Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2015. Hardcover. New. Kentridge, William. 400 copies, numbered and signed by the artist, 176 pages, quarto format, 13-1/2" x 10", printed by letterpress in black and in red, with 67 images bound into the book, hand bound, with a slipcase. 40 copies, 24-3/4" x 19-1/4", four linoleum block prints, cut and printed in Johannesburg, South Africa, signed and numbered, in a cloth-covered portfolio, sold here with the book. Arion Press announces "The Lulu Plays" with esteemed South African artist William Kentridge for September 2015. One of Arion’s most ambitious artist books, this limited edition contains 67 drawings by William Kentridge bound into the book. The text is the original telling of the Lulu story by playwright Frank Wedekind, which inspired the silent cinema classic "Pandora’s Box" and the Alban Berg opera "Lulu". The sixty-seven images are derived from brush and ink drawings for projections for Kentridge’s 2015 production of Alban Berg’s opera Lulu, which was based on the two Wedekind plays from the turn of the century, Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box.  Kentridge drew with brush and ink on dictionary pages. The definitions are in the background but the opening and closing words, in larger type, can be read. Often, after drawing, Kentridge moves the sheets, rearranging elements of the drawings so that they become collages and can resemble moving pictures. The appearance of the drawings on pages of the book is very different from the much larger versions in the opera set, where sometimes only a detail is used and images can be altered by the surfaces on which they are projected, as well as fractured or distorted by the planes and interfering elements of the scenery. Note that this item includes both the book and the suite of linoleum block prints, which are housed separately in a portfolio. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set is extremely large and heavy, and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
BENEDICT ARNOLD (1741-1801). Arnold was the traitorous general who turned on Continental forces during the American Revolution. Contemporary copy. 1pg. May 17, 1775. Ticonderoga, New York. A contemporary copy of an important Revolution-era letter by Benedict Arnold. A week after Arnold and Ethan Allen had captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British, Arnold wrote to Jonathan Brown to appoint him a major in a newly-formed regiment: Sir, Being appointed by the Committee of Safety at Cambridge, to raise a Regiment of Men, and appoint officers for the same, for the purpose of reducing the Fort at Ticonderoga ect. Confiding in your valour, Judgment & Fidelity, I do by the presents, constitute & appoint you major, of the said Regiment, for which purpose this shall be your sufficient Warrant Benedict Arnold Colo. The capture of Fort Ticonderoga occurred early in the American Revolution, before the United States had officially declared independence from Great Britain. The Jonathan Brown in question may have been the same John Brown who officially accused Arnold of treason several years before his duplicity was actually revealed. The paper has evenly toned and the writing is dark.

Description
New Milford, New Jersey, 1914. Softcover. Very Good. Quarto. Measuring 9" x 12". 94pp. Approximately 6000 words written in English with French translations. Handmade brown paper travel journal with "The Log of the Bungaloafers" written on the front wrapper. Some of the pages are detached but present with tiny tears and creasing on the edges, very good with clear intact handwriting. A handmade paper journal detailing the daily events of a group of women traveling together in 1914. The journal is titled, "The Log of the Bungaloafers," a tongue-in-cheek name given to the group of women. The women on the trip are listed as "Dramatic Personae," for the characters they play and are mentioned only by their nicknames throughout the album including Boss, Orphan, Fashion Plate, Always Present in Meals, Perpetual Motions, Household Darling, Queen of Movies, Professor of French, Watchman, and Grumpy. Included with the nicknames are small caricatures of each person. The women are traveling from New York City to New Milford, New Jersey to spend time together around the town and exploring forest trails and lakes in the area. Each day has a description, sometimes translated into French, of what is happening, explaining the weather of the day, and a line or so for each person on how they're feeling or what they are doing: "Robbed the library of a few of its worst choice books." Also included is a handwritten and signed letter from 1895 written by Jane Cunningham Croly, a journalist, women's rights activist, and founder of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in New York City. The letter is in reference to a woman's interest in being a candidate for membership within the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs and Societies. An interesting log of travel and activities from a women's group traveling to New Jersey in 1914.

This work describes the ancient Roman monuments found in Nimes, France, and is backed up with a second section on 'modern' monuments there. Among the structures of interest are the Hopital General, built in 1811, and the Maison Centrale de Detention, dating from ca. 1820. / Charles Oge Barbaroux worked at the royal court of Nimes in the south of France. The frontispiece for this volume includes a vignette of the Pont-du-Gard, the ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD to carry water over 50 km (31 mi) to the Roman colony of Nemausus (modern day Nimes). The text also gives a review of the Roman baths, near Fontaine. The author also describes the 'modern' gendarmerie at the ancient Porte d'Auguste, Nimes, restored in 1828. The Roman amphitheater at Nimes is still extant, here a plan for the structure is represented. Another section describes the Maison Carree which is an ancient Roman temple in Nimes, it is also one of the best-preserved Roman temples to survive in the territory of the former Roman Empire.
