Richard Wagener (b. 1944) is an American wood engraver who creates gorgeous and detailed landscape scenes as well as abstract engravings. He was been creating wood engravings for over fourty years, with his work being published not only under his own imprint of Mixolydian Editions, but also by Peter Koch, David Pascoe (Nawakum Press), and The Book Club of California. He has won numerous awards and his work is with well over one hundred institutions. This the 48th book of the Barbarian Press, and the fifth of their "Endgrain Editions". "Each of the five books in the 'Endgrain Editions' series approaches the presentation of engravings in a different way to reflect the particular character and aesthetic of each artist", wrote Jan Elsted in the Afterword. Wagener's engravings are presented here chronologically, in order to allow the reader to trace Richard's journey in his work. While Wagener continues to produce additional work, this presents "ninety-five engravings from all periods and styles of [his] career" showcasing his first over thirty years as an artist (n.b., quote from the web site of the Barbarian Press). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter red morocco over patterned paper boards (from engravings by Wagener) with morocco tips, matching morocco spine label with gilt lettering, black endpapers, tipped-in frontispiece (attached at the gutter edge) which, for the deluxe edition, is presented as a separate engraving in a second state, all of the engravings printed from the original blocks; hand-set Joanna type with Hermann Zapf's Optima for display on mouldmade Zerkall-Bütten Book White and Cream, folio size (binding measures 15 3/8" by 10 7/8"), unpaginated, [22] pages of text, followed by the 95 engravings (two folding), [16] text pages [1, blank] [1, colophon].
