Description
[Paris], [1793]. First Edition. Disbound from a larger volume retaining the plain front wrapper.. Very good.. 4to, 80 pages and 11 engraved folding plates of appliances and buildings. A learned and detailed account of the extraction of potash and various salts written during the frenzied days of the French Revolution. The work is primarily a technological treatise whose effective use did not come into being until 1805 - 1810 (the period of effective English embargo of the continent). There is a note on the title stating that this copy was presented by the American geologist William Maclure. Laid in is a contemporary comment inquiring if the work had been registered with the appropriate government committee. See Partington III for a commentary on the authors.

Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1905 Illustrated with eight plates by A. B. Wenzell. First edition, first printing, American issue, with Scribner's seal to copyright page and no ads at rear. Publisher's red cloth, with front board and spine stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed; lacking scarce original dust jacket. Very good, rubbing to cloth throughout, a touch of wear to spine ends, light expert archival reinforcement to hinges, and faint marginal dampstaining to just a few pages and plates. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. Garrison A12.I.a. House of Mirth, Edith Wharton's second novel, centers around 29-year-old Lily Bart, a beautiful socialite who seeks to marry someone who will provide her with status and wealth. In the conniving world of high society, Lily's own morality proves to be her greatest liability. She becomes caught up in the machinations of various members of her circle, and eventually her reputation is irreparably stained, leading to her tragic downfall. In the spirit of some other Gilded Age masterpieces, the book satirizes and condemns the hypocrisy and immortality of the wealthy class. Author Jennifer Egan writes that The House of Mirth "is a masterpiece that remains electrifying and relevant in the 21st century." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Wenzell, A. B..

Description
(New York): Dell, 1969. Near fine.. First US paperback edition of Baldwin's "criminally underrated" (Weekes) fourth novel about the life of a Black actor. TELL ME is the story of Black actor Leo Proudhammer, his brilliant career shadowed by the condescension, alienation, and physical threats visited on him by a white America that will tolerate him only so far as he entertains, and which exacts heavy penalties for his efforts to live as a free man and artist. The book draws heavily on his own experiences with the Actors Studio during the production of BLUES FOR MISTER CHARLIE, and hides none of its author's bitterness and pain. "TELL ME HOW LONG THE TRAIN'S BEEN GONE is a masterpiece by one of the best living writers in America. Which is not to say, naturally, that it will comfort or cheer you much" (Thompson). 7'' x 4.25''. Original color pictorial wrappers, Dell 8581, cover price $1.25. All edges stained green. Publisher's ads at rear. [12], 370, [2] pages. Light soil to wrappers, some toning to spine.

first edition, 12mo, portraits, 309 pp., original pictorial cloth, ex-library, handstamps on title-page, shelf label on spine, binding somewhat rubbed and shaken, else a good copy. "Mrs. Sarah Meservey was last seen alive in Tenants Harbor, Maine, on December 22, 1877. Her strangely incurious neighbors did not look behind her blinds for five weeks; then her strangled body was finally found. Hart, a neighbor, was convicted, mainly because he talked too much before the body was found of how he dreamed she was strangled. Only a small piece this book is devoted to the trial; the remainder is the author's theory…" – McDade, Annals of Murder, 447
