Description
London: Thomas M'Lean, 1823. A Very Scarce Alken With Forty-Two Hand-Colored Plates The Schwerdt - Duke of Gloucester Copy ALKEN, Henry. Scraps From the Sketch-Book of Henry Alken. Engraved by Himself. Containing Forty-Two Plates. London: Thomas M'Lean, 1823. First edition with the plates all dated 1820. Oblong folio (9 9/16 x 13 5/8 inches; 243 x 347 mm.). Title leaf (verso blank), and forty-two hand-colored engraved plates heightened with gum arabic, twelve with multiple images. Plates watermarked "J. Whatman 1822 & 1824". Bound ca. 1900 by Morrell of London (stamp-signed) in half maroon straight-grain morocco over plum cloth ruled in gilt. Front cover with rectangular maroon morocco label, bordered and lettered in gilt, spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. The Schwerdt copy, with his bookplate and that of Prince Henry, first Duke of Gloucester on the front pastedown and the free endpaper. A bright, clean, and superb copy of an extremely scarce album by Henry Alken. According to Schwerdt there was an uncolored edition of 1821. While Siltzer notes an Alken Sketch Book of 1820 (34 plates), and the Scraps... edition of 1822 (assumedly mistaken for 1823). It is not in found in Tooley or Abbey in any edition. The "Scraps" include equestrian, hunting, dog, bowling scenes, etc. In short, each print features a sporting tableau. Of Alken, Siltzer wrote, "It took but a short time for the leading art publishers of London to recognize his genius and to discover that they had 'struck a reef' of both artistic and financial value, and the well-known firms of Thomas M'Lean, S. and J. Fuller, and Rudolph Ackermann were not slow to reaping full benefit... It appears that Alken himself occasionally engraved plates, and thus added to the facility of production..." C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (1862-1939) was the esteemed collector whose collection of sporting books up to WWII was considered the finest ever amassed. The catalog to his collection, Hunting, Hawking Shooting, is a standard reference. Prince Henry, first duke of Gloucester (1900-1974) was a soldier and member of the British Royal Family, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. Schwerdt I, p. 21. Cf. Siltzer, p. 71.

NOTE: This edition of Science and Civilisation in China (without acknowledgment in English of the publisher) is a scarce reprint of the original Cambridge University Press edition, with only several copies listed in OCLC. However, each volume includes the following translation from the Chinese printed on the verso of a front or back flyleaf of each volume: "Publisher: Jhuo Liu Ging Di, Newmoon Book Co., Ltd., 133 Dhongqing South Road, Section 1, Taipei City, Taiwan; Printed by Da Yuan Printing, No. 5, 42nd Lane, Dali Street, Taipei City, Taiwan; The Republic of China." NOEL JOSEPH TERENCE MONTGOMERY NEEDHAM (1900 - 1995), also known as Li Yuese; was a British scientist, historian and sinologist known for his groundbreaking research in biochemistry and embryology, and his herculean multivolume history of Chinese science and technology. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1941, and as a fellow of the British Academy in 1971. In 1992, the Queen conferred on him the Companionship of Honour and the Royal Society noted he was the only living person to hold these three titles. Although his career as biochemist and an academic was well established, his career developed in unanticipated directions during and after World War II. Three Chinese scientists came to work with Needham in 1937: Lu Gwei-djen, Wang Ying-lai, and Chen Shi-zhang. Lu (1904-91), daughter of a Nanjingese pharmacist, taught Needham Chinese, igniting his interest in China's ancient technological and scientific past. Under the Royal Society's direction, Needham was the director of the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office in Chongqing from 1942 to 1946. During this time he made several long journeys through war-torn China and many smaller ones, visiting scientific and educational establishments and obtaining for them much needed supplies. In 1944 he visited Yunnan in an attempt to reach the Burmese border. Everywhere he went he purchased and was given old historical and scientific books which he shipped back to England through diplomatic channels and were to form the foundation of his later research. He got to know Zhou Enlai and met numerous Chinese scholars, including the painter Wu Zuoren, and the meteorologist Zhu Kezhen who later sent crates of books to him in Cambridge, including the 2,000 volumes of the Gujin Tushu Jicheng encyclopedia, a comprehensive record of China's past. On his return to the west he was asked by Julian Huxley to become the first head of the Natural Sciences Section of UNESCO in Paris, France. It was Needham who insisted that science should be included in the organisation's mandate at an earlier planning meeting. After two years in which the suspicions of the Americans over scientific cooperation with communists intensified, Needham resigned in 1948 and returned to Gonville and Caius College, where he resumed his fellowship and his rooms, which were soon filled with his books. He devoted his energy to the history of Chinese science until his retirement in 1990, even though he continued to teach some biochemistry until 1966. SCIENCE AND CIVILISATION IN CHINA (1954-2008), a series of books initiated and edited by British biochemist and sinologist Joseph Needham, deal with the history of science and technology in China. To date there have been seven volumes in twenty-seven books. The series was on the Modern Library Board's 100 Best Nonfiction books of the 20th century. One reviewer of the first volume in 1954 declared the project "perhaps the greatest single act of historical synthesis and intercultural communication ever attempted by one man." In 1954, Needham-along with an international team of collaborators-initiated the project to study the science, technology, and civilization of ancient China. This project produced a series of volumes published by Cambridge University Press. The project is still continuing under the guidance of the Publications Board of the Needham Research Institute (NRI), chaired by Christopher Cullen. The unauthorized edition of the first 4 books (in 5 volumes) offered here was surprisingly published in Taiwan, where a Chinese translation of the books was also published (Pingyi Chu, 2020 'Needham in Taiwan: Translating Science and Civilisation in China as Politics of Modernity and Identity," East Asian Science, Technology and Society: 14:2, 379-392). Despite historic friction between communist mainland China and democratic Taiwan, Needham was pleased with the translation, and developed a close association with scholars in both camps, including Franklin Woo. The relevance of Needham's magnum opus to the current rise to prominence of Chinese science was highlighted in a special issue of Nature, titled "Science in China" (23 June, 2016--also offered here), PROVENANCE: FRANKLIN J. WOO was chaplain and lecturer in religion at Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong (1965-1976) and director of the China Program of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (1976-1993). Woo published a review of Simon Winchester's biography of Joseph Needham (China Review International, Vol. 15, issue 4, pp 588-593, 2008) in which he states, "personally, I can well recall a public meeting in Hong Kong in the late 1960s where Needham reported on the People's Republic of China. ... Needham's long view of the history of science gives rightful recognition to all the antecedents of modern science as we know it today, while avoiding the natural tendency of making the latter the yeardsick by which to measure the former." THE BISHOP'S HOUSE (presumably Woo's home at the time), located at 1 Lower Albert Road, Central, is the residence and office of the Archbishop of Hong Kong. It was originally designed as a school for Chinese students and for many years housed St Paul's College. The house's origins can be dated from 1843, when Vincent Stanton was appointed Colonial Chaplain of Hong Kong. The building was completed in 1848. When the new Diocese of Victoria was created, Stanton handed over the college property to the newly appointed Bishop, George Smith.

1845. HAY, D. R. [David Ramsay]. The Principles of Beauty in Colouring Systematized. iv, 72, 8 pp. of advertisements, including 14 color plates of colour samples, with a total of 86 paint samples. 8vo, 201 x 140 mm., cloth, professionally rebound and rebacked into original boards, with piece of the original spine laid in. Text is bound to the front board, the plates to that back, so one can view the plates and read the text at the same time. Edinburgh, London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1845. An unusual work on colour theory by David Ramsay Hay (1798-1866), author of numerous works on the subject and a decorator to Queen Victoria. Hay offers an analysis of the nature of color, the principles governing contrast, and a newly developed system of chromatic harmony. The latter is demonstrated with a series of 14 examples, 13 of which consist of six different coloured samples arranged in a hexagonal pattern. The result is a strikingly modern design. Birren Collection 305. The Book of Colour Concepts 320.

Description
[Dau Tieng]: n.p., 1970. Very good.. Striking collection of photographs showing many carefree, recreational moments of wartime: soldiers sitting around at the barracks, reading and smoking; and many photos of Vietnamese acquaintances across the album, such as women lounging at the base library. Notably, includes two photographs of a Vietnamese all-woman rock band performing, and three of an African-American soldier rock band (likely USO). Plus several exterior shots of the military base, one sign noting the headquarters of the 2/28 Infantry (the Black Lions). A moving portrait, particularly of what appear to be (at least momentarily) jovial relationships between soldiers and local Vietnamese. 12mo. Commercial album; turquoise faux-leather boards. 46 gelatin-silver B&W prints, most 4.5" by 3.5"; 13 color prints; 3 pieces of various ephemera (including an Army library card dated 1970); plus 4 photos apparently sent from home. Very good. Mild exterior wear; light soil to plastic sleeves throughout; but photos remain clean and bright.

With full-color printed illustration of a woman medical technician, in uniform, carrying a tray of medical instruments. Also with two medals, printed in bronze, bearing the emblems of the U.S. Army Medical Corps. The Women's Army Corps evolved from the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, a civilian organization of women working with the United States Army, when Congress granted military status to its members in 1943. Forty percent of WAC members were assigned to positions as weather observers, radio and control tower operators, and aerial photograph analysts. Many other women worked as cryptographers, medical technicians, and mechanics. As the war entered its last two years, and as the WAC fought for further inclusion in the ranks of the Army, more women were enlisted in roles previously reserved for men (Yellin, Our Mothers' War, pp. 114-116).

Lynn, Massachusetts: Lydia E. Pinkham Medicine Company, [n.d., ca. 1920s] A collection of testimonials from Pinkham's customers, mixed with instructions for various children's games. A brief introduction informs readers, "We are better equipped to play the Game of Life when we are physically fit. Ill-health is always a handicap. For over fifty years Lydia E. Pinkham's medicines have been helping thousands of people to get well and to keep well." Games include "Fruit Game," "Call Ball," and "Sea Urchin Tag." . Color pictorial wrappers. . Small, thin . Light wear and soiling. Light chipping / tearing to wrappers. Bottom free corner front wrapper gone. Paper is toned but very clean and readable. Lydia Estes Pinkham (1819 – 1883) was an inventor and patent medicine distributor made famous by creating and selling Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, one of the most popular patent medicines of the late nineteenth century. The remedy utilized five herbal ingredients traditionally used to treat menstrual issues, plus alcohol. She managed a large business to distribute the compound along with other remedies and publications like Lydia E. Pinkham's Private Text Book, a sexual health manual for women. The tonic was so popular that it was eventually memorialized in a drinking song known as "The Ballad of Lydia Pinkham" and, later, "Lily the Pink." Pinkham was also a lifelong supporter of abolition and women's rights. She had grown up in a family of abolitionists in Lynn, Massachusetts who counted Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison among their friends.

Praze (Prague): Albatros, nakladatelstvi pro děti a mládež (a Children's and YOung People Publisher), 1990. [TOY BOOK] [ACTIVITY BOOK] [JUVENILE]. Folio (13" x 9 ½"); [8] leaves; color pictorial front wrapper showing the completed paper crèche, 2 crèche pieces printed on the rear wrapper; assembly directions printed on the verso front wrapper; 8 leaves printed with numbered and lettered shapes to be cut-out, a diagram of the completed scene is on the first leaf; fine. OCLC locates one copy at the Herder Institute in Germany. A later copy is located at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. An unused booklet of color-printed figures to cut-out and stand up to form a crèche in the style found in the early 19th century Czech town of Příbram. The scene features a walled city on a hill with an angel soaring over the church dome. On the first level, a cave houses the Holy Family, and villagers head toward the manager with gifts. Sheep and goats graze on the hill and in front of the manger. Thirty-three numbered figures with self-stands to fold over are ready to be cut-out and placed around the village. First published in 1970, this is a reprint from 1990 by the same Prague publishing house, Albatros. Albatros was founded in 1949 and continues to be a publisher of children's and young adult books. The artist, Jan Čaka (1929-2018), was born in Prague but his family was from the town of Příbram in the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. Čaka worked for a uranium mining company in Příbram as a cartographer, but was involved in Scouting and was a lover of the Czech countryside and nature. He wrote several books but they were prevented from being published and were destroyed by the Communists. His interesting life can be explored on the English portion of the Czech website: poznejpribram dot cz/en.

Description
Lawrence, Massachusetts: The Boothby Press, 1928. Octavo (23 x 16 cm.), 164 pages. Cover title: City Mission Cook Book. Publication date derived from image in Walter Baker advertisement on page [107]. Includes table of contents. Advertisements interspersed. Second printing (see Brown). A generous anthology of seven hundred recipes assembled by delegate members of a community defining itself on a wide franchise. An idea of the scope can be inferred from the number–forty-eight–of recipes for pudding of one sort or another, a number, moreover, that does not include cobblers, shortcakes, or pandowdies. Several melted cheese dishes are not seen every day (Gnorchi; Montaug; Mexican Bunny), and there is sometimes an experimental impulse: Pineapple and Shrimp Salad; Fig Mousse (with sherry); Spiced Rhubarb (with vinegar and cloves). To restore calm, there is advice on mixing an Elderberry Flower Cordial. The Lawrence City Mission, originally called the Lawrence Provident Association, was created in 1859. "We are confirmed in the opinion so freely expressed at our last meeting," read the plan of organization, "that the establishment of a city mission, free from sectarian bias, for the purpose of friendly counsel, encouragement, and material aid to the poor and friendless, is a measure that promises results of a most beneficial character." Once established, with twenty-six delegates from twelve churches under the leadership of Rev. George Packard (1803-1876, originally of Wiscasset, Maine), the Mission acted as a clearinghouse for charitable initiatives of various kinds. An unusually successful civic cooperative, it also provided disaster relief and assistance to victims of tuberculosis. Reorganized, the organization continues under the name Family Services of Merrimack Valley. Several pages lightly stained or darkened; also some markings or corrections in pencil (one in ink). Bound in blue textured publisher's cloth with dark blue lettering, upper slightly soiled, lower discolored, both cracked at the hinge; back and forecorners worn. One recipe handwritten on title page verso. Near very good. [OCLC locates five copies].
