Description
Portland, Maine: G.W. Morris, Publishers, 124 Franklin Street, 1910. Wraps. Very good. [VIEWBOOK] [NEW HAMPSHIRE] [TRAVEL] [SOUVENIR]. Wrapper title: Illustrated Memories of Portsmouth, York, York Harbor, York Beach, Kittery, Isle of Shoals, New Castle & Rye. 12mo oblong (7 ¼" x 10 ¾"); [51]pp; stiff cream textured wrapper, lettering in red and black on front with a line-drawing vignette of people fishing from a canoe; 46 b&w photographic half-tone illustrations; [5]pp text precedes the illustrations; wear to wrapper with chipping at spine and small closed tears to edges, clean and tight interior; very good. OCLC locates 9 copies. An introductory text about the area of Southern Maine and the sea coast of New Hampshire is followed by large photographic illustrations with titles. With dirt streets and a horse and buggy in one of the photos, the viewbook appears to be from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. In a beach scene, women are bathing in dresses to their knees with dark stockings. The photos are of historic homes, churches, and the scenic coast. Fort McClary in Kittery, Old Fort Constitution of New Castle Island, and several lighthouses including the Portsmouth Harbor Light in New Hampshire, and the Nubble Light and the Boon Island Light in Maine are pictured. Interesting large hotels and resorts are featured. Several historic churches including the interiors are shown, with a special photo of the hanging greens at Christmas in St. John's Church in Portsmouth. The Old Gosport Church on Star Island, Isle of Shoals is shown. There are several photos of the writer and poet, Celia Thaxter's cottage and its interior on Appledore Island, in York County, Maine. And a curious photograph of the rocks on York Beach is imagined as the "Profile of George Washington.".
