Description
Paris: Éditions Jeanne Walter, 1931. Trace foxing to the top edge of textblock, else a beautiful, close to fine copy. In plain wrappers, enclosed by the distinctive French-fold jacket that boasts the masterful superimposition of smokestacks over stone colonnade; also close to fine. Housed in custom cloth slipcase with a matching lettered chemise. A memorable copy of this consensus high-spot.. First Edition. Quarto. Number 682 of 1000 press-numbered copies. Simultaneously one of the greatest avant-garde photobooks and one of the most insightful Parisian paeans; Parr & Badger remark on the absolute gulf that stands between the dynamism of Moï Ver's Paris—with its complex photomontage techniques and kinetic layout—and the conservative stillness of Atget, whose monograph on the city was published, remarkably, just one year prior. Introduced with text from Fernand Léger. (Roth 70-71; Parr / Badger, v1, 128-129).

An American solar astronomer, Hale (1868-1938) is best known for his discovery of magnetic fields in sunspots, and as the leader and key figure in the planning or construction of several world-leading telescopes. His books treat the possibilities of using larger and larger telescopes, including problems involved in building such instruments; on the radiant drama constantly in progress in the sun’s atmosphere; on how explosions in the sun may alter the magnetic field of the earth, cause auroras, and affect radio transmissions. His intention in publishing the books is to relate the advances made by him and his associates, always within the context of both current and historical research. Parts of these books were previously printed in Scribner’s Magazine and Nature. All are well-illustrated with excellent photographs and diagrams. Hale founded the Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904 under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He initially used the 40-inch Solar Telescope which he brought from the Yerkes Observatory in southern Wisconsin. His main focus was always studies of the sun. Later Hale brought in the 60-inch reflecting telescope, the 100-inch Hooker reflecting telescope and finally the 200-inch reflecting telescope at Palomar Observatory. These were used to understand the physical processes that took place in the Sun and other more distant stars. Also offered here is the publication created for the dedication of the Palomar Observatory on June 3, 1948. The text offers a glimpse into the impressive equipment there, the costs thereof, and the immense possibilities that might be achieved by the newest telescope created for the Observatory.

Description
1954. BUSH, Prescott. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. United States Senate letterhead stationery, 10 1/2 x 8 in., dated May 25, 1954. Addressed to Robert Dudley French, Master of Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University, the letter expresses Bush's personal concern about the ongoing McCarthy-Army hearings and explains his rather limited public response to them. "I would have no hesitancy in answering the questions propounded in your letter... in my opinion, it is in the public interest that members of the Senate withhold comments on the merits of the controversy until they (the hearings) have been concluded. Believe me, my former teacher and old friend, nothing has more seriously disturbed me since I came to the Senate... For the present, the only action which appears open to me is to advocate the adoption of uniform rules which would give the Senate a greater measure of control over investigations than it has had in the past. This I have done..." The body of the letter is twenty-four lines and signed Pres twice at the end; once below a typed closing, and the second time below the hand-written postscript: "Please read my Cheshire speech" To illustrate the advocacy he mentions in his letter, Bush enclosed a press release of a speech he delivered in Cheshire, CT on May 15th and a tear sheet from the Congressional Record of May 24th. The letter and the enclosures are clean and neatly creased twice (for mailing). The Congressional Record is printed on paper of poor quality and is quite browned, with some transfer to the letter and the tear sheet.
