank) of colored drawings and collage, funny handwritten verses, some by Wronkow and some by more famous German authors. This one is by Ludwig Wronkow; 4) Das Buch Der Hüte ("The Book of the Hat"), 1962. Approximately 12 x 9, spiral bound, 24 pp (some sides blank) of colored drawings and collage, on the subject of hats and Man-HAT-tan, with subway maps fashioned as hats, etc. Delightful and whimsical. This one is also by Ludwig. An exceptional crop of hat-themed artist's books by the German-American Wronkow brothers, about whom a biography should one day emerge.

Description
1960. Gender nonconforming and drag performance photo archive documenting queer social gatherings, costume performance, camp pageantry, and private queer community life from the 1960s through the 1990s. The photographs preserve a period when drag culture existed simultaneously in nightlife, informal house parties, outdoor gatherings, and small community events, often outside mainstream visibility. Long before drag became widely commercialized through television and corporate entertainment circuits, queer performers and gender nonconforming individuals built their own social spaces through costume, parody, theatricality, and communal celebration. Photo archive of 22 color and silver gelatin photographs, ranging from small vernacular snapshots to larger prints, United States, circa 1960s-1990s. Several images center on a recurring bridal drag performer wearing lace wedding dresses, veils, floral bouquets, wigs, and exaggerated makeup while posing beside guests in tuxedos, theatrical costumes, and evening attire. Other photographs depict individuals in burlesque-inspired outfits, feather boas, crop tops, wigs, and handmade dresses posed indoors and outdoors at parties, picnics, and performance-like gatherings. One outdoor scene shows two figures in matching feminine costumes smiling arm in arm, while additional images record staged poses beside vehicles, improvised dance or performance gestures, and casual snapshots emphasizing humor, glamour, and gender transformation. The archive repeatedly shifts between formal costume display and relaxed social interaction, grounding drag not only as stage entertainment but as an everyday form of queer expression and community-making. The photographs align with broader developments in post-Stonewall queer culture, when drag performance expanded from underground bars and private parties into increasingly visible forms of social and artistic expression. During much of this period, openly gender nonconforming presentation still carried substantial social and legal risk, especially outside major urban nightlife districts. This archive preserves the social fabric surrounding drag culture through intimate portrayals of friendships, amateur performance, humor, costume experimentation, and private community environments that sustained queer life across several decades. Light handling wear, scattered creasing, and occasional fading consistent with vernacular snapshot use. Overall in good condition.

Description
1920. Unknown photographer, postrevolutionary Mexico daily life photo archive, 1922, documents rural and regional scenes in Mexico shortly after the Revolution and supports research into Indigenous representation, campesino life, foreign travel photography, gendered domestic labor, and the visual culture of postrevolutionary nationhood. The Mexican Revolution, usually dated from 1910 to 1920, reshaped political authority, rural land claims, and national identity, while the 1920s saw continued struggles over agrarian reform and the place of peasants and Indigenous communities in the modern Mexican state. These photographs capture lived experience rather than official political change: women carry ceramic vessels, children appear in traditional dress, men stand beside carts and mules, and rural landscapes and town settings locate the viewer within a Mexico still marked by regional movement, village commerce, and postwar social reconstruction. Fourteen vintage silver gelatin prints, dated October 25, 1922, with some typed captions on rectos or versos and one handwritten inscription; locations or references include San Luis Potosí, including Micos and Valles, Durango, and a handwritten notation reading "Alb. Jaramillo / Tenango." The images include a young girl in traditional dress carrying a baby while holding a clay vessel, an Indigenous woman posed with a large ceramic jar, male campesinos in wide-brimmed sombreros and charro-style clothing, men beside carts, figures riding mules, and vendors or local residents in village plazas. One view shows a church façade identified as "Durango," while a waterfall is captioned "Salto de agua, Micos, S.L.P. / 15-3-22." Another caption reads "Palma tomado desde el tren. Valles / S.L.P.," placing at least part of the travel itinerary along a rail route through San Luis Potosí. The German caption "Eine kleine Indianerin (Arnolds zweite Liebe, ist sie nicht bildschön?)," translated as "A little Indian girl (Arnold's second love, isn't she beautiful?)," indicates annotation by a German-speaking traveler or compiler and gives the archive additional value as evidence of foreign viewing practices and ethnographic language applied to Indigenous subjects in early twentieth-century Mexico. Photographs measure approximately 2½ x 3 inches. The group includes rural portraits, transportation views, marketplace or village scenes, architectural documentation, and landscape images, with captions in Spanish and German providing unusually useful geographic and interpretive evidence. Light edge wear, small handling creases, and adhesive remnants from former album mounting, very good overall. Focused visual record of postrevolutionary Mexico through a foreign-language travel lens, especially notable for its dated images of Indigenous women and children, campesino dress, ceramic vessels, mule and cart transport, and regional travel across San Luis Potosí, Durango, and related locales.

Description
London: John Stockdale, 1811. Third Edition. Both volumes contain a frontispiece and list of plates; vol 1 has 28 illustrations (including frontispiece) and vol 2 16 illustrations (including frontispiece). Vol 1 with corner repair on frontispiece, some spotting, marbled boards with repaired spine; vol 2 some spotting on title page, rebound. Interior clean and bright. New edition, first published in 1802, providing a significant insight into the rise of the industrial revolution in Scotland. Describing many facets of the linen, iron, and fishing industry, Campbell’s observations on manufacturing and economic expansion illustrate the development of a skilled working class, which was a direct result of the industrial boom at the turn of the nineteenth century. He accurately captures the rise of Scotland as a major player in commerce and manufacturing, as well as its daily life and natural scenery in northern Britain. This detailed and factual account provides information on everything from rural life in the Scottish highlands and their natural history to manufacturing, trade, and commercial exploits. Included are the splendid aquatint illustrations all based on the author’s original sketches. Campbell also includes a delightful biographical sketch of Adam Smith, author of the acclaimed Wealth of Nations, detailing his early life in Kirkcaldy and his scholarly pursuits. It is also worth noting that he makes mention of “The Fair Intellectual Club” in Edinburgh, which he describes as a society of female literati who have made great strides in improving the mind (II, p. 327). The women’s movement was on the rise in Scotland in both intellectualism and manufacturing as more and more women were joining both the circles of the intellectuals and the skilled working class. Campbell (1764–1824) was a composer, writer and illustrator. Although he died in abject poverty, He produced an eclectic body of work, much of which was never published.

Description
Stockholm: A. Lagrelius, 1901. FACSIMILE EDITION. Frontispiece portrait, title in black and red, numerous full-page woodcuts. An unsophisticated copy in the original printed wrappers, uncut and unopened. Facsimile of Brahe’s important work describing his astronomical instruments and his observatory at Hven with a preface in Latin by B. Hasselberg. Brahe took up residence on the island of Hven in the Danish Sound in 1576 at the invitation of King Frederick II. There he constructed a residence and observatory, Uraniborg (heavenly castle), a smaller observatory, Stjerneborg (castle of the stars), a windmill, a papermill and workshops; in 1584 a printing press was also installed. The instruments he built at Hven were among the most advanced of the time, greatly benefitting from large-scale construction which space on Hven allowed. In a letter to Caspar Peucer in 1588 Brahe reported that he was planning to write a detailed report on his instruments, the result of which was this work, first published in a privately-printed edition of 40 for presentation in 1598, and the first trade edition in 1602. Hasselberg (1848-1922) was a Swedish astronomer and physicist.

Description
London: Taylor and Hessey, 1823. FIRST EDITION, First State (imprint with single address for publisher). 200 x 125 mm. (8 x 5"). 2 p.l., 341, [1] pp., [3] leaves (ads). VERY PRETTY DARK GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with double frames formed of floral sprigs, drawer handles, and other small tools, raised bands, spine panels densely gilt with stippling, floral tools radiating from small central flower, gilt lettering, turn-ins with floral garlands at corners, olive green watered silk endleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Ashley III, 50; Tinker 1457. Spine darker green than the covers (though not at all noticeable in the four compartments that are almost solidly gilt), front joint a little rubbed and with two-inch thin crack at top, final leaf of ads with repaired curving two-inch tear into text, isolated small stains or faint foxing, but still very attractive--clean and fresh internally, in a very lustrous binding sparkling with gilt. This is a handsomely bound copy of Lamb's largely autobiographical essays that embrace the broad subject of mankind at large, as seen through the author's own experience and impressions. As Oxford Companion says, Lamb's essays "present, with exquisite humor and pathos, and in a brilliant and inimitable style, characters that the author has known . . . , the productions of a playful or melancholy fancy . . . , and general comments and criticism." The name "Elia," as Lamb says, was "clapt down" on these essays in honor of a fellow clerk at South Sea House, a building of commercial offices and the subject of the first essay. A second collection, "The Last Essays of Elia," appeared in 1833. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) worked in the office of the East India Company and wrote poetry, essays, and plays. With his sister Mary, he was the author of "Tales of Shakespeare," a flowing and lucid prose rendition of 20 of the bard's dramas that helped rekindle 19th century interest in the plays. The strikingly attractive binding, done in an elaborately gilt style reminiscent of the Roger Payne era, is the work of Riviere, one of the foremost names among English binderies, partly because the firm did consistently fine work and partly because it was so long in business. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829, then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881, he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership, at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son, and the bindery continued to do business under the Riviere name until 1939, when it was acquired by Bayntun..

A harsh film with frank dialogue and thematic content throughout regarding rape, female sensuality, and sexual brutality. The final version of the film suffered from censorship, as well as an attempt to make something "literary" and "respectable" from a novel where disrespect and ill repute were at the center of a grim story. 8 x 10 inches.
