Description
London: Printed for the Author; And Sold by John and Francis Rivington [et al], 1771. Sixth Edition. 270 x 200 mm. (10 1/2 x 8"). [464] leaves. Early half calf over marbled boards, skillfully rebacked in the 19th century with sheep, raised bands, spine with blind-tooled flowers, gilt lettering, hinges neatly reinforced. With 13 total illustrations, including the engraved frontispiece and 12 folding plates depicting plants and agricultural structures. Spine with faint remnants of labels in top and bottom panels, occasional marginal notations in pencil in a neat 19th century hand. Henrey 1123; ESTC T59414. Light general wear to the binding, but everything sound and agreeable externally. A few spots of no consequence internally with the text generally clean and pleasing, and the plates quite fresh. A pleasing copy. This is an influential work by the author DNB calls "the most distinguished and influential British gardener of the eighteenth century." A contemporary of Linnaeus and Sir Hans Sloane, Philip Miller (1691-1771) was a gardener, horticulturalist, and Fellow of the Royal Society. Following the immense success of his "Gardeners Dictionary" in 1732, Miller released an abridged version three years later. The abridgment proved to be as popular as the original version. Swedish naturalist Pehr Kalm wrote in 1753 that "I have asked several of the greatest and best horticulturists both in England and America, what author and what book they had found and believed to be the best in horticulture. . . . They have all answered with one mouth, [that] Miller’s 'Gardener’s Dictionary,' either in folio, or the abstract in 8vo. [i.e., the abridgment], was the best of all, and that when one has it, no other book is afterwards required." Our sixth edition ("enlarged" from the version discussed by Kalm), was the final edition published during Miller’s lifetime..

Description
New York: The Barbizon Corporation, 1965. First Edition. Wraps. Stapled. Very Good. Scarce catalogue with many pages of actual, or non-photographic, illustration of models in the company's lingerie, sleepwear, day and leisure wear, with 16 pages of full color renderings. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. 75 pp. Also text on rear inside cover, and separate or loose, a printed one page cover letter, an one page order form, and an one sheet, two page price list on glossy light card stock. (Separate sheets were probably meant to be nestled under large flap in front.) The catalogue came out when the days of fashion being promoted solely with non-photographic illustration was not unusual but was starting to lose favor and/or die out. A few businesses such as Lord & Taylor, stuck by such illustrations for a while after, into we believe the early eighties, but even Lord & Taylor was also substituting photos of live models for its trademark illustration style long before. In this catalogue one can see the virtue of pure illustration -- it facilitates conveying the emotional and impressionist element of clothing, the spinning of fantasy, and the like, and also does so without the toxic subtext that photos of live models might incite -- the impossible comparisons a person might make to a real person, etc. We don't know the history of the Barbizon Corporation, when it was founded and its fate. It seems obvious, though, that it was appropriating the name of the storied young women's hotel located on Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street, which had the reputation of housing young single women from monied family, as epitomized by Grace Kelly before she became a movie star. And the look the company was evoking was that associated with the stereotypical Junior Leaguer. In the back of the brochure the company lays out its advertising program. This seems a peculiar thing to have in a retail catalogue. Perhaps this catalogue was something of a pilot publication targeting investors and lenders as much as buyers. Light dusty film on cover. Some leaves have dogeared corners.

Very minor shelfwear, overall a bright and fresh copy
Description
San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 2005. First American edition. Very minor shelfwear, overall a bright and fresh copy. Folio. Profusely illustrated. Original cloth; dust jacket. "Long before their supporting role in Sex and the City, Manolo Blahnik's shoes were legendary—exquisitely detailed, unabashedly luxurious, and impossibly sexy. The epitome of sophistication and taste, they have graced the feet of royalty, supermodels, and movie stars. In these breathtaking pictures by Blahnik's longtime friend, photographer Eric Boman, the shoes take center stage in a dazzling array of intriguing and often lighthearted scenes and settings. A white leather stiletto plays an incriminating role in a suggested crime worthy of Hitchcock. A pale green mule nestles among ferns in homage to Blahnik's recurring botanical themes. The straps of a sandal echo the strands of spaghetti in which it lays entwined. Boman's unerring eye and oddly keen understanding of Blahnik's creations make for spellbinding pictures, full of wit, playfulness, and sole. Elegant allusions to Blahnik's eclectic influences abound—from the cinema to history, from the natural world to art and literature. As covetable as a pair of Manolos, this is a book of consummate creativity, addictive power, and unrivaled individuality: a cult object on a cult designer.
