Description
[Various Places]: [No Publisher], 1971. Very Good+. Collection of documents from Roots author Alex Haley's estate, including three items signed or annotated by Malcolm X and three items signed or annotated by Haley. Haley ghostwrote the legendary Black Power activist's autobiography, The Autobiography of Malcolm X. All items are housed in a custom black leather tray case, lightly worn, with "X" pierced out on the front board. The case was commissioned by the individual who purchased the below items at Haley's 1992 estate sale: Manuscript sheet music for In Memoriam, inspired by The Autobiography of Malcolm X and composed by Willamette University Dean Charles Bestor between 1968 and 1971. First performed in 1971 at a concert attended by Alex Haley. Signed by Bestor on the title page and inscribed to Haley "with deepest respect." [ii], 56 pp. Folio, plastic comb binding, unsophisticated gray card wraps hand-lettered in marker. Very Good with musty odor, light wear and moderate soiling to wraps, rippling from water exposure to front wrap and first half of book, and heavy edge toning throughout. Western Union telegram from Malcolm X to Alex Haley, signed M Sahabazz [sic]: "Will probably be here in Miami until after Tuesday and back in New York by Wednesday / Sorry for the delay / My phone number here is NE 36011 Room 115=." February 20, 1963. Near Fine. Seven mimeographed typewritten documents authored by Malcolm X and prong bound into a manila folder; legal-sized sheets are folded to fit. Auctioneer's label to folder and slight rusting to prong; contents Very Good with musty odor and light to moderate waterstaining to each sheet. - Single-page text of a telegram to President Kennedy protesting the 1963 arrest of "a Muslim minister and 12 other innocent Negroes." February 16, 1963. - 12 pp. essay "Racism: The Cancer that is Destroying America, " written for the Egyptian Gazette. August 25, 1964. Manuscript note in Alex Haley's hand: "Take problem to United Nations." - 11 pp. press statement "The 2nd African Summit Conference." August 22, 1964. - Single-page copy of a message sent to the Organization of African Unity, plus cover sheet. July 28, 1964 - 3 pp. speech made to the Young Men's Muslim Association, plus cover sheet. July 27, 1964. - 8 pp. speech addressed to the Organization of African Unity. July 17, 1964. Manuscript note in Malcolm X's hand to final page verso: "Here is a copy of the memorandum so you won't have to call [illegible] Theresa for it after all as I suggested in my letter." - Single-page press statement addressing the split with Elijah Muhammad. March 8, 1964. 28 items, chiefly correspondence between Alex Haley and his editors at Doubleday & Co relating to The Autobiography of Malcolm X and his 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family, prong bound into a manila folder. Auctioneer's label to folder and slight rusting to prong; contents Near Fine with minimal wear. - 18 signed letters to Haley from William Ewald, Ken McCormick, Lisa Drew, and Wolcott Gibbs, Jr. One letter, regarding payments due to the two authors, was shared with Malcolm X. His signed manuscript note at the bottom of the page states: "I have no objections to the terms you have made with Mr. Haley as mentioned above; as long as you remember that the other half goes not to me, but to Muhommad's Mosque. Malcolm X." - 5 photocopies of letters between Haley, Gibbs, Paul R. Reynolds, and James P. Dwyer discussing the legal implications of some passages from The Autobiography of Malcolm X. - 2 carbon copies of letters between Haley, Ewald, and Gibbs. - 2 carbon copies of contracts, one signed by Haley and McCormick and one signed by Haley and Malcolm X (publisher's signature line unfilled). - Carbon copy of text for the dust jacket for The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The correspondence provides a fascinating look into the creation of one of the most famous memoirs in literary history, published just months after its author's shocking assassination. The interviews got off to a rocky start, and even after the two men established a rapport, the collaborative process dragged on for more than two years — long enough that at one point Haley ran out of funds and couldn't pay his phone bill. The overworked Malcolm X met with Haley less frequently than his ghostwriter desired, and often spent some of their time together making calls and receiving visitors. In one letter dated January 29, 1964, Gibbs at Doubleday warns: "Please bear in mind that the more rewriting you do, the further we are away from having a finished book, since Doubleday can't cope with material as fast as you can produce it." In another letter, he requests that Haley watch out for too much slang: "this should really be a book of national importance, and it's surprising how few people really are up on slang." This was difficult, since Haley was determined to preserve the style of Malcolm X, "the demagogue, sometimes ragged at the edges, sometimes quasi-dulcet, sometimes pounding, without obvious intrusion by the 'as told to' writer." Also significant is a 1969 letter from Haley to a somewhat impatient Ewald regarding his latest project, Roots. "It is going to be a very major book, no question about it. I do not mean this in a vain way, I mean it in the sense of knowing, clinically, the power of its material that is now in the writing." The book would not be completed for years, but when published it took America by storm. The novel topped The New York Times bestseller list for five months, won a Pulitzer, and was quickly adapted into a critically acclaimed and culturally influential miniseries.

Description
Pittsburgh: Cramer, Spear and Eichbaum, 1814. Original linen-backed blue-paper boards, quite worn, original spine label; interior with some minor staining and foxing. Overall a wonderful copy. First edition. Brackenridge (1786–1871) was an American writer, lawyer, judge, and politician. He traveled extensively in both North and South America due to his various roles in the U.S. government, often serving as a diplomat. The first section of his travel account consists of a description of the newly acquired territory of Louisiana. Brackenridge details the history of the territory, including the Native Americans indigenous to the area, as well as the natural history and resources there. His expertise on the region earned him the position of district attorney in the Orleans territory. The second section is a journal of his expedition with fur trader Manuel Lisa up the Missouri River in 1811. He describes the fur trade as well as the founding of the Missouri Fur Company. Overall, Brackenridge’s text was one of the earliest descriptions of the area after the Louisiana Purchase and provides insight as to the early years of western settlement. Clark II, 136; Howes, B688; Raines, p. 30; Sabin 7177; Streeter, 1776; Wagner-Camp, 12-:1.

Description
1797. London: R. Noble, 1797. Large 4to, pp. 89/90, with a full-page engraving by Blake surrounding the letterpress text. A loose sheet, fore-edges untrimmed (some still with deckle), minimal trimming to top and bottom edges. Only five leaves in the book have engravings recto and verso. ß First edition, perfect for display or for teaching as the leaves are quite sturdy and can be carefully handled or matted for framing. Blake, virtually in a frenzy, completed 537 watercolor designs when he was commissioned to illustrate Young s masterpiece. The publisher only issued the first four Nights and had Blake engrave (and partially etch) 43 plates to test the market. The response must have been poor since no further engravings were requested of Blake. Ironically, today the poet Young, once compared with Shakespeare and Milton, is forgotten save for this edition. Bentley, Blake Books, 515. Essick and LaBelle, Night Thoughts, Dover, 1975. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, 1790-1914, 3.

Description
1937 Original 9" x 7" Type 1 black and white photo. Photo of the 1937 New York Giants team after winning the pennant, featuring future Hall of Famers Carl Hubbell and Mel Ott. Near fine photo, with just some light toning and rippling, and brown lettering to upper margin. Overall, a great vintage team photo. The 1937 New York Giants won the National League pennant, though they went on to lose in the World Series against their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, in five games. Carl Hubbell was a Hall of Fame pitcher who spent his entire career with the Giants. He won NL MVP honors twice (1933, 1936) and was selected for nine All-Star games. His most memorable moment in the league came when he struck out five all-time great hitters - Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin - in a row in the 1934 All-Star Game. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Mel Ott was a Hall of Fame right fielder who spent his entire playing career with the New York Giants (1926 - 1947). He was selected to 12 All-Stars games and was a 6x NL home run leader. Notably, he led the Giants in home run hitting for 18 consecutive seasons (1928 - 1945), which still stands as a record today, and was the third player to join the 500 home run club after Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx. Ott was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1951. Other notable players featured in the photo are 4x All-Star Wally Berger, 6x All-Star Jo-Jo Moore, and 3x All-Star Hank Leiber. . Photograph.

Various. No binding. Near Fine. Np: Various, 1954-1985. Set of 5 vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white glossy photos. One with ink stamp and one with attached paper blurb. Overall near fine. Zoila Emperatriz Chavarri Castillo (1922–2008), known as Yma Sumac ("Ima sumaq" means "how beautiful" in Quechua), was a Peruvian-born vocalist, actress, model, musical composer and producer. She won a Guinness World Record for the Greatest Range of Musical Value in 1956. Her debut album, Voice of Xtabay (1950), peaked at number one in the Billboard 200, selling a million copies in the United States; she became an international success in the 1950s. Albums like Legend of the Sun Virgin (1952), Fuego del Ande (1959) and Mambo! (1955), were other successes. In 1951, Sumac became the first Latin American and Peruvian female singer to debut on Broadway. In "Chuncho (The Forest Creatures)" (1953), she developed her own technical singing, named "double voice" or "triple coloratura". During the same period, she performed in Carnegie Hall. In 1960 she became the first Latin American woman to get a phonograph record star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Afterwards she toured the Soviet Union, selling more than 20 million tickets. According to Variety in 1974, Sumac had more than 3,000 concerts "covering the entire globe", breaking any previous records by a performer. Fashion magazine V listed her as one of the 9 international fashion icons of all time in 2010. She sold over 40 million records, making her the best-selling Peruvian singer in history. (Wikipedia) A few moments from Yma Sumac's illustrious career are presented in the selection. They include two photos from the 1954 film SECRET OF THE INCAS and one from the 1957 Paramount release OMAR KHAYYAM. There is also a portrait of her wearing her most famous costume, a magnificent jacket constructed of hand-beaded panels, designed by Yma. There is also a candid of her attending the Thalian Ball in 1985.

Description
1969. [Student Activism][Black Panthers] El Gaucho, the University of California, Santa Barbara student newspaper, a record of California student activist reporting in the weeks after the October 15, 1969 Vietnam Moratorium, from the arrest of Michel Barton and Mick Kronman to Black Students Union demands for the removal of Black Studies chairman Setahrd Fisher and Angela Davis's November 4 appearance on campus. Across five late-October and early-November 1969 issues, the paper prints front-page headlines including "Two arrested for moratorium action," "Blacks demand firing of Black Studies Dept. head," "BSU denounces Cheadle and breaks communication with administration," and "Angela Davis speaks to UCSB community today," placing UCSB within the wider California New Left fights over antiwar protest, Black student power, ethnic appropriations, police action, and the political authority of the university itself. Noon rallies, Legislative Council votes, faculty statements, guest editorials, and letters to the editor give the archive the texture of organizing in progress rather than retrospective summary. El Gaucho. Vol. 50, nos. 24, 26, 27, 28, and 30. Santa Barbara, California: University of California, Santa Barbara, October 27 to November 4, 1969. Archive of 5 issues with coverage centered on antiwar mobilization, Black Studies conflict, student government appropriations, ecological politics, and campus debate over public speech and university governance. [1] Wilson, Becca, ed. El Gaucho. Santa Barbara, California: University of California, Santa Barbara, October 27, 1969. Vol. 50, no. 24. Front page coverage centers on the arrests of Michel Barton and Mick Kronman in the aftermath of the Vietnam Moratorium under the headline "Two arrested for moratorium action," paired with an interview feature, "Busted students - what they think," and an editorial asking "Why cancel classes for Shriver, not for moratorium?" Interior commentary extends the issue's activist frame through debate over class cancellation, political speech, and the university's treatment of protest. [2] Wilson, Becca, ed. El Gaucho. Santa Barbara, California: University of California, Santa Barbara, October 29, 1969. Vol. 50, no. 26. This issue shifts from the Moratorium's immediate aftermath to student institutional strategy, with "Leg Council tackles ethnic appropriations," "Santa Barbara's law system under scrutiny by JAR," and "Two day moratorium planned." The paired attention to Associated Students funding, Judicial Administration Review, and plans for the November 13-15 Moratorium shows student activism moving through both protest and campus governance. [3] Wilson, Becca, ed. El Gaucho. Santa Barbara, California: University of California, Santa Barbara, October 30, 1969. Vol. 50, no. 27. The strongest issue in the group for Black student organizing at UCSB, opening with "Blacks demand firing of Black Studies Dept. head," "BSU's Bob Mason says Fisher is not acceptable," and "Fisher answers BSU charges." Its interior editorial, "Dr. Fisher, your people have spoken," makes clear that the fight concerned who would control Black Studies, whether black students would be recognized as legitimate participants in departmental decision-making, and how Chancellor Vernon Cheadle's administration was handling that demand. [4] Wilson, Becca, ed. El Gaucho. Santa Barbara, California: University of California, Santa Barbara, October 31, 1969. Vol. 50, no. 28. Student government and Black student protest converge here in "Leg Council appropriates money to ethnic groups, JAR" and "BSU denounces Cheadle and breaks communication with administration," with additional coverage of a campaign to lower the voting age. The issue preserves the language of the break itself, including Robert Mason's charge that the administration had failed to admit black students' right to make decisions about black studies concerns. [5] Wilson, Becca, ed. El Gaucho. Santa Barbara, California: University of California, Santa Barbara, November 4, 1969. Vol. 50, no. 30. Angela Davis's scheduled UCSB appearance anchors the issue under the headline "Angela Davis speaks to UCSB community today," followed by "Trusteeship condemned," a "BLACK FACULTY STATEMENT," and a full "Guest editorial from the Black Students Union." Davis's presence links the local Fisher dispute to the statewide University of California crisis surrounding her UCLA appointment, Communist Party affiliation, and the Regents' intervention, giving this final issue particular force within California New Left and Black campus politics. California was an especially concentrated area for New Left student activism advocating for antiwar organizing, Black student control over Black Studies, voting reform, environmental concerns, and statewide conflict over the governance of the University of California. Because El Gaucho was printing these disputes as they unfolded, the archive preserves not only headline events but the campus organ through which student activists shared information on government appropriations, committee hearings, rally announcements, faculty interventions, legal-defense language, and guest editorials. Newsprint toned with expected wear, including horizontal folds, edge chipping, short tears, creasing, and some small marginal losses; text and headlines remain clear. Overall very good condition. A UCSB student newspaper run from the week in which California student activism moved across the printed page from Moratorium arrests to Black Studies struggle to Angela Davis.

Description
Leominster, Massachusetts: The Eusey Press, Inc, 1921. Facsimile. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 1980s facsimile of 1921 original. Rear endpaper lightly soiled, small dealer bookplate on rear endpaper corner. Binding tight and square, text clean, bright, and unmarked. 587 pp. No images, making it an oddity in the series (other volumes include numerous photographs). The first volume of the series composed entirely after the death of the register's original author Joseph Battell (he passed away shortly before the publication of volume three). The Morgan horse is one of the earliest horse breeds developed in the United States. Tracing back to the foundation sire Figure, later named Justin Morgan after his best-known owner, Morgans served many roles in 19th-century American history, being used as coach horses and for harness racing, as general riding animals, and as cavalry horses during the American Civil War on both sides of the conflict. Morgans have influenced other major American breeds, including the American Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walking Horse and the Standardbred. During the 19th and 20th centuries, they were exported to other countries, including England, where a Morgan stallion influenced the breeding of the Hackney horse. In 1907, the US Department of Agriculture established the US Morgan Horse Farm near Middlebury, Vermont for the purpose of perpetuating and improving the Morgan breed; the farm was later transferred to the University of Vermont. The first breed registry was established in 1909, and since then many organizations in the US, Europe and Oceania have developed. Popular children's authors, including Marguerite Henry and Ellen Feld, have portrayed the breed in their books; Henry's Justin Morgan Had a Horse was later made into a Disney movie.
